The candidates debate

by: Juan Melli

Thu May 29, 2008 at 07:54:08 PM EDT

Rob Andrews just said on the NJ 101.5 debate that he supports a minimum wage of $15-16/hour.

Lautenberg wouldn't say what level he supports. "I don't think that one can place a dollar figure on it. It ought to be enough to support a family."

Round 1: Andrews 1, Lautenberg 0

Both candidate say they support marriage equality. Andrews also volunteered that he would favor repealing DOMA -- the Defense of Marriage Act - - which he notes both he and Lautenberg voted for.

Round 2: Andrews 2, Lautenberg 0

Update: I joined in late and got bored half way through, hence the weak coverage. Anyone else listen and catch anything interesting?

Speaking of debates, I was a little bored earlier today and put my photoshop skills to use...

OMFG (0.00 / 0)
I Lautenberg drunk?!?  No wonder he doesn't want to debate -- he sounds confused and clueless.

Andrews just slammed him when Lautenberg asked about Andrews' restricting the use of Pension funds.

the debate sucked and lacked any substance (0.00 / 0)

urge you guys to listen again (0.00 / 0)
Lautenberg was far more substantive. Andrews flip-flopped on bringing up age issue (said at the beginning of campaign he was against it before he was for it); flip-flopped on border fence (said he was for it before he was against it);  Iraq War (said he was for it before he was against it); inheritance tax (said he was for it before he was against it); lost count after that.  Lautenberg held his ground, added humorous comebacks, and had far more substantive answers.  Andrews seemed bitter. I'd give the debate to Lautenberg.

Andrews Won Hands Down (0.00 / 0)
Andrews again was much clearer and more succint than Lautenberg on the issues that were brought up during the debate.  Andrews, without a shadow of a doubt, is prooving time and time again that he has much more to offer new jersey as a U.S. Senator than Lautenberg.  Lautenberg's rambling/insecure style of answering questions during this debate makes it hard for anyone to conclude otherwise.

I think this is the point, though ... (0.00 / 0)
Lautenberg has always sucked in debates, yet has been a good Senator.  Andrews has always been a good debator, and has been a good Congressman.

Per PNJ

Prof. Brigid Harrison of Montclair State University read it the same way.

"Clearly when you consider Congressman Andrews's rhetorical style and the level of specificity, he did very well," said Harrison.

"You had to be impressed by his command of the facts and his ability to articulate his positions," she said of Andrews. "But Sen. Lautenberg has never been a public speaker with a great deal of finesse. I don't think we saw anything tonight that we wouldn't have seen in a debate performance of 20 years ago."

Taking this performance -- and I agree Lautenberg lost -- as any evidence that Lautenberg is too old or tired or slipping is just not there.
