  • Santorum gets a verbal smackdown from Menendez for threatening NJ.

  • Wal-Mart claims that by setting up a new 220,000 square foot super-store in an ecologically-sensitive part of rural Salem County, they will help protect the watershed, which is home to 7 endangered species, including the Bald Eagle. Also, black is white. Up is down. Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia.

  • A study finds that for the third year in a row, New Jersey is the most expensive state for low-income residents to rent in. According to the study, "a household's wage earner must earn $20.87 hourly -- or $43,419 annually -- to afford a two-bedroom apartment." Half of New Jerseyans earn less than $33,440/year.

  • Corzine's office pressured UMDNJ's president John Petillo to step down.

  • There are nine candidates for NJ for Democracy's executive board. Check out their bios and applications.

  • Rep. Scott Garrett is being challenged from both the left and right. On the right from Republican Michael Cino who is challenging Garrett in the primary and on the left from Democrat Paul Aronsohn.

Anyone who is to the right of Garrett... (0.00 / 0)
Seems to me to be a candidate for being from another planet.

Perhaps, what should be pointed out about Garrett is that largely, in his own district, he is a man of mystery who visits the district only when he needs votes and money. Witness the delay in his returning to view the flood damage in Warren County. As our British bretheren would say:

    "He just couldn't be arsed"

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

    Michael Cino (0.00 / 0)
Is this the same guy who was a Democratic Committeeman in 2000 who made a big flap by criticizing Jon Corzine's clumsy attempts at "Italian-American jokes"? Who subsequently ran in CD5 as an independent?  He may just be trying to stir the pot a bit, which in this case isn't such a bad thing.

I still think the best way to get Garrett out is by finding a moderate Republican to start "primarying" him every cycle.  Pretty much the way Garrett got rid of Marge Roukema.  I know, it's tougher for a moderate to win a GOP primary, but it's probably not as tough as it is for a Democrat to win the 5th district.

    Cardinale, Russo, Sanzari? (0.00 / 0)
No shortage of moderate republicans in Bergen.  And two of them ran against Garrett in 2002.  But will they run?  Probably not.  Unity will hold for now.

If a Democrats draws some blood on Garrett then he might have a challenge in his party..

    Well... (0.00 / 0)
...I have a hard time considering Cardinale a moderate, but perhaps compared to Garrett, he is.  Which is a pretty sad state of affairs.

If Cardinale had just dropped out of the primary when it was clear he was going to lose (he didn't get the Bergen County line, did he?), I think Russo would have had a good chance of winning the nomination.  Having Russo in the seat would have made it even more impossible a district for Democrats, but he'd be a much better Congressman.  And I don't really think having a Democrat in that seat is an option, given the curent district lines.

    I agree that Russo would be like a (0.00 / 0)
Roukema: no real problem in terms of issues (she was big on Family Medical Leave before Clinton) a vote for the Republican Speaker, which sucks, but otherwise a nice guy.

Garrett keeps open the possibility that this district could go Dem, but only if there is a massive '94-like sea change election that pisses off Republican mods.  Had the election been held right after Katrina, boy look out.  But right now, i dont' see the sea changin...

    Cardinale (0.00 / 0)
Cardinale is not a moderate - he is a far right wing nut.  Cardinale stabbed Russo in the back by going against the Republican Bergen County Convention and splitting Russo's Bergen County vote.

Cardinale was working with Garrett the whole time in the primary.

Cardiale just did NOT want a moderate in there, namely Russo.  Now the question is: Although Cardinale is pretending to support Garrett  Is Cardinale really attempting to push Cino in there?  Cino and Cardinale have known each other for 30 or 40 years.

    Garrett (0.00 / 0)
I think that is just the point: Garrett has to be replaced.  He is simply not doing his job.  His position requires a certain amount of local political leadership and Garrett is simply MIA.

Garrett goes to his mountain up in Sussex County.  No one hears from him.

It is clear for the Bergen County Republicans that the Garrett-Talarico team has to go - they need to be replaced and a new team installed.  They have basically LOST four Freeholder elections in a row, except for Lisa Randall winning one seat three years ago.

