Obama takes the lead

by: Thurman Hart

Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 06:12:55 PM EDT

Rasmussen polling just released a poll that has Obama ahead of McCain in New Jersey by a measure of 48-39, with 6% going for an unnamed third-party candidate and another 6% undecided.

The report continues:

The new survey -- conducted 24 hours after Obama achieved the number of delegates necessary for the nomination -- found McCain being backed by 83% of Republicans while 78% of Democrats pledged themselves to Obama.

The big surprise is found down at the bottom:

Just 23% of New Jersey voters say President Bush is doing a good or an excellent job. Fifty-two percent (52%) say he's doing a poor job.

Seriously - who are these people that think Bush is great and what does he have to do to change their minds?  I recently heard a political operative say, "Your base are the people who stay with you when you are wrong."  I really don't understand that - because if someone is wrong, I'm going to be one of the first saying so - but it would seem that there should be some limit to what people can call "excellent".  Isn't there?

McCain has a slight lead in male voters (46-42) while Obama leads among female voters (53-34).

McCain breaks the 50% mark in only one age cohort - voters from 30 to 39 (51%).  Obama breaks that mark in two cohorts - 18 to 29 (73%) and 50 to 64 (52%).

Obama leads in all income cohorts, with more than 50% support, until you break $100K - then McCain holds a plurality of 44-41.

McCain gets a majority of voters who attend religious services "about once a month" (56%) and "more than once a week" (64%), as well as the apparently non-self-aware "unsure" (how can one not be sure of their own church attendance?) (69%). Obama has a majority among those who never attend (58%) and those who attend "occassionally" (58%).

Interestingly, Obama has a plurality of those who attend "two or three times a month" (48-31) while McCain leads among those who attend "nearly every week" (48-45).

And to answer my own question - the people who give Bush an "excellent" rating are mostly in the 30-39 group (22%).  They are mostly Republican (21%) (oddly, 4% are Democrats).  21% are Conservative and 23% are unsure of their ideology (which may explain a lot).  25% of those who claim Bush is an excellent President make less than $25,000 a year - so they are apparently masochists, too.  26% attend church more than once a week - and if you make that little, I suppose you need to pray a lot.

is trending towards the Democrats, but I suppose as a group will always be influenced by Reagan.

That irreducible base (0.00 / 0)
It's been our experience over too many years in several states that there is a hard core of right-wing voters that hovers around 25-30%--nothing shakes them.

Only 12% think Dubya is "excellent" (0.00 / 0)
I think the more interesting question is when people were asked to choose between "winning the war" and "bringing the troops home" that 60% chose to bring the troops home.

Here's what I want to know (4.00 / 1)
Who are the 16% who DON'T think Bush is doing a good job and plan to vote for McCain anyway?  What this poll clearly indicates is that the media meme of "John McCain Is A Maverick" is retaining its hold on the collective consciousness.  The message that we have to get out there is McCain's actual record -- and what he promises for the future.  Perhaps he was a "maverick" at one point, but he isn't one any longer.  And we have to grab that 16% and show them.

haven't even come around to Paul Mulshine's view  of Bush.
