The Sad State of Lou Manzo

by: vingopal

Everyone remember Lou Manzo? The ex-assemblyman who runs for mayor of Jersey City every four years - Well apparently Mr. Manzo wasn't satisfied with his primary loss for the state senate last year - he's planning on making a 4th run for mayor next year except he's not too interested in issues, just looking for an easy way out...
vingopal :: The Sad State of Lou Manzo
I thought Lou Manzo was a good legislator and i worked for him on his primary campaign against HCDO candidate Sandra Cunningham. However, Mr. Manzo's recent mayoral plan has made me lose all respect for him as he just comes off like so many of the other "Hudson County Reformers" - pathetic and self-serving.

For those who remember, Jersey City Mayor Jeremiah Healy was involved in dispute outside his sister's tavern in Bradley Beach. He was trying to break up a couple who was in each others' faces. Bradley Beach police officers threw Healy to the ground where he got roughed up. Anyway, i never thought this was a big deal which annoyed me about so many of Healy's opponents, because they all thought it was a huge deal...which shows how sad their own platforms were. They couldn't attack the mayor on crime because crime has gone down in the city, they couldn't attack the mayor on jobs, because unemployment has gone down in the city and they couldn't attack the mayor on education because test scores went up during his tenure. The potholes are getting fixed and city seems to be going in the right track  so this seems to be the best the self-serving hopefuls wanted.

Lou Manzo seems to make no exception. With the recent decision of the removal of Newark Councilwoman Dana Rone, Manzo is hiring an attorney through his public advocacy group to see if Healy could be removed...which is beyond pathetic, not only because their situations were completely different (Councilwoman Rone used her office and position to break a law whereas Jerry Healy didn't say anything and only said he was mayor of Jersey City while he was getting thrown to the ground by police officers to show that he wasn't a random drunk and IT WAS more than 1 hour away from the city he represents - theres no trying to break a law here!) Now I don't think either of them warrants removal from office but a judge has made a decision on Dana Rone so now Lou Manzo wants to use the same basis on Jerry Healy. He is looking for a shortcut or anything to get him removed from office because he has nothing to run on what will be his 4th stunt for mayor.

I just find it incredibly pathetic to try to use something that happened miles away from Jersey City for your own self-serving needs because you can't find anything to say about his record.

Thank you Lou Manzo, another self-serving 'Hudson County Reformer'

Healy Is Likely Getting a "Bum Rap".... (0.00 / 0)
.....it's almost impossible to get a local judge to take a "civilian's word" over the local cops.

I suspect that if there was a full video/audio of the incident in question that it would be the cop who would be the one up on charges.

I might, of course, be wrong.  Maybe Healy was being a complete asshole; but I doubt it.  I suspect he was merely being treated as an "uppity" citizen when he acted as if he had any right to speak to a cop as if the cop was actually a public servant.  Some cops don't "take too kindly" to "lip".

The real answer/solution is to have every cop wear a lightweight recording device that provides audio/video of everything he does while on duty.    The tech for this exists and is relatively cheap.

It shouldn't weigh more than 8 ounces for a water resistant device that could record for 24 hours. (16GB SD cards could easily handle that).

Good cops doing their jobs right would, I dare say, welcome such an objective "witness" helping them to convict the "bad guys".

I'm no fan of Hudson pols in general; but if this is the only "sin" Healy has committed; then he deserves to keep his job.

PS  Any cop convicted of abusing their power and unjustly assaulting a civilian on duty should be mandatorily  sentenced to three times whatever the ordinary sentence would be.....no parole no leniency should be allowed.  (and of course the job and the pension would be forfeited).

I agree Nick (0.00 / 0)
and I think its sad that another elected official would use this as their sole interest to remove someone from office because he wants their job.
