by: Jeff Gardner

Sat Jan 28, 2006 at 03:38:14 PM EST

The progressive caucus of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee met today in Piscataway to discuss issues, events and strategies for effecting progressive change in New Jersey, the nation, and the world.

Over 40 leaders from progressive groups around the state, including NJ for Democracy, Progressive Democrats of New Jersey, Garden State Equality, and other progressive individuals were joined by the Democratic State Committee's Richard McGrath, who addressed the caucus on the their shared vision for the state party.

The caucus then set about forming working groups to create a progressive platform on a series of issues of importance to NJ's progressive community.

"NJ Democratic State Committee – Progressive Caucus
Statewide Meeting
January 28, 2006

Details of the meeting are provided in the minutes issued separately and separate emails were sent for organizing the committees and the Issues Agenda groups.

SUMMARY

Approximately 50 people attended and many more expressed interest but were unable to attend. Those interested will be kept informed of Caucus progress and given an opportunity to contribute in the future.
Richard McGrath from the NJ DSC, Michael Ray from the California DSC Progressive Caucus and Dan Benson, former candidate for General Assembly in the 14th Legislative District gave short talks.
Mr McGrath pointed out that the DSC is in transition after the Corzine Gubernatorial campaign and that they are very interested in working with the progressive grass roots.

The meeting consisted of two parts. The first included discussions on the definition of the Caucus and how it will interact with the DSC. After a break, the meeting began defining a Progressive Caucus Issues Agenda to be presented to the DSC at the annual convention in June 2006.

A number of committees, working groups and language groups were defined and staffed with initial volunteers. Plans for the next regional meetings were discussed.

It became apparent that some representatives from each section of the state are needed to provide continuity and direction to the Caucus in the future. As the committees begin work and prepare for the regional meetings and Convention, it is expected that an overall steering committee will form. An initial cadre of this committee will be started with those who volunteered at the Piscataway meeting."
