Kempner wants DNC retroactive rule change

by: Juan Melli

Thu Mar 27, 2008 at 07:15:49 PM EDT

Michael Kempner & Hillary ClintonMichael Kempner -- CEO of East Rutherford-based MWW group, one of the members of "The Group" and a Clinton finance committee member -- is circulating a petition asking the DNC to break it's rules regarding Michigan and Florida.
The resolution notes that the undersigners include "many leaders and financial supporters" of the DNC. [...]

Kempner said he sent the petition to thousands of Democratic donors and activists. In his e-mail to them, he calls Obama's "tactics" in "seeking to disenfranchise more than two million voters in Florida and Michigan" those of "division and deception."

"For whatever reason, the DNC seems to be captive of the Obama campaign," he said in an interview. "The fact is that many, many long-time supporters both financially and non-financially, that have a very different point of view. We very much want to put them on notice."

This is what sore losers do when they can't win by playing by the rules. Right now, there are about 90 signers, including -- ahem -- 'Sinbad O'Tuzla', 'Pantsuit Fetish', 'Hoosier Daddy', 'Changerules Midgame', 'Heywood Jablome', 'Sheryl Crow' and 'Patently Ridiculous'. (Update: more notable signers include 'Larry Craig', 'Cheating IsAwesome', Nick Lento and 'Scorched Earth')

This sounds a lot like the letter from the wealthy pro-Clinton DCCC fundraisers to Nancy Pelosi threatening to take their ball and go home if she doesn't renounce her position that superdelegates should respect the democratic will of the voters. Of course, she rightly told them to go fly a kite.

Although Kempner says that "the genesis for the idea came out of a meeting of the campaign's finance committee a few weeks ago," he insists it "should not be interpreted by DNC chairman Howard Dean as a threat to withhold donations."

Got that? The campaign's biggest fundraisers came up with the idea, but really - no, seriously! - this has nothing to do with money. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

One of the great things about Dean's 50 state strategy and the DNC's Democracy Bonds program is that they've become better at raising money from small-dollar donors. Wealthy power brokers can implicitly or explicitly threaten all they want, but their leverage over the last few years has been significantly diminished. I'd be really surprised if Dean agreed to their retroactive rule change request.

Update: Chris Bowers makes a good point:

That's all well and good, but did it ever occur to these geniuses to actually send the letter to the people with actual purview over the matter? This is just a suggestion, but maybe, just maybe, instead of sending the letter to Howard Dean, they should send it to the rules committee which stripped Michigan and Florida of their delegates, to the members of the credentials committee who will hold jurisdiction over the matter, or to Nancy Pelosi, who will chair the convention itself. You know, the people with actual power over the matter.

Oh wait--doing that would require sending the letter to people like Harold Ickes, a member of Clinton's campaign and the DNC rules committee who voted to strip Michigan and Florida of their delegates. I guess it would look kind of strange for the Clinton campaign to be sending petitions to members of its own campaign. So, instead of sending the petition to people who actually hold purview over the matter, they have decided instead to scapegoat Howard Dean.

I certain do dispute that "there was a level playing field" and furthermore an election in which the candidates do not "participate or campaign," the public is told "does not count," and the organizers chose to hold despite the fact that they know it will not count is not an election at all.

but I do find the Group very amusing (0.00 / 0)
Remember that they openly said their motivation was to be influential, and later they endorsed Clinton without talking to Obama.  Talk about poor judgment!

Who knew she was Republican (0.00 / 0)
I've posted this before, she to me she uses the very same tactics many here hate GWB for.  The only difference between her leadership style and his is her political view.  She is treating Obama like an insolent child for daring to question her coronation.  Given ho she was run her campaign can you imagine what her White House will be like?

AND she is beating up on Obama for the very same areas John McCain can destroy her on: foreign affairs experience.  Can you imagine how her attacks on Obama will be turned around in a general election?

"It's 3AM and the phone rings, who do you want answering the call... a decorated war hero and survivor of the 'Hanoi Hilton', or someone who slept next to someone who answered the call and lied about her foreign policy experience ducking bullets?"

Hillary's biggest flaws are (0.00 / 0)
Taking for granted a national primary victory and running a 1990s campaign in 2008. Both Obama and Dean have a better grip on how campaigns and political strategy operate in the Internet era.
The old method of raising cash from corporate donors to buy TV advertising is a 20th century relic. No one interested in electoral politics watches TV ads. The remote control has rendered moot political TV ads.
The real action is on the Internet. It's where the money is raised and the conversation takes place. The Internet has gotten more people involved in the process. All activists need to be heard is a keyboard and Internet connection. In essence,  the big money influence peddlers have, to a degree, been marginalized by regular people.
For every high rolling contributor supporting Hillary's campaign there are thousands supporting Obama, and they all feel like they have skin in the game. This translates to boots on the ground.
Our military failure in Iraq can be attributed to not enough boots on the ground. Our military has the most expensive equipment money can buy, but it is failing because blowing up things does not attract allies.
If the Clintonistas believe blowing up the Democratic Party will bring success, it's no wonder they're threatening to vote for McCain if Obama gets the nod.
Any member of the Democratic leadership who caves in to these threats also deserves to lose.
Triangulation only works when the candidate is Bill Clinton, not Hillary.
The DLC is a bane on the Democratic Party and must be expunged. Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything. Given the choice, voters will always pick the real Republican over the Republican-lite candidate.
I have nothing against the Clintons, but perhaps waiting for Chelsea might be the best route for them to take.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.

Where was she six months ago? (0.00 / 0)
I think the fact of the matter is that Clinton, didn't care about the disenfranchisement of these voters six months ago when she was the front runner. Now she is just using the voters for her own political gain. If I were from Florida of Michigan, I would feel used by Senator Clinton. She is truly a sleazy, self aggrandizing opportunist; not to mention the fact that she is actively destroying the Democratic Party. If she really cared about this country, she would drop out of the race.
