There's been a lot of talk in the blogosphere about one in particular.

Aside from any deliberate confusion, one issue is that if a group's metric of success is only registering new voters, they might not care how much confusion they create amongst registered voters.

This sounds like classic voter suppression.

We need federal legislation making it a truly SERIOUS crime to screw with the electoral process.  

I'm talking 25 years no parole for a first offense and life if you're stupid enough to repeat it.

What kinds of voters will be confused or intimidated or dissuaded from "going to all that bother".    Think about those demographics and who they would likely support.  

Who would benefit?

There's a fascinating book called "How to Rig An Election" by Allen Raymond.   He's actually from NJ.

Mr Raymond was a fairly high level Republican operative who was convicted of systematically jamming the lines of the NH democratic party on election day.

The books is actually well written and he goes into great detail about the kinds of crap these people routinely pull.  

Note: I borrowed the book from the library as I certainly wouldn't wish to enrich Mr Raymond any more than necessary.

In any event, I believe these kinds of crimes are not mere "shenanigans" or "hardball politics"; I see this stuff as a direct assault on our democracy.   This is the kind of thing we would go to war over if a foreign power or "terrorists" tried it.   (Remember Bush's line "they hate our freedoms"...damn, that seems to be true of the whole Bush administration!!!)

Screwing around with the electoral process is treason and should be treated as such.

The same organization that was accused of misleading robo-calls and mailings in recent primary states. I received one of the mailings about a week ago.   It listed my old address and stated that state law requires me to update my registration records.  Somewhat confusing, since I had no trouble voting in the primary.  Although I did move recently, Mercer County updates your voter registration information if you submit a change of address notice to the post office (I found that out when I tried to notify them that I'd moved and my new address was already on file).
