Sabrin: Chris Christie "turning a blind eye" to corruption

by: Juan Melli

Sun May 25, 2008 at 03:16:46 PM EDT

Republican Senate candidate Murray Sabrin has some harsh words for US Attorney Chris Christie:
"Chris Christie is turning a blind eye to the rampant corruption throughout New Jersey by Republican public officials and political bosses. There is no way Chris Christie can be elected Governor of New Jersey if he continues with this partisan prosecution. New Jersey voters are not looking for a Republican Prosecutor who only investigates Democrats and allows his Republican buddies to get away with 'stealing elections' as their next Governor. Chris Christie had no problem inserting himself into the United States Senate campaign in 2006 by going after the Democratic nominee. We cannot allow the United States Attorney's office to be politicized, whether by Democrats or Republicans. Unfortunately, Chris Christie's actions, or lack thereof, feeds into the electorate's skepticism of politics. It is a shame to tarnish the history of such a remarkable office."
Sabrin even says he will challenge Christie in a gubernatorial run:
"I will not stand by idly while the U.S. Attorney lets the Republican Primary for the United States Senate be stolen from me. If Chris Christie does not act immediately and this race is stolen from our supporters, I will do everything I can to prevent Chris Christie from being elected Governor of New Jersey next year. If that means I must run myself and remind the voters of the partisan form of justice he performed, then so be it. How can a few reporters without the staff and budget of the U.S. Attorney's office outline the Republican corruption in their book 'Soprano State', yet Chris Christie doesn't seem willing to put these party bosses under oath?"
Sabrin's press release includes a "partial list" with examples of alleged corruption he believes Christie has ignored:
1. The serious allegations of intimidation, corruption, lawlessness, campaign finance violations and other irregularities surrounding Dick Zimmer's campaign for the United States Senate
2. The rampant corruption by Ocean County Republican Boss George Gilmore and the rest of his cronies as has been widely reported in the media (for more info please visit www.trooc.com)
3. Somerset County Republican Boss Dale Florio and the Republican Freeholder Board's involvement with the Somerset County Park Commission scandal (you can visit www.parkscandal.com for more information)
4. New Jersey Republican State Chairman Tom Wilson's involvement with his lobbying partner Robert Stears who plead guilty to stealing over $1 million from the Burlington County Bridge Commission with no one else being charged with any wrongdoing (Chris Christie's office never even interviewed Tom Wilson)

I always thought if Murray Sabrin pulled off an upset in the GOP Primary, he would be the strongest candidate against the Democratic Nominee.

Although I don't agree with him on many issues, he seems principled and he crushed Zimmer and Pennachio in last week's NJN debate.

Sabrin is a tiger--but accusations are unfair (0.00 / 0)
I happen to believe that Murray Sabrin is the strongest of the GOP bunch. You can disagree with some of his politics, but he is principled, intelligent and articulate. He deserves a lot of respect. Heck, I like the guy. But I wouldn't vote for him.

However, in this instance, he has got to lay off the ONLY person in New Jersey who is actually doing something about corruption in public circles.

In many previous comments, I have already listed many Republican officials hauled away by this great and awesome U.S. Attorney. The list grows all the time because someone somewhere is always engaged in corruption in this state.

There are only so many hours in the day and days in a week to get to it all. And as you may have noticed by the flawless 128-0 record of our resident Super Cop, there is a lot of pre-planning and investigating that goes on before anyone is indicted on anything. This process has ensured the undefeated streak and has kept the bad guys that have been captured from wriggling out of their handcuffs.

Right now, our friends in the U.S. Attorneys office have turned their eyes toward the deep culture of corruption surrounding some of the powerful political bigwigs in Bergen County. I say "Amen" to that. We've been waiting forever for it.

So leave Double C alone and let him concentrate on cleaning out the barn in Bergen before they turn their attention elsewhere, thank you.

There is nothing partisan about corruption. Mr. Christie knows that, I assure you. Both parties partake in it and both parties get busted for it. It's that simple.

Amen to Bergen (4.00 / 1)
I agree that it is good that the Bergen folks are being looked at and, hopefully, the guilty will be removed from power and pay for their crimes.

But, again, just because Christie is doing "something about corruption" doesn't mean he is not engaging in it himself.

We have cataloged countless instances of misuse of authority, odd lack of prosecutions, insertions into partisan political races and other issues with the US Attorney's office.

I will note again that Rudy Giuliani and Eliot Spitzer were both known as tough nosed prosecutors who were the only ones going after corruption as well, but both have also been implicated in wrongdoings both professional and personal.

The fact that someone puts out a few fires does not preclude the possibility that they are setting them as well.  Our position on Christie is that he has done a lot of good, but has also done a lot of harm.

The evidence is out there, and as you can see with Sabrin and some other Republicans and non-partisans, it is not only there for the partisan eye to see.

No one is happier that the barn is being cleaned of corrupt Dems in Bergen than the honest Dems here.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

How much money did Chris Christie donate to Bush/Cheney '2000 (0.00 / 0)
$400,000 or so? and then he becomes US Attorney - And the politicians he sets up are mostly not ones he catches in the act, but he actually sets them up.

It all seems a little hypocritical.

Don't insult our intelligence by claiming the corrupt were 'set-up'.
Please.
