Blue Jersey Exclusive - Anne Wolfe to withdraw from 5th District Race

by: Jeff Gardner

Sat Jan 21, 2006 at 01:25:23 PM EST

5th District Congressional Candidate Anne Wolfe is meeting with supporters this weekend to discuss the future of her candidacy. Sources report Wolfe has decided to withdraw from the race. Money appears to be the biggest problem, as the 5th District's viability has proved a hard sell to the DCCC.

Wolfe's withdrawal will leave soon-to-be-declared candidate Paul Aronsohn with the job of dumping Rep. Scott Garrett, but some are doubtful about Aronsohn's chances.

UPDATE: (Anne's Press Release announcing her withdrawal appears below the fold)

Jeff Gardner :: Blue Jersey Exclusive - Anne Wolfe to withdraw from 5th District Race
D. Anne Wolfe announced today that she will not seek the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey's Fifth Congressional District in 2006.

Wolfe, the 2004 nominee, has been the only formally declared Democratic candidate for the seat since April 2005. In 2004, Wolfe earned a record 120,000 votes – more than presidential candidate John Kerry. Since declaring her candidacy for the 2006 election, Wolfe has raised more than $80,000. All funds have been legally declared to the Federal Election Commission.

Though Wolfe has been praised by influential groups like the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and EMILY's List, those groups have declined to target New Jersey's Fifth Congressional District for the 2006 campaign cycle.

"The viability of this race, as determined by the DCCC and other Democratic Party organizations in Washington, is crucial for the funding of our campaign. At a minimum price tag of $1.5 million dollars, I simply cannot afford to run a campaign without the endorsement of the DCCC and the funding that would come with their endorsement," Wolfe said.

In addition to concerns about financial and political viability Wolfe said her attention has turned to two crucial issues in the community: The increasing environmental and health dangers posed by the Superfund site in Ringwood and the tremendous challenge facing families caring for adult children who are mentally challenged.

"These are urgent concerns for our community and deserve immediate attention," said Wolfe, adding that she will keep Gov. Jon Corzine informed on both issues.

Wolfe, a longtime leader and active member of the League of Women Voters, a long standing advocate for Good Government policy challenged her supporters to continue to work for good government, and honest and ethical political leadership.

A resident of Mahwah Township, D. Anne Wolfe is a former chairwoman of the Bergen County Improvement Authority and a former enforcement officer for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Great job, noweenman!

Sorry to see Anne go, though.  She fought hard two years ago, and would have done so again.  Her energy, intelligence and positions on the issues will be missed.

Or will they?  Hopefully she will work with Paul to address the issues that are important to her, and to get rid of that jackass Garrett.  I know Aaronson and he is a good person with the right goals.  He may not be a NJ4D progressive, but he is definitely on our side on most issues.

Another win for the entrenched, (0.00 / 0)
if she does indeed withdraw.  Emily's List, where are you when we need you???

Emily's List Is Is Not REALLY Early Yeast (0.00 / 0)
Back when Maryanne Connelly (2000) was in the same situation Anne Wolfe is in -- ran well when no one else wanted to run, then was not picked by the party to run the next time -- Emily's list did not come in until the last few weeks when polls showed a very close race.

Maryanne fought hard, raised money against the opposition of the Democratic Party, and won.  By showing that she could still raise the money, build and organization and draw support she got Emily's List support two weeks before the primary.

If, as it says above, money was a prime issue for Anne then Emily's List would not come in.  You have to show some ability to raise the cash and build support on your own before they will help you.

FWIW, (0.00 / 0)
Anne is pretty popular with the Bergen organization, so it's not really a matter of "entrenched" interests driving her out.  It's the fact that few organizations (county, state, DCCC) are going to waste money on a district that's going to be almost impossible to win, even with a good wind under Democratic sails.  Aronsohn's able to raise more money due to his connections, but I really believe he could outraise Garrett 10-1 and lose, because it's a heavily Republican seat.  It's Sussex, Warren, and the Republican portions of Passaic and Bergen, not exactly Dem-friendly territory.
