Why a paper trail is necessary

by: Thurman Hart

Mon Jun 23, 2008 at 12:17:39 PM EDT

When I pointed out that Hudson County, once again, couldn't seem to make its electronic vote machines work, a "commenter" took umbrage with my suggestion that there might be some funny business going on.
Instead of this "bomb", or to ease the conspiracy theorists rants, why not just look at the current Hudson County Clerk's Live Election Website where it reports all districts in?

Well, if you actually look at the results, it raises more questions than it answers.  So we have us a recount:

"We had very disturbing reports of machine malfunctions, a challenger going into the voting booth in School 8 and a board of elections worker who we heard was asleep on the job," she said yesterday. "It was a real learning experience of how things are run up there."

In seven or eight districts in the Heights, she said, Romano got more votes than U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg and U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman, D-Fair Lawn, said Garcia-Keim.

Apparently, Frank Lautenberg is less popular in the Jersey City Heights than an  unknown Hoboken police captain.  Or, if you prefer, more people were willing to vote off the line for Senator than for Freeholder.  Given that Andrews had a really weak showing in Hudson County (duh!), that doesn't seem logical.

It's even more interesting to come up with a scenario for people not voting for Rothman - who was unopposed - but deciding to vote for Romano for Freeholder.  That makes absolutely no sense - Freeholder races are notorious for low turnout.  Most Freeholder candidates would be happy if the number of votes cast in their election was even close to equal that cast for either the Senator or Congressman.

I don't have much faith in the recount process, though.  Make the jump and I'll explain why.

Thurman Hart :: Why a paper trail is necessary
Ines Garcia-Keim and Frank Raia filed separate requests for recounts and, yesterday afternoon, board of elections workers opened up the voting machines and printed out the tallies.

All the recount does is make sure that the reported totals match the totals recorded by the machines.  If we are talking about unscrupulous poll workers - which is what we are talking about - then it would be just as easy for them to cast a few dozen false ballots.  I'm not saying that this is what happened, or that any of our poll workers are untrustworthy.  I'm simply saying that if poll worker perfidy is suspected then this recount isn't likely to smoke it out.

I don't know - maybe we can get Zimbabwe to send poll observers...

Oh boy... (0.00 / 0)
here we go again, Area 51, UFOs, Bigfoot, JFK assassination and another candidate getting rooked out of a Hudson County election.

Poll workers are grossly underpaid, are poorly educated on the process and put in long hours, thus it does not attract the best quality, should we be surprised?

If you do your homework, and follow the clerks site through the links to the detailed primary 08 results in a PDF file, you will find what you are looking for.

If you were knowledgable about Hudson elections, you would be well aware a few years back, Freeholder Fitzgibbons lost his home town of Hoboken in a primary, but carried the other parts of his district in the JC Heights to win.

Also you will see from previous results especially in a contested primary election, voters bullet vote the contested office while many don't vote for the other uncontested offices on the same ticket. NOTE: I DID NOT SAY JUST DIDN'T BOTHER TO VOTE.

Perhaps if the two losing candidates spent more time in other parts of their district outside of Hoboken, instead of trying to win local turf battles for future elections in Hoboken, the results may have been different for them.

In fact, these two losing candidates spent a lot of money and resources wrongly targeting voters. Their campaigns sent slick glossy mailers into the wrong JC freeholder districts as well as had their campaign crews in the wrong districts, advertising their candidate to voters who could not even vote for them.

These two losing candidates might be better spending their time looking in those JC freeholder districts outside their own where they spent a lot of political campaign capital, then asking for a recount. There in those districts, they might find some of those "missing votes" who still can't vote for them but then there will be no need to spend taxpayer dollars on a  recount blaming others for their election loss.

Nothing to see here, move along

you should try reading for comprehension instead of reading for an opportunity to play the apologist.  Post the results to prove your point.

By the way, I agree that the problem with the non-HCDO candidates is that they ignored the Heights - and I have written to that effect in the recent past.  Maybe you can quit looking for Bigfoot long enough to find out what you are talking about before you criticize me.

For a guy who alleges they teach political science at a state college in Hudson County maybe you should be the apoligist? Do your "own homework" and look for the link yourself. It's not hard, try it, honestly you will find it's easier then looking for Bigfoot or coming up with some silly allegation about a primary election which holds no water, just to fill space.

For a guy who spouts off about elections then does not even bother to vote, you sure have a lot to say about absolutely nothing.

It's time for the students you teach at the University to demand their money back!

I can easily find the links.  The info only goes to 2001.  There hasn't been any time that is available on that page that Lautenberg was challenged, Rothman wasn't, and the District 5 seat was open.  In other words, there's no direct comparison.

It isn't up to me to prove your point.  That's up to you.  But if you feel better by slinging stones at me, then go ahead.  I've been called worse - by better.

Really, you gotta go there? (0.00 / 0)
Thurman, now really, "dumbass"?

Now you stoop to this level? Name calling?

Your comments have be so off base, and not that is not the first time they have been.. remember the Frank Hague attribution professor? Then you blamed some erronous web link istead of picking of a book and doing some real fact checking. Poor research. Yeah not your fault, we know.

Just admit you have no idea what you were talking about here (again) and just came up with some conspiracy theory which makes no sense. You were told why the voting pattern which you said you did not understand and questioned but decided to  call names.

Look at the freeholder primary elections which were contested in the past then compare them to the top of the ticket candidates votes cast professor. then get back to us after you do your homework.

The professor has been insulted with the truth forced onto him.

Yeah, Students, demand your money back!

The fact remains (0.00 / 0)
The Sequoia Advantage voting machine is error prone. Brennen Justice center has the numbers. Essex County clerk Chris Durbin has the numbers..

yadda yadda yadda

Seems there is at least one here who needs to have that lesson pounded into their head. Repeatedly.

A non transparent process, that cant be audited is unacceptable.

Throw smoke if you want, but I see thru the bullshit.

Check out my 3 paragraph primer on Polywell Fusion.

Those machines never worked. This scam...cause that's what it is a scam... worked for Fritz and it was used for Romano.

Screw a recount, they should do a do-over like they did in Hoboken's Ward 4 (Campos vs Zimmers)

On a side note, I'm an NJCU student &  I believe my money was well spent on Thurman's class.

Let's have a do over. (0.00 / 1)
Yeah, let's have a do over because the losing candidates, feel bad about it. Makes a lot of sense to waste more taxpayers dollars despite no wide spread election day violations or problems.

Asking for "a do over" election just shows everyone you never learned anything at NJCU, No wonder why the locals call it Crayola University!

Did you even bother to vote in that election, unlike your Political Science Professor?
