Please, Barack, text me your VP soonish (repost)

by: Rosi Efthim

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 02:31:14 PM EDT

UPDATE: Seriously, I've been on the edge of my seat for hours now and it's starting to chap my ass. Anticipation just gives me acid indigestion and I just want this over with. So, I'm getting word by text as soon as Barack Obama decides to release me - and all of you - from this tension. Text VP to the following number: 62262. And then have some chocolate.  - - Rosi

Update #2: You know it had to happen. Somebody just hacked into the Obama VP notification number and sent me this text from 62262: Announcing my running mate! I am nominating Michael Phelps to be my Vice President. Thank you, and God bless Kerri Walsh - - Barack Obama           ... Uhhhh... Frankly? I suspect Shields. - - Rosi

Political obsessives all over New Jersey are signing up to get a text with the name of Barack Obama's VP choice, in a shrewd strategy to ensure that the campaign can later reach out and pull in those same people for last-minute GOTV efforts.

Cell phone numbers are not generally available for public searching, which increasingly makes phone-polling problematic as more and more people - especially those under 30- drop their land lines entirely. But cell numbers are also expected to play a critical role this cycle in making sure Obama supporters actually vote in November, and this makes Obama way better connected.

Obama's tech-savvy team is beautifully positioned to outperform McCain in the technology sweepstakes, particularly considering that McCain doesn't even know how to use a computer:

I am a (sic) illiterate that (sic) has to rely on my wife for all of the assistance that I can get.

Score, Obama. Want in on the fun? Text VP to 62262 to receive a text message on your mobile phone (normal rates apply). You can also sign up to hear by email here.

Meanwhile, let us know what you think in the poll on the flip.

Will the progressive netroots be upset with Biden or Bayh? I certainly hope not, even though Bayh was a prominent Iraq War supporter, and Bayh had a hand in that, too (as did Clinton). Sebelius is an attractive option, but she is mainly known for domestic policy, particularly reforming Kansas' taxation and public worker system. Kaine, who may be Obama's personal choice on some level, hasn't many great accomplishments as Va governor; but his "outside" status from Washington, as with Sebelius, and his swing state status make him attractive. A Republican governor gets to choose Bayh or Reed's replacement, should either be chosen, too. I'm rather pleased with any and all candidates on this list, though Clinton would be risky.

My choice (0.00 / 0)
was always Brad Henry, Governor of Oklahoma, or Chet Edwards, George W. Bush's Congressional Representative.

I don't think either will make it.  Sebelius or Kaine, I think - and I'm leaning towards Kaine.

Biden Will Fight Back (4.00 / 1)
I am sick and tired of having Democrats become punching bags every 4 years. I beleive Joe Biden will not take any shit from the Republican base.

Biden will be a good attack dog and that will be needed. Bush/Cheney/ Rove said and did anything and the wimpy Democrats sat back. I am confident Biden will not sit back.

We must win this year and Biden will be the best balance to Obama to get a victory.

Brilliant idea (0.00 / 0)
by the Obama campaign. I signed up for a text - something I've never done before (and I can't be the only one doing this for the first time).

Great potential for gotv later.

What does it say that I'm hoping for Joe Biden? (3.00 / 1)
I mean, JOE FREAKIN' BIDEN???  Senator MBNA?  Senator "I like you...you're the real deal!" to Alberto Gonzales?  THAT Joe Biden?

Is this what it's come to?

Sadly, yes.

Obama has shown that he can't throw an effective punch.  He's hamstrung by his pledge/attempts to be "postpartisan" -- something that doesn't exist.  He needs an attack dog, and he needs one badly.  And he needs one with foreign policy cred.  Biden fits the bill perfectly.  And frankly, we owe him for singlehandledly destroying Rudy Giuliani's White House bid with the immortal phrase, "A noun, a verb, and 9/11."  Think of what he can do with Senator POW Means a Free Pass to the Presidency.

It's almost too delicious to even contemplate.

Amen! (0.00 / 0)
Stop taking hits and start giving them.

Biden will not be nice and that is exactly what is needed.

why include Clark and snub Sebelius? (0.00 / 0)
Kathleen Sebelius is still being discussed as a prospective VP, albeit not nearly as much as Bayh, Biden, or Kaine, but still significantly more than Wes Clark who has become persona non grata at next week's convention.

Bill Richardson is probably a longshot, but he is still much more deserving of a spot than Clark.  I actually think that he would be the best VP choice, because he has the foreign policy credentials that Obama needs in a VP, but not to the same degree as Biden, whose dominance in this area could potentially make Obama appear small by comparison.

And as much as I dislike John Edwards and am glad that his political career has most likely come to an end, I would argue that he probably has more to offer to public life than Clark.

Sebelius (0.00 / 0)
Ah, because soapblox makes it hard to edit the poll once you've previewed it the first time. Sebelius is actually high on my personal list, and I was hoping someone would mention her in Comments. So thanks for doing just that.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Um (4.00 / 1)
"Sebelius or Kaine"?  What am I - chopped olive loaf?

Chopped olive loaf (4.00 / 1)
Thurman for VP!

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

You want to get me killed? (0.00 / 0)
VP?  With my mouth?  Oh Lordie!

[ Parent ]
why? (0.00 / 0)
Do you think that your mouth is much different than Biden's?  The two of you are cut from the same cloth.

there's a live stream of Joe Biden's driveway (0.00 / 0)
This is ridiculous.  See cnn.com/live

Richardson flying to Denver, not the Midwest (0.00 / 0)
Richardson just sent his campaign mailing list e-mail that he is flying to Denver. This may be his way of saying he is not flying to the Midwest, where Obama is supposed to announce his running mate.  Richardson probably couldn't act as a subordinate to anyone anyway.   I wish Obama would nominate Rush Holt for VP, since he would get the votes of people who work in high tech industries.  Science, engineering and IT employees are a big voting bloc.  Sebelius was one of the governors to sign that letter asking Congress to increase the number of H1-B visas, beliving employer hogwash that these is a shortage of high tech workers.   She joined Schwarzenegger.  Corzine and Richardson didn't sign that dung heap.

I predict it'll go out at 11 AM ET on 8/23. n/t (0.00 / 0)

Whenever I remove myself (0.00 / 0)
from one political mailing list, I receive ten fewer spams per day.
So I'll get the VP news a few minutes later than you all do.
