It's Not Just The Republicans, Folks

by: huntsu

Thu Jul 17, 2008 at 07:36:46 AM EDT

Last week we brought you the happy and true story of Republican bigotry in Pemberton.

Today we get the Democratic side, with Belmar Mayor Ken Pringle stepping up to the plate to insult Staten Islanders, Italians and yellow haired people in what appears to be an official town newsletter.

Going after Staten Islanders?

"The spat ended the way most fights with SI girls do," the mayor wrote. "The SI woman grabbed the Boonton woman by the hair ... and began punching her face in."

He didn't stop there: Pringle made fun of the way Staten Islanders look, suggesting their attire is a "costume" and the women use too much hair spray.

Italians?

"They're always tanned to the color of coconut shells and easily identified by their plumage: satin shirts and short skirts on the females; Armani Exchange T-shirts and artfully distressed jeans on the males," he wrote.

"The call of the Guido is bellowing, and frequently slurred, invariably starting with the sound, 'Yo.'"

The tallow-haired?

Pringle ended his newsletter with a gem about two renters who told an inspector they didn't know how to take out garbage.

"Let us guess ... they're blonde," the item was headlined.

And the excuse?

Pringle admitted he went "over the top" in his attempt to highlight the bad behavior of some seasonal visitors in the quintessential Jersey shore town.

"It was meant as a humor device, not to insult anyone," he said. "If I don't make it funny, no one is going to read it."

Yeah, that last thing is just not true.  It wasn't funny at all, and now lots of people are reading it.

Everyone was ready to go after Pemberton, but not one of our own?

This article and post are offensive (0.00 / 0)
I have read Mayor Pringle's newsletter several times and cannot find one reference to Italians.  He does refer to "guidos" and I wonder where people get the audacity to make the crass and offensive assumption that this is a reference to Italians.

I am an Italian-American and I do not own anything satin or anything Armani.  I admit my jeans are distressed but it is from yardwork.

It seems to me that the newspaper and the author of this post may be guilty of exactly what they accuse the mayor.

Very disturbing to see this type of irresponsible nonsense in news print and of all places, posted here.

Guido is now and has long been a pejorative and bigoted slang term for ethnic Italians in New Jersey and the area.

Do you think he was talking about Swedes?  Columbians?  Koreans?

No.  We all know what the Mayor meant when he used the word, and we know that it was not meant kindly.

No its not (0.00 / 0)
The term guido is reserved for all cultures and refers to a type of lifestyle, behavior and appearance that is absolutely in no way unique to Italians and it is outrageus and offensive to assume that it is.

I am not offended by the word guido.  I am offended by people that link it to Italians.  I know many jewish, polish, irish asian and african americans that fit this stereotype and are indeed guidos.

I think it is offensive to assume that he was talking about Italians.  I used to live in Spring Lake and know very well who and what the Mayor is refering to and trust me it was not Italians.  Huntsu, you are really being offensive by pushing this issue and I don't think you understand what you are talking about here.

Pringle's target with guido was Italian-Americans.  This is my neck of the woods.  Trust me on that.

And his apology days later was reluctant and unsatisfying.

His language is blatant bigotry, no matter whether his stereotyping was something other than Italian-Americans.  A couple of days before this news, a 22-year-old Staten Island pedestrian tourist was killed when he was hit by a car in broad daylight.  The first comment at the app.com message board was "Good, one more bennie down,'' or something like that.

That's how "inspirational" Pringle has been with his bigotry.

He isn't the kind of Democrat you want to support.  You want to support Democrats who are moral leaders, not childish followers abusing office to satisfy childhood revenges.

Pringle behaves as an elitist, and I think I recall he had some sort of alliance (I'm not saying, just saying ...) with convicted extorter Brick Mayor Joe Scarpelli.

Pringle seems to have some deep insecurities, having grown up in Belmar as a dweeb and not reaching more than about 5'2'' or thereabouts.  Granted, the audience he targets can be obnoxious, but he never outgrew that kid who was locked into the gym locker.

Stuff the apple in him because he's done in politics.

isn't this the same mayor who a few years ago had a summer renter detained or had the cops called because he whistled when the mayor and his wife rode by on their bikes.  (I do not recall the exact story, just that i read it in the news)

From everything I've seen Mayor Pringle is a blowhard. His wife was a political insider who traded her connections for a position in the enegy sector then back into government and then to another company in the energy sector where she again trades on both her and her husband's connections.

They've got their own little fiefdom down in Belmar and give Democrats a bad name in so many ways.
