Dennis Oury - New Jersey's Karl Rove

by: Thurman Hart

Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 09:03:01 AM EDT

We are getting a view of the soft underbelly of the Bergen County Democratic Organization, thanks to The Record's Michael Gartland:
When asked if any borough official or employee discussed taking steps to "hurt, harm, damage or inflict any type of suffering" on former Sgt. John Ward, Shore responded, "Yes."

"Tell me what you heard," Ward's lawyer, Andrew Samson, said to Shore.

"I can't," he said.

"Why not?"

"It was in closed session. There was - it was the borough attorney talking to the council," Shore responded.

That's borough clerk Ian Shore with the pretty singing voice.

I'm not a lawyer, but if the borough council plotted to break laws during closed session, then legal privilege is mooted.  And the whole lot can be subject to RICO charges.

There's more below the fold. Click on through.

During his deposition, Shore described two instances of being approached by Democrats to sell fund-raiser tickets. He testified that he decided to sell tickets for former Councilman Michael DeMarse because he wanted to keep his job.

"I thought it would take some of the pressure off me," he said. "He used to bust my chops, like he wanted me out of here."

The sticky part will be connecting how Shore "felt" with any actions on DeMarse's part.  I can feel like you are mad at me even if you are really mad at your kid for busting the window yesterday.

Here's an interesting tidbit:

Mitchell Jacobs, an attorney with the Scarinci Hollenbeck law firm in Lyndhurst, helped represent the borough during Shore's deposition and objected to questions seeking information on what was discussed in the closed session. According to the transcript, Jacobs cited attorney-client privilege.

Now, Scarinci Hollenbeck is the law firm where BCDO Boss Joe works.  Anyone else see a conflict of interest here?  Oury is Ferriero's former business-partner in a government grants-writing consultancy.  You know, the one that is keeping half of the FBI up late writing out subpoenas for more documents from just about every burg in Bergen.  Of course, if such things were recognized as conflicts in Bergen County; then we wouldn't be where we are, would we?

Until we get tougher laws passed in NJ, RICO is really the only weapon at law enforcement's disposal to root out the organized ongoing criminal conspiracies that comprise most of what passes for governance in NJ.

This crap is par for the course, not some rare exception to the rules.

At this point, there's no way Christie is going to really start doing his job...and clearly Ann Milgram has no interest in busting these bums in any systemic way.

The only hope on the horizon in terms of laws being enforced, as I see it, is if Barack Obama wins and appoint a REAL crime busting AG and federal prosecutors for this region who will take off the kid gloves and start using the RICO statutes to the max.

Another way to clean up NJ is for the people to simply vote all the indecent/dishonest bastards out of office and replace them with decent honest people committed to run the state in a decent honest manner.   Sadly, in NJ, that is considered a radical/revolutionary proposal.

Ideally, both of the above will come to pass.

almost every time you hear about Chris Christie doing something, Milgram's office is involved.  Christie just doesn't share the credit.

Milgram May Need A Better PR Operation... (0.00 / 0)
.....why should Christie "share credit" with a Democrat?  (surely not just because it would be a nice thing to do?  lol)

Here's the official summary of Milgram's experience...

http://www.nj.gov/oag/oag/oag_...

It turns out that she just received he law degree in 1996!!!

Most of her experience is in matters not related to white collar crime and/or political corruption.

She's clearly a brilliant young (38) woman; but simply being Farber's assistant should't mean she inherits the job.

If Jon Corzine was serious about really cleaning up the state he could have found a motivated fearless seasoned crimebuster who would have relished the opportunity to go after the state's machines.

Milgram is either in way over her head, or in some way, compromised.

I suspect many of us know of all manner of information that has been passed along to Christie and/or Milgram that has never been pursued.

When you look at the resources and experience of a firm like Scarinci and you look at Milgram's CV the mismatch is painfully obvious.

Corzine has left NJ virtually defenseless against the machine.

Thurman, you're not a lawyer; but I bet that if you had been the NJ AG for the last four years that you would have done a far better job that the folks who've held that job.  Why?  Because you would have been AGGRESSIVE about finding the crooks, prosecuting them and jailing them....and you would have surrounded yourself with like minded professionals to get the job done.

I sense no, zero, zip nada sense of outrage from anyone in NJ governance over the issue of corruption (with the exception of Loretta Weinberg & Co...and even she's pretty mild mannered about it).

No doubt there must be a few really good folks out there who are ready to radically reform/clean up the system; if anyone here knows who they are please share!!!

1996 (0.00 / 0)
was twelve years ago - that's plenty of time to be seasoned.  It's seven years longer than I've had my Poli Sci degree.

As far as a PR plan goes, she is much more typical of what AGs are supposed to be - focused on the law rather than the microphone.  She isn't running for governor next year, Christie is.

Also, keep in mind that the majority of investigations done by Christie's office are actually carried out by the FBI and/or the IRS and/or BATF.  He's got a lot more to throw at the problem than Milgram.

I saw that too. (0.00 / 0)
The reference to Scarinici SHOULD have mentioned that that is Ferriero's law firm.

That probably explains why the photo in today's record of a sunburned Joe Ferriero looks more like a mug shot than a photo op at a historic convention.

Pretty creepy. If anyone can turn the proverbial back room into a legally protected client attorney privilege sanctuary - that would be Dennis "The Menace" Oury, the Pay-To-Play poster boy.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
