Is New Jersey Rick Santorum's ATM?

by: bertinlefkovic

The New Jersey Jewish News had an interesting article last week about a fundraiser held in Englewood for arch-conservative Senator Rick Santorum.

After reading the article, I called a contact of mine on Robert Casey's campaign who also worked on the Dean campaign in 2003 and 2004, asking for his thoughts.

He felt that the NJJN should be deluged with letters, highlighting recent comments that Santorum has made about New Jersey as well as his failure to condemn Pat Robertson's inflammatory statements about Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, where Robertson claimed that the massive stroke that Sharon recently suffered was divine retribution for his disengagement policy.

You can e-mail the New Jersey Jewish News at editorial@njjewishnews.com.

Following are some helpful resources.

"I will do everything in my power to stop anything beneficial to New Jersey, period. I will use everything I have until New Jersey lives up to their commitments. Every single thing that benefits New Jersey in particular I will do everything I can to make sure that it gets slowed down or stopped."

Casey Condemns Robertson Comments on Sharon; Santorum Silent

Santorum should condemn comments at Justice Sunday event

PHILADELPHIA—Days after Pat Robertson’s appalling comments that Ariel Sharon’s stroke was deserved and is punishment for dividing Israel, U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum has been silent.

“As Ariel Sharon is fighting for life, the comments by Pat Robertson are shocking and abhorrent,” said U.S. Senate candidate Bob Casey.  “I condemn Robertson’s comments and call on Rick Santorum to do the same.”

Santorum is speaking at Justice Sunday III in Philadelphia this Sunday.  While standing with Jerry Falwell at this event, Santorum should take the opportunity to condemn the Robertson statement.

Sample Letter #1

It must be nice to be Senator Santorum.  He is able to trash New Jerseyans and take their money all in a six-day span.

On January 4th, speaking about a fight between Pennsylvania and New Jersey over dredging of the Delaware River, Santorum told a reporter. "I will do everything in my power to stop anything beneficial to New Jersey, period. I will use everything I have until New Jersey lives up to their commitments.  Every single thing that benefits New Jersey in particular I will do everything I can to make sure that it gets slowed down or stopped."

Less than a week later, on January 10th, Santorum traveled over the bridge for an Englewood fundraiser where he raised $50,000.  It seems Santorum has a huge disdain for New Jersey and its citizens, but doesn’t mind taking their money and going home with it.  Perhaps we should wake up and realize that Santorum is simply treating us as an ATM.

Sample Letter #2

Who does Rick Santorum think he is? One day he’s pledging to “stop anything beneficial to New Jersey,” and a few days later he’s leaving our state with thousands of dollars.

On January 4th, Rick Santorum—angered by a disagreement with New Jersey officials over the dredging of the Delaware River—vowed to “slow down” or “stop” any piece of legislation that benefited New Jersey.  Less than a week later, on January 10th, he held a fundraiser in Englewood where he collected fifty thousand dollars.

Is Rick Santorum a distinguished senator or a bully cornering us for our lunch money?

Sample Letter #3

I must say I was intrigued when I read about Senator Santorum’s fundraiser in Englewood earlier this month.  In early January one of Santorum’s buddies, Pat Robertson, said he thought Ariel Sharon deserved his stroke because, according to Robertson, Sharon divided God’s land.  Santorum did not condemn Robertson’s horrid remarks before the event, he apparently did not condemn Robertson’s comments at his New Jersey fundraiser and, he still has not condemned them.  It seems Santorum is a master of hypocrisy: he can accept money from the New Jersey Jewish community, while at the same time standing by the leader of the Christian Right even as he makes appalling anti-Israel comments.  I sure am glad Santorum is a “friend” of Israel.
