A Legacy Day for Progressivism in New Jersey

by: Jay Lassiter

Fri May 02, 2008 at 10:27:56 PM EDT

Proud of our Governor.

Proud of our Legislature.

And most of all proud of what we fight for all the time. So to pull off a win that's long overdue, it's a very sweet feeling. It's hard to remember a day this happy in Trenton.

Thanks to the Andrews Campaign (0.00 / 0)
.... who gave me a loooong lunch hour in the middle of a dizzying campaign cuz they know how important this victory was: to me personally and to the progressive community in New Jersey.

Yesterday was historic and very very special.  So i appreciate a few hours of latitude to be "statehouse jay" instead if "campaign guy."

On that note...
BACK TO THE STUMP!

It's up to 2/3 pay, not 1/2. Great video, Jay.

This Is Another Pearl On What Needs To Be.... (0.00 / 0)
...a very long and lovely necklace.

There is so so so much to be done...and we don't have the luxury of waiting twelve, and more, years for common sense and common decency to dominate our legislature.

There's no good reason there can't be at least a couple of dozen bills of this stature passing in each session from here on in.

Thanks for the video Jay!

why is this a legacy day? (0.00 / 0)
It's great that paid family leave finally got passed and signed, but let's not forget that this legislation is a shell of its former self.

Legislatures with Democratic majorities as large as ours should never have been as timid as they have proven themselves to be on this issue, especially with a bill that was not going to cost a single taxpayer a single dollar.

Can someone name me a single Democratic Assemblyperson whose seat would have been in jeopardy next year if they had voted for twelve weeks instead of six as well as all of the other excemptions?

I have a hard time feeling proud of a Governor and a Legislature that provide the bare minimum of governance in a political environment that many Democratic electeds throughout the country would kill to have.

Yesterday was a good day by Trentonian standards, but nobody there should break their arm patting themselves on the back, although they could probably afford to because they probably have better health insurance than the rest of us.

Historic Day (0.00 / 0)
Since I could not be there in person I greatly appreciate the coverage.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, who fought for this can be proud.

History occured on our watch!

I'm very glad this is now law. Having this covered one way or another is a big step forward. But I don't think having employers cover the costs is the way it should have been done.

Like health insurance, this is one more cost that should be picked up by the state, but it's easier to offload the expense to businesses than to raise taxes.

When we voter/taxpayers become more willing to put our money where our moths are, we'll see less outsourcing and more successful small businesses.

the fight isn't over (0.00 / 0)
The battle goes on, but this is a huge score any way you slice it.

p.s. this program isn't covered by business OR the state: it's fully worker funded to the tune of ~30/year.
