New Jersey should have Election Day Registration

by: Hopeful

Wed May 07, 2008 at 10:32:57 AM EDT

One of the great stories out of this last week was the success of one stop registration and voting in North Carolina.  Over 300,000 people had voted even before election day.  Many were able to vote only because they were allowed to register at the last minute.  The fact is that although people who read blogs like Blue Jersey are bound to be registered, many people only pay attention just as the election approaches -- that includes the media, which often covers local elections only in the last week.

There's no reason a citizen who simply lacks a bureaucratic form should be denied his fundamental right to vote under the New Jersey Constitution:

3.  (a)  Every citizen of the United States, of the age of 18 years, who shall have been a resident of this State and of the county in which he claims his vote 30 days, next before the election, shall be entitled to vote for all officers that now are or hereafter may be elective by the people, and upon all questions which may be submitted to a vote of the people;

This is no abstract concern.  History shows that states with Election Day Registration have an average turnout 12% higher than other states.  Let's help those people vote.

Here's a tip (4.00 / 3)
May 13 is the last day you can register for the June 3 Primary Election.

Of Course, You're Right; But... (4.00 / 1)
...incumbents don't really want to make it easy for new people to vote.   They like the status quo.

It's going to take a grass roots movement to force change.   That's the only way it ever happens.

That's why Joe Ferriero is so terrified of the "Real Bergen Democrats".

We need a movement that is state wide to promote real/profound yes, radical, progressive changes.

Political clubs and blogs are cool and fun; they are not movements.

not gonna happen (4.00 / 2)
I talked with public advocate Richard Chen about this and he said that there is very little chance this  will happen in new jersey because both political parties do not want it. They prefer knowing before hand the demography and registered voters.

In other words... (4.00 / 1)
....they care more about maintaining their own power than they do about democracy/ empowering the people.

Now why doesn't that surprise me.

Until things like this become VOTING ISSUES; they will never happen.

That means we, yes WE, need to form a movement to raise a whole new crop of candidates.

Any and every candidate (of both parties) who can't get on board with such an obvious and fundamental reform as this deserves to be primaried out of office.

Isn't this what you're mad at Rob Andrews for doing?  If he publicly declared support for same-day voting, would you reconsider?
