Doug Palmer: "cities are where it's at"

by: Juan Melli

Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 09:22:19 PM EDT

The Drum Major Institute just posted an interview with Trenton mayor Doug Palmer, their latest from the MayorTV series -- an effort to draw attention to urban issues during the presidential election. Palmer specifically touts the "Live Where You Work" program which provides low-interest mortgages as incentive for people to buy homes in urban areas (for now, Trenton and Jersey City) where they work. I won't make the obvious quip about his police director Joseph Santiago not living where he works.

The problem (0.00 / 0)
is that people who work in Jersey City can't afford to live here.  It isn't the interest rates that's the problem, it's the property value and the property taxes.

Wow.  Palmer's idea is great - except for that part where it doesn't.

The problem with Trenton (0.00 / 0)
is that no one with school-aged children or a healthy respect for their own longevity would be caught dead (ooops!) living there if they had the wherewithal to be elsewhere. And we have Mayor Doug of Hunterdon Co.'s leadership to thank for this state of affairs. Nothing at all open downtown after 5 pm, no place to shop for virtually anything within the city limits, a handful of brave restaurants and bars hanging on, Chambersburg virtually finished, oh it's been a delight living there these past five years.  I could go on ... but the long and the short of it is, the City of Trenton's leadership is exhausted and it's time for change.
