Ferriero puts out Glossy Ads for Re-election

by: carolh

Fri Jun 06, 2008 at 12:00:08 PM EDT

Well, I just witnessed the first glossy ads I can remember for Joe Ferriero's re-election campaign.  Guess he is worried.  Like a Michael Wildes office wall, they are plastered with photos of him with all sorts of "very important people".

The glowing endorsements are from:

Bob Menendez
Jon Corzine
Dick Codey
Steve Rothman
Dennis McNerney
Paul Sarlo

Missing from the endorsements are any Dems in Bergen County who aren't beholden to Joe for THEIR re-election.

He's worried all right.  He's spent a lot of $$$ advertising for his re-election.  TWO different ads.  One of which takes credit for ANYWHERE dems won in Bergen even if they won DESPITE him.  Like in Tenafly.

He's gonna need all the help he can get.

I guess my question would be (4.00 / 2)
who's planning to run against him?

I will tell you (0.00 / 0)
on Sunday nite.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Actually, I'll tell you sooner (4.00 / 1)
just cause I like you Jeff:)  I made a new diary to give you more info.  It is none other than our fearless RBD Campaign manager - Jack Savage -Councilman from Maywood!

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

all the help he can get? (0.00 / 0)
Don't be ridiculous.  His candidates won on tuesday.  If all 1100 CC members show up, he will get at least 700 votes.  Also, what is the problem with putting out a glossy piece of literature?  The BCDO isn't paying for it and I'm sure the few bucks he spent to make his literature look nice will resonate with some folks as a reminder of how far BCDO has come since 1998.  You have a tendency to turn everything he does into something to attack.

"That we accept the world as it is does not in any sense weaken our desire to change it into what we believe it should be-it is necessary to begin where the world is if we are going to change it to what we think it should be." -Saul Alinsky

There you are. (0.00 / 0)
Granted - his FREEHOLDER and CLERK and Bergenfield Council candidates won on Tuesday.  And, nice of you to admit that Ganz, McPherson, Walton, and the Bergenfield folks are purely HIS candidates.  Yes sir, they are alrighty - not allowed to speak or even BREATHE without Danny Ortega from BCDO there to hold their hands.

They won the PRIMARY, not the GENERAL election.  And they had to ride on Lautenberg's coattails to do it.  And so congratulations, they have the NOMINATION.  However, they do not have the SEATS yet.

There may be some Republicans who would like to weigh in on your premature celebrations.  In Westwood, when Ferriero threw Gail Frasco off the line right before her re-election  -  the Ferriero-crats LOST in the General.

We actually won RBD Council seats in Englewood and Elmwood Park.  It will be much easier for the RBDs to win in the General than HIS candidates.

As for the County Committee seats, which were actually WON on Tuesday and are safe for two years now:
Tenafly added a new RBD CC man and so is 100% pure RBD land.  We WON a majority of RBDs in Englewood, Teaneck, Maywood.  We added seats in Bergenfield and Westwood.  Who knew Tuesday was Rabbit season?  But we unseated Clancy's girlfriend -  as well as McNerney's own mom.  We're still waiting to hear what happened in many places.  But the upshot is we ADDED more CC seats than we lost.
I'd be pretty nervous about that math right there.
Lets see, as an engineer - I fancy myself pretty good at math - so here's my take:

At Joe's "re-election" last time only about 600 or so folks made it.  Now, 300 RBD sympathizers puts us somewhere in the range of making a dent in his confidence.

However if you factor in the CC members who were urged to show up for Walton's coronation but were greeted with a locked door and a note, that might cut in some more to Joe's share of votes.  Next, there are only so many Municipal Chair positions - one for each town and about 75% of them have county jobs, so there are only about say 53 or so who owe Joe their jobs.

The rest are free to vote their minds - provided the vote is SECRET.  They may be rethinking their allegiance now that the subpeonas are flying around the county.

So, Joe may have about 100 hardcore supporters who have sold their souls long ago and can't vote against him.  But, there are twice as many RBDS than that.  There are also many who want to do the right thing, they just never had a candidate to rally around before that had a chance.

Next - there were a lot of folks in the room the day we were supposed to have the candidates speak - but Joe had that AFTER the vote and would not allow anyone else to speak.  It was obvious to everyone in the room - except for Joe's loudmouthed goons that the Bergen County Democratic Organization has become an oxymoron.

Perhaps THAT may sway a few more.

If Joe wasn't worried about his chances, he wouldn't have wasted a dime on glossy mailers.  He used to just rely on plain letters to the CC members.

He's afraid he may lose.  If any other RBDs are out there - bring good id to the election and a video camera -  they will try EVERY TRICK in the book to disenfranchise you - believe me - I know.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

a question... (0.00 / 0)
I like your optimism, but I'll still say that Ferriero looks pretty safe to me.  My question, though, is why hasn't there been more outreach to the sitting members of the BCDO in the past two years?
You're correct that there are many members, many of which were elected on the BCDO line, who want new, reform-minded leadership for the party. What steps have been taken to identify those members and organize them into a "reform caucus", if you will. Have there been difficulties getting mailing addresses for the sitting committee members?

[ Parent ]
How do you know (0.00 / 0)
there hasn't been outreach?  Are you a BCDO member who feels like we somehow missed you?

It's not like we've been hiding.  We welcome any BCDO member who would like to do the right thing.  The main issue we've been dealing with is that most of the folks we talk to are with us in spirit, but they are afraid of retaliation if they either speak up, or are seen as speaking to an RBD.  So, we are putting ourselves out there for all the ones who are afraid to.  Our hope is that when given an actual choice and a secret vote - - the BCDO rank and file will choose democracy - like they did at the Bylaws vote.

