P-Inky Endorses Andrews

by: Jay Lassiter

Sun May 25, 2008 at 10:14:48 AM EDT

Is this the beginning of a trend?

Philadelphia Enquirer:

Rob Andrews has built a solid record in the House as a thoughtful legislator, and he would bring a fresh approach to the challenges facing New Jersey. For the Democratic nomination for Senate, The Inquirer endorses ROBERT E. ANDREWS

(T)his Editorial Board sees healthy competition. Lautenberg doesn't own this seat. Incumbent or no, Andrews is a highly qualified candidate.

For those of you who aren't feeling intractable (we've all been there) maybe it's time for a second look at both candidates?

But ... (4.00 / 2)
I don't think anyone on BJ has a question about whether Rob has a good record as a Congressman.  That's never been the issue outside of his insane position at the beginning of the Iraq War and his continued belief that he was right at the time given what he knew.

But the fact is that Lautenberg has also been an excellent legislator, and replacing him with Rob doesn't really get us anything but a younger guy from South Jersey.

The long and the short of it is that Rob would make a good if not excellent Senator, but he hasn't made the case -- and may not be able to make the case -- that he would be a better Senator than Lautenberg.

And unless we will get a better Senator, there's no reason to kick out the incumbent.

How good is good? (0.00 / 0)
He's energetic, which is good. And his voting record would be fine in the 5th. But Andrew's voting record is worse than we should expect from his district.

Historic changes (2.00 / 1)
This country is going to experience and electoral tsunami in November. Doesn't New Jersey deserve a new, young, fresh face to match the new and  young President?

There simply is no future with Lautenberg. The guy is just hangin on and this state deserves better.

In addition I have been turned off with his aloof attitude towards the voters and especially his decision to completely ignore South Jersey.

Does he think the voters owe him something?

There simply is no upside with Lautenberg.

Ridiculous and wrong (2.00 / 1)

I wish I understood this great South Jersey bonding thing that causes otherwise reasonable people to pillage a Senator who has been a consistent progressive voice in the Senate.    Andrews has been a less progressive voice (says third-party progressive groups).  Flag-burning amendment, anyone?

If Andrews was really progressive, he would have signed on with Obama last year.   As one of the few BJ posters who were pro-Obama from the beginning, I find it hilarious how the whole South Jersey contingent that was pro-Clinton is now trying to argue that Andrews is the "Obama" candidate in this race.

Obama's campaign has never been about being new, young, and fresh.   If that is what Andrews' campaign thinks it is about, it reflects superficial thinking and a lack of real issues in this race.

It's not change for the sake of change.  It's the new type of politics that [Obama's] change would represent that is the core of the Obama campaign.

Obama? (0.00 / 0)
..and Obama has what to do withthe Senate race?

This race is about an arrogant lazy man who thinks he is owed a seat in the Senate and  believes that he is above questioning.

As I stated at other times. Who the hell is Frank Lautenberg and why should I have to kiss the ground he walks on?

He refuses to debate, he refuses to get out with the voters , and he gets indignant when someone questions him.

I need Frank Lautenberg? Think again Frank!

He has not worked for my vote and he will not get it.

Obama? He will be my candiate as well as yours. I did not support him but he certainly worked like hell to get where he is.

No candidate will ever get my vote who takes me for granted.

Your Words, not Mine (4.00 / 1)
"Doesn't New Jersey deserve a new, young, fresh face to match the new and  young President?"

You [and the Andrews campaign] are the ones who keep bringing Obama into this.

"No candidate will ever get my vote who takes me for granted."

Somehow, I'd rather have a Senator whose votes improve this country rather than one who is good at campaigning.   Andrews support of the war has made this country and this generation pay a huge cost.

Obama comment (1.00 / 1)
You happened to be the first one to bring up Obaba.

I don't care if Lautenberg is good or bad at campaigning, but I do care that he has decided to take the voters of New Jersey for granted and hide out during the campaign.

My question from the beginning is Why?

Too old to campaign every day or too arrogant be out and about throughout the whole state?

Let's not misrepresent the facts here. (0.00 / 0)
When you wrote "Doesn't New Jersey deserve a new, young, fresh face to match the new and  young President?"

which presidential candidate were you referring to?   The only young one is Obama.   So unless John McCain just visited the fountain of youth, your assertion:

"You happened to be the first one to bring up Obaba."

is completely wrong.
