I Swear, I Peed My Pants When I Read This

I just, I mean, c'mon, guys ... can't you even try?

But ultimately, said Wilson, "If Chris [Christie] is the nominee, his running mate for lieutenant governor has to be someone who shares his priorities and his sense of ethics."

That makes veteran state Sen. Joseph Kyrillos (R-Monmouth) a very viable candidate in the state chairman's opinion.

"Joe Kyrillos is a longtime friend of Chris who understands the nuts and bolts of government," said Wilson

Longtime friend of Chris?  Understands the nuts and bolts of Government?

Here's the story of these longtime friends and how they used the "nuts and bolts of government" to get Chris a job.

The year, 2000: Joe Kyrillos is a State Senator, Chris Christie is raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for George Bush for President and serving as the corporate counsel for the campaign.  Christie makes it known he wants to be a US Attorney after helping the Republican nominee.

Bush wins the White House (OK, sort of, but go with me) and it is released that Chris Christie "won't receive any consideration for a top federal appointment."

The year, 2001: Joe Kyrillos becomes the New Jersey state GOP chair, and suddenly Christie money starts flowing into the state party's coffers.  Christie and his wife put up $20,000 though they had never given anywhere near that amount before.  Christie's brother and his wife each gave $37,000 for a close family contribution of $94,000 in the first couple months after Kyrillos took office.

And by the time the summer is over Christie learns that he will be nominated to the post of US Attorney for NJ.

The year, 2002: Chris Christie is sworn in to office in January.  Two months later his brother -- remember the brother? -- donates $225,000 to the federal party.  Add in a few more $25,000 checks and a few for $5 and $10K and the total amount donated by the Christie family around the time of the job search and swearing in passes a half million dollars.

To summarize.  No job for Chris, family friend gets powerful position, Chris's family gives friend six figure donations, Chris gets job, Chris's family quadruples the donation.

And these two "share a sense of ethics" that the Republican chairman thinks should guide the state.

Hank Paulson Sells $8 M. Condo To a Well-Connected Banker

When it was reported last week that Treasury Secretary and former Goldman Sachs chairman and C.E.O. Hank Paulson sold his two-unit apartment at the Millennium Tower on West 67th, no one mentioned that the deal was an inside trade.

According to city records, his buyer happened to be Goldman Sachs managing director Tony Lauto.

Reached at his office, Mr. Lauto confirmed that he owned an apartment a few floors down from his former boss and had been trying to buy a neighboring unit to expand. But he wasn't having any luck.

So when he heard the Paulson place was for sale, he rushed upstairs. Despite a tremendous amount of interest in the old C.E.O.'s uptown-facing apartment, it was easy for Mr. Lauto to introduce himself. There was more, after all, than just Mr. Lauto's current job at Goldman. His little brother happens to be John Lauto, the C.E.O. of Goldman's stock specialist, Spear, Leeds & Kellogg, and a member of the New York Stock Exchange's Director Candidate Recommendation Committee for 2006.

Why might that matter? Before joining the Bush administration, Mr. Paulson was a NYSE board member who was loudly critical of former exchange chairman Richard Grasso's compensation package. Goldman president John Thain was named as the stock exchange's C.E.O. in December of 2003.

His Brother's Keeper
Posted on 09-07-2004 2:18 PM EDT

When 2000 Pioneer Chris Christie was appointed as U.S. attorney for New Jersey, he was told he'd have to back off from his fundraising activities for Republican candidates in general, and for Bush in specific. But the Newark Star-Ledger reports that his brother, Todd Christie seems to have picked up the family slack.

While strict rules prohibit older brother Chris from raising funds, no such limits are there for the younger Christie. Since the summer of 2001, Todd Christie and his wife have donated more than $400,000 to various GOP coffers. In comparison, the couple had donated less than $12,000 in the time before Chris began lobbying for the U.S. attorney's job. Todd Christie also is closing in on "Super-Ranger" status, which would denote that he also raised at least $300,000 for the Republican National Committee.

Todd Christie is straightforward in acknowledging that some of his contributions have been made with his brother's political future in mind. "You want to do everything you can to stay active at a time when he can't," Todd said.

Despite calls from some in New Jersey for Chris Christie to pursue the governor's seat next year, his brother contends that there is no collusion between the two of them, and suggests that the biggest change has been his financial situation. He came into a large sum of money -- $100 million -- in the fall of 2000 when Goldman Sachs purchased his Wall Street firm, Spear, Leeds & Kellogg. That gave him plenty of extra cash to spend for a president and Republican Party he admired.

Nonetheless, some critics say this activity comes close to the line, especially given the fact that Chris Christie has made his reputation in the U.S. attorney's office by going after New Jersey's political corruption, which is widely seen to be rampant. "A U.S. attorney should be circumspect about his family members' role in the political process while you have the power of grand juries, subpoenas and search warrants at your disposal," said Michael Murphy, the former Morris County prosecutor and once Democratic gubernatorial candidate. "It has the potential to harm the process and at the very least, cast a shadow over the impartiality of the process."
