High Stakes Politics

OK, I know that he's not gonna win, but is this the kind of image a libertarian fiscal conservative like Murray Sabrin wants to project:

Sabrin, who is running in the Republican primary for the seat held by incumbent Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg, is using the proceeds from an hour-long online fund-raiser this afternoon to bet it all on Cowboy Cal in tomorrow's Kentucky Derby.

Yes, that's right -- he's using federal campaign funds to bet on the horses. "At 20-1, if we can raise just $25,000 online during this money bomb and Cowboy Cal wins the Kentucky Derby, we will have enough money to win the primary," Sabrin reasoned in a campaign statement.

Can he DO that? (0.00 / 0)
Is that LEGAL?

I love the chutzpah, but ... there's gotta be a law against betting campaign funds on a pony.

Cue Damon Runyon, someone ...

If it's legal (0.00 / 0)
it's stupid.  A 20-1?  The twins could outrun that nag!

Indeed (0.00 / 0)
Cowboy Cal is 20-1.  So are a lot of other horses.  Wonder if Murray knows something the handicappers don't.  If Cal wins, or even places or shows, we have some re-thinking to do about Jersey politics.

BTW - Big Brown is the 3-1 favorite.  But that's no fun.  Ya get 20 cents on a 2 bill bet.

If I had to pick a 20-1, it would be Eight Belles.  Just because she's a filly.  But I'd probably lose my 2 bucks.

And I know about losin' the ones your supposed to win.

"I know about losin' the ones your supposed to win."

That should be Sabrin's campaign slogan.

At least Smarty won 2 (big ones) out of 3.

I can't even think of what the odds might be on Murray might be

I think that he would have received more contributions if he would have let the contributor pick the horse.

If Sabrin doesn't wind up in jail, I might have to consider doing something like this if I decide to try to raise money for my Council race.

But instead of betting on the ponies, maybe I'll host a Texas Hold'em Tournament.

More on Murray (0.00 / 0)

I didn't know much on Sabrin before this primary.  Ok, I didn't know anything.

Here's a article with a recap of his policies and actions:
