DNC Monday night live blog and open thread

by: Scott Weingart

Mon Aug 25, 2008 at 09:32:49 PM EDT

They just showed the moving Ted Kennedy tribute video, and now the Liberal Lion of the United States Senate has taken the stage at the Pepsi Center.

Update #1
Kennedy: "I pledge to you that I will be there next January to witness" Barack Obama's inaguration. The crowd breaks out in chants of "Teddy, Teddy."

Update #2
Kennedy: Our destination is "not merely victory to our party but renewal of our nation."

Update #3
Kennedy closes his speech and exits to the strains of "Still the One". Presumably, the DNCC got permission from NY-19 Congressman John Hall to use the song; Hall has fired off cease and desist letters to both George W. Bush and John McCain for using the song in their campaign rallies.

great speech (4.00 / 2)
Think of how important this man has been to our lives.

Kennedy looked really good out there this evening. n/t (4.00 / 3)

What an amazing sight! (4.00 / 2)
God Bless Senator Kennedy!  He has been an absolute champion of progressive values his entire career and will continue to be a force for healthcare reform.  And, as you all heard, it will not be "straight against gay" anymore, something we should all be continuing the progress of.

I sure hope he will be there on Jan. 20, 2009.

Michelle Obama just gave her speech. (4.00 / 1)
There wasn't a dry eye in the place. ESPECIALLY in my house.  I teared up halfway through and didn't stop till just now.

She was amazing. I loved when she said that that was why she loved this country.  Biden stood up at that.  He looked so moved all through the entire speech.  It was impossible not to be.  As Olbermann said at the end.  "Case Closed."

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Between Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama... (0.00 / 0)
...this night was a grand slam!!!

The loving banter at the end amongst the Obama's clinched it.   That was America at it's best!!!

Of course, the Rovians will do their worst and try to reign over the democratic parade...but this time I don't think that garbage will work.

Enough with the imperial presidencies...let's get back to being decent human beings.

Crap on a cracker! (0.00 / 0)
Fell asleep just before Michelle Obama's speech. Hoping it's replayed tonight.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Michelle Obama Video.... (4.00 / 1)
Enjoy!

I hear a caller on talk radio this morning who criticized Mrs. Obama's speech for not having enough "substance" or the kind that Hillary provides.

It's a shame, but the truth is that Michelle Obama's job last night was to humanize herself and her family.

Why?

Because the essential thrust of the McCain/Rove campaign was/is to play on American's unconscious negative racial stereotypes and prejudices.

McCain knows that he already has the votes of conscious racists, no need to appeal to them directly (and of course it would look really bad).

So what they've done is to find all manner of semi-plausible pretexts to try to de-humanize Michelle and Barack Obama.

The trope is that he's an "angry young black man" who also did (does?) drugs and might even be a closet Manchurian Muslim Candidate.

That's what we're up against folks.

That's why Michelle Obama had to simply be herself last night in an effort to re-humanize her image.

I pray that enough light can be shed on the ugliness that the McCain/Rove "people" are counting on to "win".

Without "fear and smear" John McCain doesn't stand a chance of winning a fair debate on policy and history......so it's come down to this.

Someone, maybe Joe Biden, has to call out John McCain on a personal level and demand the he cut out this garbage.  If he does it, he redeems his soul.....more likely he'll just dig in his Ferragamo heels.

This speech should be extracted for some nifty commercials and Mrs Obama should be campaigning hard all over the country.

She'll make a great First Lady!!!
