The Kate Chronicles, Part II: Whitman Wallows in the Mud

by: Scott Weingart

Thu Apr 17, 2008 at 10:30:07 AM EDT

In a press release yesterday, NJ-07 Republican candidate Kate Whitman slimed one of her primary opponents, State Senator Leonard Lance. Whitman accused Lance of being "unethical" for taking "thousands of dollars" in "pay to play money" from federal and state lobbyists.

Isn't this the same person whose mother recently complained about dirty campaigning in the Republican presidential primary?

In any event, Kate Whitman is in no position to go after the way other candidates are funding their campaigns. Her April filing report revealed that Whitman took another $8,000 from two wealthy Republican families who appear to be funneling campaign contributions through their children in order to evade contribution limits.

Kate Did Good..... (0.00 / 0)
.....don't get me wrong, she should lose the election; (Of course, I'm assuming that her Democratic opponent is for criminalizing bribery.) but I see it as a victory for reform anytime anyone points out that pay to play is a negative and something that may be legal but is also, essentially, unethical.

BOTH parties have to cut this shitty practice out of their playbook.

The best way to do it would be to actually make it a crime to take a bribe in the form of a "contribution".

No one believes that this money is given unconditionally or at random.

Public financing, like they already have in ARIZONA (of all places!) would totally revolutionize politics in NJ and result in laws that actually served the PEOPLE of New Jersey.......instead of laws that serve up the people's money to all manner of corrupt contractors etc.

This isn't complicated folks.

Indeed -- too bad she wasn't around when mommy dearest was doing it. (0.00 / 0)
Too bad Kate was busy at college boozing it up and throwing beer cans at police officers (google that), otherwise she could have prevented mommy dearest's from that same exact unethical pay-to-play behavoir.  Who could forget such scandals as Gov. Christie's awarding an E-Z pass contract to big Republican contributors  or the DMV emmissions testing contract to party donors.  Both contracts ended up costing taxpayers hundreds of millions and were boondoggles.

Got one question (4.00 / 1)
Did Lance take thousands of dollars in Pay to Play money from lobbyists and help them get contracts in return?

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
