No Joy in Hudson

by: Thurman Hart

Wed Apr 30, 2008 at 09:10:59 PM EDT

I welcome the news that Javier Inclan has resigned with no joy at all.  I do find it satisfying to know that he will face at least this minimal consequence of his actions, but it is far, far better treatment than he deserves.  As such, it is badly overdue.

Imagine that you are a poor man or woman in Honduras.  Imagine that your daughter packs everything she owns into a bundle of rags and heads out of town for the United States.  At fourteen, she is hardly a woman, but she is more than a girl and she deserves more than an itinerant farm-hand husband will ever provide. Vaya con Dios, mija!

Three years later, she finds her way back to your village.  Yes, she made it to the United States - almost all the way to New York.  But then the people that helped bring her so far beat her, locked her in an apartment, and told her she had to work in their bar.  She learned to drink and smile when strange men ran their hands over her body.  As one of the heffes said, "A body can make some money."  But what of the soul?

But the United States would not let such things happen unavenged?  What happened to those responsible?  Oh, some went to jail for a while.  One man, a very powerful man in the Governor's office, lost his job.  Well, actually, he resigned his job after the Governor told everyone what a brave, courageous man he was!

How would you feel?  Is this justice?

Javier Inclan still has his public pension and he still has the Rolodex he carried out of his office today (or will carry out - he still has a job until May 15).  If he faces no charges at either the state or federal level; then he's gotten off pretty lightly for making a business plan out of the bribe-passing that won Nidia Davila-Colon three years in prison.  Not a bad deal for what could most generously be called "a well-timed attack of conscience".

There are wounds in this community - and they reach far from tiny Guttenberg.  The state took over Jersey City schools because of patronage and an inability to conduct its business to a minimal standard.  What happens when it is the entire town?  Will the state take over the city government?  More to the point, will anything less make a difference?

There is no joy in Hudson County tonight, but there is a grim satisfaction.  But the point of justice is to make whole someone who has been injured.  We are still well short of that.

Addendum I want to thank everyone who stayed with me in not letting this story get swept out with the trash.  New Jersey can be a better place - this is just a tiny, tiny step towards turning in the right direction.

Congratulations (2.00 / 1)
My dear Thurman, perhaps you can now rest.  Or even better, now that you proudly claim credit for destroying a man's reputation based on things you read but had no inside knowledge of, perhaps you can muster your self-proclaimed courage and schedule a face-to-face meeting with Javier before his last day and realize the man he really is instead of believing all the trash and then hyping it up and propagating it in adulterated form.  Sleep well.  Then get a life!

Re: (4.00 / 2)
This was based on Inclan's own testimony under oath. No inside knowledge was needed. But if you know something we don't, please share.

I do sleep well (4.00 / 3)
If you can point to anything I've said that was untrue, please do.  I made sure that I commented only on sworn testimony.

Why should I disbelieve "all the trash" that Javier Inclan swore was true about himself in court?  Are you saying that he merely lied in order to help convict David and Anna della Donna?  Somehow that doesn't convince me he should hold a Deputy CoS job.

As for a life - I have a very good one.  I treasure it.  Part of that life is working to leave a better community, country, and planet for my kids.  This is part of that effort.

You, on the other hand, should change your ID.  It's disgraceful for you to defend the corrupt under that title.

I am not defending the corrupt, sir. I am simply defending accuracy.  It was not bagfuls of money as some press accounts have written. If you read all, you'd see that the real issue centered around a single envelope. You would also see that once Anna DD insinuated that it contained cash, Inclan told her in no uncertain terms to give it back.  Did he follow up? I guess not.  Was that right? Not really, but worth losing a job over?

The artificial and dramatic connection you have made between Inclan and human traffickers is ridiculous!  Even the mayor most likely didn't know about Medrano or the Feds would have gone for that charge.  So to hold Inclan accountable for the envelope, fine.  To hold him accountable for the actions of Medrano is a lame stretch upon which you have based your writings.
As for "inside information", I have none, although I have met and worked with Inclan and found him to be a stand-up guy.
But someone had to speak up, as you have been hell-bent on destroying a career by playing "six degrees of Luisa Medrano" because it's fun and dramatic to write about.   I won't write again.  My real name is Paul. Does it matter? You don't know me.

You must be accurate to "defend accuracy" (0.00 / 0)
You are, indeed, defending the corrupt.  Inclan's job was to count money coming in and out of the Guttenberg Dems.  He testified that he did not do this.  That is not only an ethical violation, but a legal one as well.

I have been very careful about what I have written.  I have never said Inclan knew what Medrano was doing - in fact, almost every time I wrote, I stipulated that he most likely did not.  The fact was that he didn't care.  He didn't care what Medrano or the della Donnas were doing.  He was only worried about his career.

That - putting career over the law - is an act of corruption.  He was given a trust by the people and he broke it.  It's that simple.

I don't care what your name is, but if you are willing to overlook corruption and defend it because you "met and worked" with the corrupt person - then you don't deserve to use the title "TrueDem".

If you want to accuse me of inaccuracies, go back and find specific instances and I'll show you the news reports they came from.  Otherwise, stop grandstanding.

Wow. (4.00 / 2)
What part of the phrase "sworn testimony" is so tough to grok?

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

Seriously, "TrueDem" Please Do Tell Us... (0.00 / 0)
...whatever you know of any "inside information" that might be exculpatory for Mr Inclan or that conflicts with his own sworn testimony?

Further, your somehow blaming, or holding Thurman accountable, in any way, for Inclan's being forced to resign is absurd.

To whatever extent Thurman or anyone anywhere (including me) urged Corzine to fire your friend; I say that was and remains a righteous exercise.

I would take it a notch further and suggest that if it isn't against the law to be a bagman   transferring funds for illicit purposes; it should be.

And if it is illegal, Mr Inclan should be prosecuted....and if he is found guilty, he shouldn't get any pension.

I'm still very suspicious as to why the governor didn't fire Inclan as soon as it was clear that he was a bagman in this ugly dirty business.  There's something fishy going on here.

TruDem, I hope you feel as much sympathy for the young women, whose lives have been horribly destroyed in this case, as you do for your friend Inclan.

I'd love to see a federal taskforce really aggressively get to the bottom of all the corruption in Essex, Bergen and Hudson Counties.   I bet such an effort would result in at least 500 convictions.

Of course, Chris Christie isn't about to do that.   Eh?

Connection with Sex Slavery (4.00 / 1)

I don't know whether Javier knew about the sex slavery ring or not.  But given that he turned a blind eye to an illegal activity which was later revealed to be sex slavery means that he can't remain in a senior position in the government.   It's that simple.   It's a tough break for him, but that's the problem when you take the risk of looking the other way.

Personally, I'm astonished how long it took the Governor to realize what he had to do.

never has realized - at least not publicly.
