When was the last time Lautenberg was in your part of N.J.?

by: Martin

Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 06:41:57 PM EDT

First, to lay it out on the table, I support Andrews for senate and think that he should be our nominee come November. Before coming to that decision, however, I supported Lautenberg (and will do so if he is the nominee) and did as much research on him as I could. What I found in that time and subsequently is that Lautenberg doesn?t spend much time in New Jersey, doesn?t do much work for local Democratic committees and the state party, and hasn?t visited many counties in the state for quite some time, let alone talk to the voters in these counties about their concerns.

The following list represents the last-known appearance by Lautenberg in every county in the state. I used a variety of sources, all electronic, to compile it, ranging from Lautenberg?s own press releases to his own senate gallery to basic google search results to my own personal knowledge of his work. I encourage others who have knowledge of when and where Lautenberg visited these counties and towns in those counties to post such information; if your local or county Democratic committee has met with Lautenberg or he has worked with you recently, please do post such information. In short, I?m not trying to be dishonest towards Lautenberg in the least in the information below.

If you don?t feel like reading further, then let me summarize: according to my research, Lautenberg hasn?t been to a dozen or so N.J. counties, most South Jersey and Republican-leaning ones, in months, if not years; he only makes quick media appearances (Monmouth, Ocean) in other counties; and spends the majority of his time in the state in Essex, Hudson, and Bergen counties, if he is in the state at all.

Martin :: When was the last time Lautenberg was in your part of N.J.?

Middlesex County: Breakfast/Fundraiser (March/April 2008); corrected per Babs below
Monmouth County: Gunner Island Preservation (November 2007); media appearance
Morris County: Morris County Democrats Picnic (Sept. 2006); campaigning for Menendez
Ocean County: Warren Grove (May 2007); media appearance (with Saxton)
Passaic County: Prosecutor?s Office funding announcement (March 2008); media appearance
Salem County: unknown
Somerset County: unknown
Sussex County: unknown; was active for Highlands Act (2004)  in Sussex Co.
Union County: fundraiser (April 2008)
Warren County: unknown

Lautenberg, by published accounts, doesn?t even live in the state of New Jersey

many Democratic insiders say it is common knowledge that when the New Jersey Senator isn't in Washington, is real residence is at the Park Avenue apartment of his wife, Bonnie Englebardt, whom he married in 2001

This is because Lautenberg owns a vacation home in Martha?s Vineyard, Mass., where he divides time between there and the New York apartment of his wife. One wonders whether the Cliffside Park home in Bergen County is even really occupied. When pressed by the North Jersey Herald
about Lautenberg?s residency, his campaign provided a non-response:

His chief of staff, Dan Katz, would not say how much time Lautenberg spends at the New York apartment.

I?m not sure how a U.S. senator is supposed to be in touch with the concerns and issues of his constituency if he (most likely) doesn?t live in the state he represents, nor does he talk with his constituents in many New Jersey counties. How, for example, would Lautenberg know about the rising price of peaches in Salem County or the rejection of school budgets in Hunterdon County if he hasn?t been in those parts of the state for months, if not years?

There?s a narrative that?s building with Lautenberg, and it may be an accurate one: Lautenberg is a senator who has done a decent job but a) isn?t active within the state b) hasn?t done much for local candidates and c)  is only coasting along for this possible final term, with no real roots in the state. In my town, Haddonfield, for example, I couldn?t tell you if Lautenberg has ever visited, met with the town?s Democratic committee, or done any campaigning for a CC Democrat ? I?ve never heard of such a thing.

Compare Lautenberg?s rather inactive schedule and disconnect with the state with how active Andrews was on just one day this weekend:

"I started this day with a flea market in Bellmawr, spent time with the students of the Robert Treat Academy in Newark, did a fund-raiser in Somerset, this - and we?re not done," says the congressman on his way to a fund-raiser to fight breast cancer in Deptford.

Andrews will provided this kind of tireless effort every day for the state ? if he is elected senator. Meanwhile, Lautenberg can barely be torn away from his wife?s New York apartment for a day to talk to voters in N.J., much less visit voters in several N.J. counties.

Andrews lives here.. (0.00 / 0)
I believe Andrews is one of the few congressmen that actually commutes everyday from here to DC. He will be much more visible in this state and more responsive as a result.

