- PLEASE CALL- Affordable Housing Bill Before NJ State Senate on Monday

by: koleary

Thu Jun 19, 2008 at 02:04:23 PM EDT

There is a bill which has passed the NJ state Assembly and will be before the Senate on Monday which would eliminate the use of regional contribution agreements helping to reduce economic segregation by forcing wealthy communities to build affordable housing within their borders rather than paying poor communities to meet their responsibilities.  It would also allow non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity to access the money that these municipalities are accumulating in their affordable housing trust funds.

The vote is likely to be close so it is important that our state senators receive calls and emails supporting the legislation.

To find your state senator you can click here http://www.votesmart.org/ and enter your zip code.

When calling or emailing please refer to bill S1783 and ask them to support affordable housing.

Some talking points:

¨       Use of RCA's (regional contribution agreements) promotes economic segregation

¨       Working families should have access to decent housing

¨       It is particularly beneficial for public servants such as police, firefighters, teachers, etc. to be able to afford to live in the communities that they serve

¨       Providing housing where people work, which includes both the office parks in the suburbs as well as the offices warehouses and factories in the cities, reduces the number of miles driven per capita and is therefore good for both energy conservation and the environment.
