Carla Katz
Carla Katz, CWA Local 1034 President

Carla was smooth as silk, even under the enormous stress of the week. A real class act. Listen for yourself - JG

Each week, Blue Jersey Radio streams LIVE with New Jersey's latest political buzz, interviews with newsmakers, and your stimulating calls.

This week: We'll see if we can't get to the bottom of Carla-gate, with our guest - who else? - the inimitable Carla Katz herself!

We'll also take the financial temperature of New Jersey's House races. We'll check out what's doing with the O.J. (oops) Obama campaign here. And, best of all (since I'm back in New Jersey) we'll do it all without any of that caca-Maine-y phone and internet service trouble - Yey!

Tune in tonight at 8:30 p.m., and let's discuss.

We're LIVE from 8:30p-9:00p, and would love to hear from you. Just call: 646-652-2773

Talk to you then!

Compare the way Katz handled herself and answered questions to the way Shelton handled questions.

The difference is very clear. Paranoia vs. self assuredness.

I can guarantee you that the CWA Coup leaders are not happy with this type of comparison and they are absolutely livid as to the fact that they are no longer controlling the " news" about this takeover.

With each comment " getting out ' from the other side Shelton and Masters and the other coup leaders are looking more and more like union thugs.

What's your axe? (0.00 / 0)
You may well be right. I'd even bet you are. But we don't know. You write like you've got an angle in wanting to shape perception, just as much as Katz and Shelton do.

The last time I was an outsider identifying with one union leader against another, it was for Ron Carey against James Hoffa, Jr. I've since learned not to get too far beyond the facts I know.

Don't own an Axe (4.00 / 1)
It is impossible to write all the background material to justify every statement. After a period of time others either look on what you say as credible or not based on the events as they unfold.

Carla Katz lived on the edge. But she is not a crook and the takeover of her Union is simply a publicity stunt to discredit her.

It is a very dangerous precedent and it is a means of intimidation.

It was a coup and it was an act of union thuggery.

Under the CWA Constitution she should have been brought up on charges if charges were warranted. Instead the CWA Coup leaders decided to go the " public " route.

The actions of this Union directly effect the taxpaying public.People who work for the taxpayers, the stateworkers of New Jersey, are forced to join this Union as part of their employment agreement. A portion of taxpayer money goes to this union in the form of forced union dues.

WE, the taxpayers , have a right and obligation to make sure that the Union is not being run by thugs.

No axe here. Just a serious concern about a Union out of control.

Dvd Asks A Valid Question... (0.00 / 0)
....it's understandable that there is an impulse to "take care" before "taking sides".

But, based on all that has come out so far, and this wonderful (but all too brief) interview that Jay and Jason have conducted; my initial "gut reaction" continues to be confirmed.

If the national CWA is indeed telling the full truth in this matter; they should all be fired anyway for being incompetent bumbling assholes.

My sense is that firstamend7's take on this is correct.

If Ms Katz, or someone who knows her, is reading this; I urge her to go 100% public as soon as tactically possible!!!

I realize that there are long term legal/technical interests vs short term PR/morale (and moral ;-) considerations; but time really is a factor.

If the CWA (national) action is as dirty and ham-fisted as it seems to be; it needs to be "blown out of the water" asap.

If there is any provision in the union's charter for a "recall" initiative, this is the time to pull that trigger.

I would love to see MS Katz, backed by her colleagues, in an open ended news conference in which everyone just "spills the beans"...and if that takes four hours then so be it.    Get it all out on the table...and even challenge the folks who are behind this "coup" to a public (also open ended) debate on these matters!!!

The legal processes can/will drag out for years in cases like this.....meanwhile, the "facts on the ground" are that the national has "won".

My sense is that they must have been truly frightened and desperate to have ever thought that such a clumsy application of raw and rotten "power" could work.

On the other hand; if this is allowed to fade into the back ground and simply emerge a series of long drawn out court cases over the next five years....then their strategy will have succeeded.

Here's a few words and notes that express my own thoughts and emotions toward all who would oppose the spirit of freedom and justice!  (Whether they do so "legally" or not.)

She has never had a problem with the first.  The second....

Not So Much.

Which is a big part of why we have wound up here.

Saying that Carla is "credible" is incredible (2.00 / 1)
There haven't been any accusations of her being a "thief."  This is probably why nothing has gone to Chris Christie (to answer your earlier comments), because there is nothing "criminal" in what she has done.

However, hiring a guy with no labor background to run your national leadership campaign and paying him with dollars from union member dues (aka "taxpayer money" according to you) is a problem.  Making contributions to candidates who have nothing to do with your members in order to boost your personal profile is a problem.  Retaliating against dissidents (depending on how you do it) may create a problem.

Let me teach you something (0.00 / 0)
The CWA National Union said she spent $700,000 without authorization. That is a lie. CWA is a statewide union and has no jurisdictional restraints. There are 120 Legisaltors and many county and municipal people who run for office. All of them are important to  a state wide union.

You did exactly what you have been telling everyone else not to do. You ran with the lies from the National Union and Shelton and never bothered to check to see if they had any validity.

If the CWA wanted to charge Katz they shoud have charged her properly. Instead they pulled this publicty stunt coup with the hope that they would just keep lying and that no one would check on their story. They are not worried about the facts or running a democratic union, all they want is to discredit Katz publicly.

The illegal use of political money by a Union is a  federal issue. Christie has nothing because there is nothing to give!

Who she hires and for what job is completely her perrogative. 100%! Every CWA union gives the President free reign. You should see some of the idiots that are hired. At least it seems this guy has a clue. So that " issue" was completely bogus.

Every week a form has to be filled out by the Union President . It is a federal form that has them account for what they do all week. This was something that was started under Bush to harrass the unions. If Katz did not account for her whereabouts it would be the Feds , not Masters and Shelton who would come down on her.

CWA is a weak, dysfunctional, banana republic Union that got caught doing a anti-union, anti-democratic stunt and has once again made itself look foolish.

[ Parent ]
The truth will out. (0.00 / 0)
One advantage of anonymity is that no one knows who fell when they went too far out on a limb.

I am not commenting on the validity of the charges, but there are facts already in evidence that don't look good for her.

I do not believe that you can hire someone (and pay them with union members' dues) for the sole purpose of helping you run for higher union office.  Maybe I am wrong about that, but I doubt it.  You say that you aren't CWA (although you make a lot of claims that would tend to indicate either bravado or inside knowledge) and you have given clues that you reside south of 195, so how do you know whether Reiner has a clue or not?  His actions of yesterday don't give that indication.

[ Parent ]
Fairness (0.00 / 0)
CWA has done nothing to maintain Katz's rights under their Constitution.

She at least deserves to be treated like every other CWA member. There are very specific rules pertaining to Union wrongdoing that CWA is not following.

Justice and fairness and due process is all that is being asked. Shelton and Masters have attempted to manipulate the press for the sole purpose of discrediting Katz.

Now they leaked one sided documents to the Star Ledger knowing that Katz can not refute them in the Press because she needs to defend herself in future hearings.

This is the type of tactic that this " democratic " union uses when they are put in a corner.