Just so you know (0.00 / 0)
I have met Senator Lautenberg on three different occasions in the last year in Union County (not counting the fundraiser in April, which I didn't go to). And at every one he has spoken with as many people as possible, and given a good, solid speech in the process. I'd personally like to know where Rob Andrews was in Union County before he decided to run, because I've never seen him here before.

Just a reminder that if you're going to attack a guy on a particular issue, make sure your guy isn't the same way on it.

I've never seen Andrews (0.00 / 0)
But I've seen Lautenberg at least twice in the past two years, and I don't go out to these things too much.

A campaign puff piece. (3.50 / 2)
Hey, we'd like a senator who isn't aloof,  a backbencher, a playboy  or a rich dilletante, which covers Bill, Frank, Bob & Jon to one  extent  or  another. But a lot of us think   that Rush Holt ought to move up. But  Andrews could lock that seat down for 18 years.  If Andrews wants to  do  something really valuable for Jersey,  he can dig in & fight  Norcross instead of  throwing in the  towel.

Martin, there is a lot you don't know if you don't want to know (4.00 / 1)
Senator Lautenberg and his wife were at a breakfast I attended in New Brunswick  (Middlesex County) a couple of weeks ago with Governor Corzine, Dennis Shulman, Asm. and Mrs Chivukula, former Congressman Herb Klein among many others. He was actively speaking with the attendees.

I've also seen and spoken with Congressman Andrews at a couple of Hillary events this year.

C'mon quit with the obvious campaign puffery.

Compare the actual records of each and what each has done.

Lautenberg was at Rutgers a few weekends ago (0.00 / 0)
He made an appearance at Rutgers Dance Marathon in New Brunswick two weekends three weekends ago.  It wasn't really a campaign stump, more a showing of solidarity to our huge charity event involving raising money for cancer, but I spoke with him for a few minutes and gave him support.

Interesting how Juan and Jay support opposite candidates in this race!

Oh, also... (0.00 / 0)
When was the last time Menendez was in each county, since you opened the question up Martin?

he was in monmouth last month (4.00 / 1)
He was in Monmouth last month and saw him in Middlesex a few months ago - If we are determining who should be our U.S. Senator is who travels more around to 'Democratic Organizations' or who gets things done in DC - I'm casting my vote for the person who gets things done in DC - Frank Lautenberg has a record of over 24 years of serving the people of New Jersey with integrity and honor - He has a great record and has been right on nearly every issue - When others wouldn't challenge Cheney's Halliburton contracts, Lautenberg called him out for being the chickenhawk he is. I don't want the guy who stood behind Bush at the Iraq War Resolution signing and who was the Bush Administration's spokesperson for selling the war to Democrats and who was the only Democrat in the entire NJ delegation who recently voted to fund the war when every other Democratic congressmember didn't.

One of the things that always annoyed me about Andrews is that he stuck is nose were it didn't belong - campaigning in the 2006 mayoral race in Bayonne for Joe Doria, in the 2002 Newark Mayoral race for Sharpe James, the 2006 District 13 primary for Albio Sires (poor Rob now doesent have the support of Sires or Vas) He continued to campaign for candidates who were nowhere near is district....

Now Andrews is running a campaign on 'change' - He sounds like Barack Obama the way hes going to 'defeat the special interests' - It bothers me that he uses the same talking points of a presidential candidate whom he is not even supporting (he is a hillary supporter) and all while at the same time he has been apart of the establishment DC congress for 18 years!

Now he wants open primaries after not saying a single word in over 18 years? After not saying anything in 1997 or even this year when he had a primary challenge for his house seat early on?

Rob Andrews has run such a hyproctical, phony campaign in his 1 week on the trail. You don't throw an incumbent out unless there is something wrong with him, not for your own political gain...Meanwhile New Jersey has been blessed to have Frank Lautenberg represent them and we will be blessed to have him as our senator for another 6 or 12 or however many years.

Some "research" (3.33 / 3)
If you don't feel like reading further, then let me summarize: according to my research,
It looks liek you researched only enough to provide a thoroughly false impression.

I actually don't know (0.00 / 0)
when the last time Lautenberg was in Jersey City.  Should we play this game with Andrews as well?  Somehow, I don't think he'd do much better.

In Fairness (0.00 / 0)
In fairness, while I think Martin's post is obviously a one-sided, incomplete version, of course Andrews wouldn't do much better.  He doesn't represent the whole state.  Frank does.  There is reason for Lautenberg to travel to every county because they're all part of his "district".

Now if someone could break down Andrews' appearances in his own district, that could be comparable.

I'm not taking sides, just saying..
