Junior calling the kettle black

by: Juan Melli

Tue Jan 31, 2006 at 04:36:51 PM EST

From the Inside Edge:
Tom Kean's U.S. Senate campaign took a shot at the Democratic incumbent for voting against the confirmation of Samuel Alito as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court: "Today, Bob Menendez sent his message loud and clear -- partisanship is more important than the people of New Jersey. Instead of fighting for Judge Alito, he chose to embrace the political bitterness that is dividing America." But on the same day, Kean voted against the confirmation of Zulima Farber as Attorney General of New Jersey.

So Junior is a hypocrite (0.00 / 0)
Surprise, surprise.

Senator Menendez received phne calls and other messages on the Alito nomination that, at last count, ran around ten to one against Alito and for a filibuster.  Senator Menendez, undecided about Alito, accepted the urging of his constituents and voted against Alito.  Junior's position would therefore be, I guess, that were he governor, he would ignore his constituents and do what he wanted.

Yeah, that sounds about right.  Like a lot of other folks, they think they get elected as though they were being given a private enterprise and serving no one.

That's a little disingenuous... (0.00 / 0)
It's the squeaky wheel getting the grease. Every poll has New Jersey residents favoring the Alito confirmation by 53 to 28 or something along those lines.
You can say Senator Menendez ingored those constituents who didn't call him.
I know you will say the poll numbers are suspect. Personally, I doubt any court will overturn the Roe decision, so I don't have a problem with Alito.
But my reasons for support are basically that prominent democrats who ACTUALLY worked with him came out in support and vouched for his fairness.

As for the Farber confirmation, I can see where one would be troubled by 4 bench warrants for failure to appear. With her experience she can't claim ignorance of the law (like my teenage son did when he had a warrant out) and that record appears to me like she kind of thinks she's 'above the law'. But I did find it encouraging that already she is talking of chasing down the mystery $2000 to Assemblyman Cryan in Union, so maybe that traffic thing was an oversight.

Point is, I probably would have supported her confirmation, but I can see where people have reason not to...

I can play that game (0.00 / 0)
It's the squeaky wheel getting the grease. Every poll has New Jersey residents favoring the Farber confirmation by __ to __  (who knows?) or something along those lines.
You can say Senator Kean Jr ingored those constituents who didn't call him.
I know you will say the poll numbers are suspect. Personally, I doubt the bench warrants will have any effect on her professional duties, so I don't have a problem with Farber.

As for the Alito confirmation, I can see where one would be troubled by his refusal to respect stare decisis and with statements he has made on women's rights. With his experience he can't claim that he was just "doing his job" and his views on a unitary executive appears to me like he kind of thinks the President is 'above the law'.

Good play! (0.00 / 0)
I like that!

Since those statements can be easily manipulated to apply to both politicians (as you've just proven), they seem to back up my initial thought, that one is no better than the other.