I think the conclusions are have been drawn.

Cino is simply going around Bergen County picking up his votes and introducing himself - It just may be that the powers that be have already decided to push Garrett out and put Cino in.

    Michael Cino (0.00 / 0)
I know that in the 1990s Michael Cino was Chairman of the Lower Tax Coalition which was seeking to get both parties to focus on lowering property taxes.

Their strategy was to work within both parties.

Obviously no one listened at the time.  They were working on the Senior Freeze on Property Taxes.

So he has been very conservative throughout.

As for Corzine and Corzine's ethnic slurs against the Italians, I would guess if those slurs had been against any other ethnic group such as African-Americans or Jewish-Amreicans, then the Democrats would have thought differently.  However, for the Democrats it was obvious that Corzine's money was more important than the Italian Americans in New Jersey.  What a complete joke.  It just shows you that money is more important to Democrats than their own principles.

    From PoliticsNJ.com circa April 4, 2000 (0.00 / 0)
Corzine continues to take heat for slurs against Italian-Americans, but yesterday he fought back against the actions of MICHAEL CINO, the Chairman of the Columbus Coalition, an Italian-American organization. Corzine accused Cino of threatening Corzine’s wife and trying to blackmail the campaign in order to secure a paid staff position. Over the weekend, Cino posted a lengthy attack on Corzine and members of his campaign staff on the PoliticsNJ.com Message Board.

This was my very exciting first day, working on the Florio for Senate campaign.  My task was to go to Corzine's press conference and get as much information about this situation as possible so that the campaign could distance itself as much as  possible from Cino who turned out to be a complete wacko.  But the enemy of my enemy is my friend, so GO CINO!

This Story is Not True (0.00 / 0)
Florio was behind the release of the Italian ethnic slurs information about Corzine - Florios people arranged the news conference the week before - so there is no way that the Florio people would assign a new person to such a task - Florio was already knee-deep in the situation.

Florio knew about all the Italian ethnic slurs for a month.

The timing of the news conference was selected to be that week because the Florio spies in the Corzine campaign knew when Corzine was starting his television commercials - the release of the information on the Italian ethnic slurs was timed to derail Corzine's television commercial schedule.

I doubt that Cino is right of Garrett (0.00 / 0)
I have no idea what his positions are, but it is really not possible to be to the right of Garrett unless you are the candidate of the American Nazi Party.

Cardinale is definitely not a moderate.  Whether he is left or right of Garrett is unclear, but irrelevant for all intents and purposes.  Russo would not be a bad alternative to Garrett.

    MIchael Cino (0.00 / 0)
There are actually three Michael Cinos out there - so you have to be careful because it is confusing - maybe one used to be a Democrat.

Michael Cino has a long history of opposing property tax increases - He was complaining to both parties throughout the 90s.

Also, there is a Michael Cino who is a member of the NRA.  And there is Michael Cino who was invited by the Republican National Congressional Campaign Committee to their National Tax Summit in the late 1990s.  So it is confusing.  I would say just look at every candidate and evaluate what they are saying.

    Corzine is a Liar (0.00 / 0)
Yes  Corzine is a liar - no one blackmailed him.  If you want proof, call Laura Jones of News12 New Jersey and ask her about the news conference that Corzine had - there were all sorts of obvious lies in that news conference.

The story is that Laura gathered with about half the new reporters in the back of the room and they agreed that Corzine was lying about Cino.

They agreed not to run the story - Also there were other parts to the story that Corzine was attempting to say that were also obvious lies.  The parts of the story you got from the Corzine people was from reporters who ignored the obvious lies from Corzine.

Corzine was desperate to defuse the problem from his own Italian ethnic slurs, which was one of the dumbest moves by a US Senate candidate in US History.

If the Democratic party bosses had any integrity they would have gotten rid of Corzine at that point.  If the ethnic slurs were against African-Americans or Jewish-Americans, Corzine would have been out.  Corzine is a complete disaster and he just isn't that smart.
