Vandervalk: School construction funding = pork

by: Juan Melli

Mon Jun 23, 2008 at 01:43:16 PM EDT

Joe Donahue/Star Ledger:
Assemblywoman Charlotte Vandervalk (R-Bergen) added that even as Democrats boast that they have ended so-called "Christmas Tree" spending in their legislative districts, they are using the multi-billion-dollar school construction bill to try to buy legislative votes for the new budget."

The pork has gone from several hundred million to $3.9 billion,'' she said.

Corruption Hall Monitor (4.00 / 3)
This is one of the most corrupted programs run by the state.  If they're not doing anything to change that, other than the webcams, no one should support more funding.

The court ordered new schools; what we got was pay-to-play, patronage, pay offs, and rebuilding the rebuilt because of contamination.  This program has served as a reminder of how messed up things are in Trenton.  As a state we can't afford to continue shoveling money down the same corrupt pit.

It's hard to disagree with the comment. (4.00 / 1)

Yes, we need better schools, but no one (in charge) seemed to care about wisely spending all the money that was previously set aside for schools.  Personally, I think the state has to go really slow with additional funding to ensure that it isn't misspent like the earlier appropriations were.

I read... (0.00 / 0)
somewhere that Ed Nefsky (sorry can't remember his name exactly) was that guy in charge, who moved slowly and made sure things were on the up and up at the SCC and money wasn't wasted. The problem was, he was too careful for Gov. McGreevey. I think he'd been the head a year or two and not many of the projects were started while Mr. Nevsky did his due diligence. McGreevey wanted to have SCC show some 'results' quickly. He replaced Ed with someone who would get things rolling.
Obviously, that was foolish. We need Mr. Nefsky or a George Zoffinger back in charge.

T&E (0.00 / 0)
I thought the clause read Thorough AND EFFICIENT?!? Why hasn't anyone brought suit against the Abbott ruling in they have FAILED the T&E clause?

Pimp my schools (0.00 / 0)
In Elizabeth, it's easy enough to look good spending all that money, but not so easy to prove how much good it's  doing.

What I want to know... (0.00 / 0)
Is originally, it was 2.5 billion. That's what was needed to get going again. Then somehow another 1.4 billiion is tacked on. I want to know, who asked for it, what district it is for, and what they are going to do with the extra 1.4 specifically.
I mean, a billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon, we're talking real money.
