Why Dennis Shulman Can and Will Take the Fifth

by: Shulman for Congress

Is the 5th winnable?

Of course it is, with the right candidate -- and here's why we believe that candidate is Dennis Shulman.

Dennis only began to explore a race for Congress in September, 2007, and announced his decision to run two months later.

The thinking is this -- Shulman's background as psychologist, educator, author, and rabbi who would be the first blind Member of Congress in generations-gives him natural fundraising constituencies and strong press appeal.

Shulman for Congress :: Why Dennis Shulman Can and Will Take the Fifth
He has quickly assembled a veteran campaign team and has already established a strong fundraising network -- indeed, Dennis outraised Garrett in Q4 and will be reporting strong money raised and next week, most importantly, cash on hand figures for Q1.

To beat Garrett, you need a candidate who can attract the free media and the funds necessary to educate a district where Garrett is not well known.  The conventional wisdom for races in which a challenger takes on an incumbent is that the race is solely about "firing" the incumbent.  While we plan to make that case, we also benefit from the instinctive reasons to "hire Shulman."  Dennis's experience, unique background, and vibrant personality all allow him to stand out.

His unusual candidate profile will be of great benefit, especially during the inevitable lull when the thrill of Super Tuesday, the surprising Senatorial primary, etc... have passed.

We don't believe that Wolfe or Aronsohn lost because they or their message was rejected by the key swing voters, nor that Garrett benefited from any particularly strong incumbent or partisan edge -- rather, this is a district where "the tie goes to the Republican," and despite impressive efforts, neither Wolfe nor Aronsohn quite cut through enough to overcome that weak inertial edge... although each reduced the margin from their predecessor and laid ther groundwork for the DCCC and others to see this race as winnable.

Additionally, demographic trends from increased diversity in the Bergen 2/3rds of the district to new residents in Passaic, Sussex, and Warren straining under rising energy costs, a tumultuous housing market, and environmental problems make this district increasingly winnable, above and beyond convincing "Roukema Republicans" that Garrett's extreme views are neither reasonable nor representative.

Dennis can get this done -- especially with your help.  He's already a Blue America candidate, and he's looking forward to working with the Blue Jersey community throughout the year.

My guess is that the message never registered with enough swing voters, so there was no tie to go to Garrett or anyoen else.

To me, your key point is

Shulman's background as psychologist, educator, author, and rabbi who would be the first blind Member of Congress in generations-gives him natural fundraising constituencies and strong press appeal.
The question is, given the higher profile the district has now achieved, will any good Democrat be able to get her/his message out, or will you have a substantial advantage in that regard.
