Mr Corzine - Grow a pair!

by: Thurman Hart

Fri Mar 28, 2008 at 11:37:37 AM EDT

There isn't a single detail of the story coming out of Guttenberg that wouldn't turn the stomach of a decent person.  In return for a fairly paltry list that includes a fistful of Viagra, a hatful of Macy's cards, a stupid dog, and enough cold cash to fix a bad boob-job, Mayor David Della Donna found a way to make nightclub owner Luisa Medrano's troubles disappear.  Those troubles included receiving the underage "merchandise" of a human trafficking ring and forcing the underage girls to work as prostitutes in her bar.

As sick as that is, it gets worse.  Make the jump.

Thurman Hart :: Mr Corzine - Grow a pair!
According to testimony, Javier Inclan - town council member and treasurer of the Guttenberg Democratic Party - basically functioned as the bag man.  Inclan is the one to which crooked Code Enforcement official Yogi Rogers handed envelopes stuffed full of cash.  Inclan is a vital link in showing how the money got into della Donna's hands.  Presumably, he has traded his testimony (which is forthcoming) for immunity.

This is the same Javier Inclan that was only recently named as deputy chief-of-staff for Gov. Jon Corzine.  For those who have never watched The West Wing, the chief-of-staff is the one who decides who gets to see the Governor.  The CoS makes things happen without having to burden the Governor with the details of routine matters.  What the CoS is to the Governor, the deputy CoS is to the CoS.

So this is a pretty high level appointment.  In a state where the only statewide elected offices are the US Senate and Governor, it puts the person holding it in a position to be a power player behind the scenes - where it counts.  Inclan is in a position to make legislators and county party chairs indebted to him.  You want to get your town a few bucks?  Talk to Inclan.  You want to save a program from the ax?  Talk to Inclan.  If you can't get by him, you're dead.  If he takes up your case and works it, you may be sitting on the business side of the Governor's desk.

Now I have a problem.  The Governor's deputy Chief of Staff was apparently more than knee-deep in a corruption ring that allowed underaged women to be held against their will, forced to become whores, then undergo at least one "abortion by being kicked down the stairs".  I'm not saying Inclan knew that was what Madrano was doing, but he had to damn sure know that receiving big envelopes of cash from a Code Enforcement guy wasn't copacetic.  If he's in position to testify against della Donna; then he's been walking around for years knowing that Guttenberg's government was being twisted into a self-enrichment program for the della Donna family.

I'm a Democrat, and I make no bones about it.  But I'm not blind enough in my partisanship to say that being a faithful bag man is a qualification for holding one of the highest ranking positions in the executive branch.  I guess I'm just weird or something.  When I cast my vote for Jon Corzine, I thought all his talk about reform and ethics included his own cabinet and appointees.  I didn't know he had his fingers crossed or maybe he was thinking about those other guys' ethical problems.

This is just unacceptable.  If, as I suspect, Inclan has traded testimony for non-prosecution, then he has all the reward a crooked politician has any right to hope for.  It is an insult to the people of New Jersey and to any common measure of decency to allow him to serve in that position when he has the stench of corruption up to his neck.

Again, I'm not saying Inclan knew that the payoffs were over international human trafficking and sex slavery.  I'm saying that he didn't care.  He knew that taking this big stack of money over here and letting it disappear over there would keep his bread buttered and that was the only God-damned thing he cared about.

Governor Corzine.  If you are any kind of man at all, Javier Inclan will be sent packing before the end of the day.  It's time you stood up and made your actions heard above the fray.  It's time you grew a pair and made a real difference.

Or it's time to start thinking about what other job you'd like to have come next November.

What should happen to Javier Inclan for participating in this corruption ring?
Tex is right! Send him packing!
He should keep his job.
I don't understand the question.

That's ridiculous. (0.00 / 0)
We've pulled nominations of people for things 1/10th as bad as this.
He should lose his job immediately and be barred from government employment.

How dumb is our governor...!?!?PLEASE tell me he appointed this guy BEFORE the indictments were brought against the mayor/etc.