It is not BCDO members we have issues with  - WE ARE BCDO members.  It is the LEADERSHIP of the Current Chairman or his TYRANNY (lets be honest here) that we have a problem with.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

these are all fantastic images you are painting but it is far fetched.

I understand that (0.00 / 0)
the Freeholder nomination was a long shot and Quixotic, and that the nomination of Gulack last time was nothing more tha a protest vote, but we really do care mightily about replacing the BCDO leadership and getting rid of Pay-To-Play. The ONLY way to do that is by winning more seats on the County Committee.  Which we did.  I don't feel like a loser - I kept my County Committee seat.  Did you keep yours?

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

[ Parent ]
The Bergen County Sheriff (0.00 / 0)
actually wrote a mailer on behalf of a County Committee woman in Closter that NOBODY in her own district even KNEW - simply because an RBD was running against her.  She must be a VERY IMPORTANT Ferriero-crat.  That is probably why our RBD candidate was treated to a realife version of the Sopranos.
Face it - your friends are nervous.  You sound extremely shrill.  I am sorry I accused you of shredding papers ala Fawn Hall.  You were probably just helping Ferriero's minions comply with all the subpeonas.  Forgive me.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

yeah yeah (0.00 / 0)
I read that post, I don't get what Kathy was talking about.  I have a difficult time stringing her stories into something cohesive.  The logic you and her are using to paint these pictures (in your case the portrait of a coming victory for your Gulackocrat crazy friends and in Kathy's case the image of a victim in some bizarre scenario that is difficult to follow) at any rate, the logic you use is reminiscent of Hillary Clinton's Delegate and Popular Vote Math.  Also, I am just an observer, I do not appreciate any insinuations of wrong doing on my part by you.  Cease.

She was upset (0.00 / 0)
for being treated unfairly and intimidated by some rather large Ferrierocrat goons who know the Sheriff.  If she had some BCDO folks in Closter who actually felt like running some Dem candidates instead of using the cash from dems in Closter to pay the Borgata and follow an unwritten rule not to wage fights against Cardinale's guys, Kathy wouldn't be so upset.

Ferriero has just been using the 39th and 40th as ATMs for his victory parties.  And the Ferriero-crats in Closter like never having to work to hard.

They freaked out at actually having to campaign for a Committee seat.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

[ Parent ]
Wait...what? (0.00 / 0)
There's an unwritten rule not to challenge Cardinale?  It seems like Ferriero would love to take out Cardinale.  He's been putting tons of money into district 39 races and trying to recruit more viable candidates against the D39 R's over the years.  Say what you will about whatever else he does, but he seems to relish the challenge of ousting those bums.  If he can get rid of the grumpy and out of touch Cardinale, is that such a bad thing?  More Dems in general is a good thing, right?

I don't mean to be snippy or an apologist, but it does seem like he's trying...I for one wouldn't complain if John Rooney was retired to a greener pasture(aka, glue factory).

Which races, exactly? (0.00 / 0)
the Ariyan one doesn't count because it was after we got complaints that $$$ from districts 39 and 40 went to the Borgata.

I remember that the democrats put up a great challenge to cardinale last year.

Which is exactly the race you chose to cite (as I expected you would)  because it is the only one - which occurred AFTER RBDs complained about Joe's lack of actually tryint to elect Dems in 39.  Pick another example.....

center of the universe carol (0.00 / 1)
you actually think that you and the rest of the lorettacrats blogging about some stupid gripe about a party encouraged a contested state senate campaign?  Dumont, Demarest, Closter, Cresskill, Haworth....  all of these towns and more in the 39th and 40th have had well funded and serious democratic candidacies and have seen great success in recent years.  Ferriero knows how to grow the party from the ground up and he has made winning the 39th a priority, but it takes time.  The 40th will take even longer.  The demographics of many of these towns are beginning to trend democratic but they are still light years away from the limousine liberals in a place like tenafly.  Not every democratic candidate has the luxury of of 37th district electorate.

[ Parent ]
It was not (0.00 / 0)
just about one party.  We were unable to get the books we requested last year to show exactly where money was spent in the 39th and 40th.

It takes a while to grow a party, but it takes longer if you make deals with the Republicans not to tread in certain places.

Don't forget  - Mr. Oury and Mr. Ferriero worked very closely with a REPUBLICAN in their little Grant Consulting enterprise.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

ELEC regulations require every expenditure, no matter how small, to be reported.  Those reports are available online for anyone to review, and should account for every penny spent by the BCDO.

Also, if your claims that the only contributors to the BCDO are corrupt professionals are to be believed, then wasn't it their money that paid for the party at the Borgata?

[ Parent ]
Re: (4.00 / 1)
This is a separate issue from ELEC regulations. The BCDO violated its own bylaws by not providing the books.

It couldn't be that there was an embarrassing financial situation that had to be hidden, could it? :-)

[ Parent ]
bylaws (4.00 / 1)
the BCDO bylaws require that the organization's treasurer "Prepare and file such financial statements as may be required of the County Committee by law, including the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission reports and that these reports shall be made available at the Democratic County Headquarters for inspection;"

From what I understand, the only financial statements required to be kept by law are the ELEC reports.  Nothing in the bylaws requires the treasurer to open up the organization's checkbook for public inspection.

We were not able to inspect (0.00 / 0)
ANYTHING. The Bylaws also provide for a convention to be called if there are enough valid Committee signatures.  Joe Ferriero has STILL not called the convention.  He is afraid we will actually be allowed to speak.

He is a dictator - nothing more.
