Andrews: Clinton campaign strategy had "racial overtones"

by: Juan Melli

Fri Jun 06, 2008 at 01:05:44 AM EDT

Josh Margolin has the disturbing news.
U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews, who supported Hillary Clinton throughout the primary season, disclosed he received a phone call shortly before the April 22 Pennsylvania primary from a top member of Clinton's organization and that the caller explicitly discussed a strategy of winning over Jewish voters by exploiting tensions between Jews and African-Americans.

"There have been signals coming out of the Clinton campaign that have racial overtones that indeed disturb me," Andrews said at his campaign headquarters in Cherry Hill Tuesday night after he lost his bid for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination.

"Frankly, I had a private conversation with a high-ranking person in the campaign ... that used a racial line of argument that I found very disconcerting. It was extremely disconcerting given the rank of this person. It was very disturbing."

Andrews said the phone call came after he angered the Clinton camp by making some positive comments about Obama. He would not disclose the caller's name because of the private nature of the conversation.

"Comments like these, coming so soon after Congressman Andrews' crushing defeat, are sad and divisive," said Clinton's chief national spokesman, Phil Singer.

Andrews stood by his statements and said: "I would hope that all Democrats can put this divisiveness behind them. I'm glad the Clinton campaign is finally about to change its tone." He said he made his comments only after his primary loss to Sen. Frank Lautenberg because "I didn't want people to think I was trying to win over Obama supporters in the primary."

No denial from the Clinton campaign. Just a low blow. It wasn't looking likely that the Clintons would be willing to go through the VP vetting process, but if this is true, this eliminates her outright from contention.

some thoughts (4.00 / 1)
1.  This is terrible, but what many people believed. I am very disappointed.

2.  Andrews was right to wait, this had no place in the senate primary.

3.  Does this mean Andrews thinks his political career is over?  Between those who already were upset over this run, and the Clinton loyalists  -- they called Richardson 'Judas' for an endorsement -- who won't forgive him for this, he has made a lot of enemies.

Hmmmm (0.00 / 0)
So let me get this straight...
1) Rob Andrews pledges NOT to challenge Senator Lautenberg for the 2008 nomination, but goes back on his word.
2) Rob Andrews actively supports Hillary Clinton's candidacy when it appeared she had the nomination sewn up.
3) Rob Andrews uses disgraceful "ageist" attacks on Lautenberg throughout his primary campaign.
4) Rob Andrews bails on his support for Hillary as it becomes obvious that Obama gets the nom and now claims the Clinton campaign was using race as a weapon.

Apparently discrimination by age is OK, but by race is"...very disconcerting." So disconcerting that he raises the issue nearly 2 months after the fact.

Now, because his reputation with the entire NJ Congressional delegation is in tatters, his cache with the Clinton-wing of the party shattered (yes, there IS a Clinton-wing of the party, some refer to them as HALF the party), Andrews himself injects race into the conversation at the 11th hour to suck up to the now dominant Obama-wing in the hopes he can resurrect his political career.

Really??

bad calculation (4.00 / 1)
Andrews stayed with Hillary when most of the Camden group had already defected to Obama.  Right before the PA primary, there was a lot of talk about being "bitter" and Obama's "difficulties" connecting with the white working class.  Imagine the impact if he had come out with this back then.  Hillary's campaign would have been over.  Andrews being front and center on this would have given him a whole new entree to a bunch of people up north.  After all, we know that the NJ results would have been much more pro-Obama if the primary was later.

Why does Andrews bring all this up now, unless to try and redeem himself in those eyes he just recently poked a stick into?

Andrews played the cards wrong and is looking to redeem himself to those progressives he shunned in the hopes of a Clinton victory and through his ill-fated race for the Senate. He has lost the primary, his seat, most of his political good-will and must now suck up to the new kid on the block in hopes of a successful run for governor.

(BTW, using the argument that NJ would have been pro-Obama if voting was later is a ridiculous statement. Data from primaries such as Pennsylvania and Ohio suggest that the same demographics that caried these states for Clinton, exist in substantial numbers here in NJ; it's not hard to make the opposite claim that they would have done the same later in the process, especially as Senator Clinton was gaining momentum towards the end of the race.)

Surely, you jest (0.00 / 0)

As a former Ohio resident, NJ does not have the same demographics as Ohio or PA.   NJ is a much more progressive state.   Hillary took Ohio and PA mainly because of the uneducated white male population, which plays a much smaller role in NJ's political calculus.   It's unclear that Barack would have won NJ in a later primary, but it would have been alot closer as his viability and voter comfort level would have risen in the mean time to combat Hillary's regional advantage.