Nope (0.00 / 0)
Inclan was appointed in January, della Donna was indicted in September.

But I have no idea if Inclan's name was mentioned in the indictments.

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

I'm afraid... (0.00 / 0)
we have to give the Gov. a pass on the appointment. From the Bergen Record, Inclan was appointed in January 2007, (not 2008).
There is still not much of an excuse to keep him around, but the Gov. couldn't have known (I don't think) that he would be involved in this mess 9 months later.

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
for the correction.  It gets him off the hook for the appointment, but not for keeping him around.

Biggest Disappointment (0.00 / 0)
Jon Corzine is exactly the right Governor that New Jersey needs at this particular time in its history. The economic hole the state now finds itself in after more than a decade of digging cries out for the leadership of a person with Corzine's career credentials. Despite the disagreements and debate over his proposed fiscal remedies, he's the right guy at the right time.

However, the single biggest disappointment is his outrageous tolerance for the seedy underbelly of the political playbook in New Jersey.

Because of his financial independence, many of us thought he would be insulated by the Boss system that breeds the character of corruption that so dominates our landscape.

But, alas, we have found that not to be the case. Wealthy and powerful in his own right, Corzine has tolerated and coddled the Bosses and looked away from the corruption they promote.

He breaks bread with these Bosses at every opportunity and is eager to please them at every turn.

This is the biggest disappointment of the Corzine Governorship. I am sure that the Inclan appointment was originally made at the behest of some Hudson Boss finding the Governor all too quick to please.

Now, the Governor finds himself in an all too familiar, embarrassing position.

Mr. Inclan should do the right thing by falling on his own sword, shielding the Governor from further criticism and resigning asap.

So true (0.00 / 0)
I agree with you on Mr. Inclan falling on his own sword.

I Would Disagree with the Headline (0.00 / 0)
Mr. Corzine doesn't need to grow a pair; there's nothing particularly courageous about the decision he faces.

He does, however, need to use what lies between his ears.

No, no, I'll even take that back. Removing Inclan from the Governor's Office is -- or should be -- a No-Brainer.

Over the top (0.00 / 0)
I'm no fan of the gov. but putting Inclan's head on the chopping block for testifying is over the top.  I seriously doubt he knew anything when Mr. Mayor isn't even being charged with knowledge of Medrano's business. Besides, don't you think she would have rolled on the mayor in a heartbeat if he DID know anything?  I'm sure The Feds would love to get a mayor on human trafficking, so obviously all they've got is what you see.  Bad, yes, but not much.

Not for testifying (0.00 / 0)
for being the bag man in the first place.

If you actually read, I say specifically that they were not willfully supporting human traficking.  But they were supporting it nonetheless.  The fact is that they didn't care what Medrano did so long as the cash came in.

Inclan was Treasurer of the Dem. Organization.  It was his job to know if the money was legally donated or not.  When someone hands you wads of cash in a shopping bag, it shouldn't be hard to figure out there's a problem with it.

Personally, I'm not willing to look away simply because these guys have a (D) after their name.

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

Not looking away (0.00 / 0)
You're still implying that they knew what she did, which is the completely unfair part.  There's a difference between "forcing the truth upon someone" and making it up.  The (D) doesn't entitle anyone to having a blind eye turned, but it does entitle them to be heard before we charge them with the Kennedy assassination just because they happen to work for the Gov.  And again, I'm not a Corzine OR a Della Donna fan.  Just someone who knows that the press loves drama and I don't always fall for it.

[ Parent ]
No, I'm not (0.00 / 0)
can you not read or are you simply being selectively illiterate here?

The original diary states that they didn't know what she was doing and so did my reply.  I'm saying that they didn't care what she was doing so long as the money kept flowing.  That's it - and that is bad enough.

It is attitudes like yours that allow corruption to flourish.  "Oh, he probably didn't know that the bagful of cash wasn't legal."  Give me a break!

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

I think Corzine should fire this creep and hire Nathan Rudy.
