It Takes a Criminal

This is really kind of pathetic, but John Ashcroft's defense of the $52 million, no-bid contract he received from former employee Chris Christie is, well, that he's been criticized before and can take it.

"As you may or may not recall there were many people who attacked me in the way that I chose to defend America from terrorists. Those assaults did not shake my commitment to protecting American lives through terrorism attacks," he said. "Similarly, a monitor should be immune to pressure and should not allow attacks from whatever sources that contaminate the cause of justice.  I will not allow external pressures to compromise my responsibilities as a monitor."

Well, yeah.  But people criticized you for how you chose to defend America from terrorists because you also chose to shred the Constitution and spy on American citizens without warrants in clear violation of the law.

Which, of course, is what qualifies you to monitor a lawbreaking company as it works to comply with the law.

After all, it takes a criminal to catch a criminal.

UPDATE: Oh, it gets better and better.

"I really don't believe that Mr. Christie is a law violator.  His record as a prosecutor is an outstanding record," Ashcroft said.  ...

"He's made a major reputation attacking public corruption, and for this committee to attack him is inappropriate," said Ashcroft.  "Here's Mr. Christie's record in the newspaper.  140 convictions.  No wonder New Jersey's politicians are nervous."

I have two words for you, Mr. Ashcroft: Eliot Spitzer.

Monitor Ashcroft exits the hearing (0.00 / 0)
Ashcroft danced around close questioning re: his appointment by first arguing that it is inappropriate to discuss an open criminal case, and then launching into the details of the alleged kickbacks.

then he thanked the committee and went off to catch a plane to Florida...

so long General.

Anybody think it's weird the Spitzer thing came out the day before Ashcroft testified?

It did distract from the coverage Ashcroft is going to get.

But the DoJ is probably more worried about Christie, and the fact that Spitzer is a former tough-guy take-no-prisoners prosecutor brought down by illegal behavior doesn't help with the myth of the Christie.

It just shows that a great record of catching criminals doesn't immunize oneself from bad behavior.

Giuliani is another one.  He was a tough-guy prosecutor who took down the mob, then hired a Police Commissioner in Bernie Kerrick who had mob connections.  And Giuliani also used public resources to take his girlfriend (while he was still married) to and from vacation spots in Pennsylvania.

Being a tough-guy corruption buster is a good thing, but -- as Spitzer and Giuliani prove -- it doesn't mean you are a morally upright superhero.

I agree, we must stay focussed on Christie.  Spitzer's dramatic fall from grace definitely supports the argument that tough guy corruption buster means, well, nothing.

by the way: I lost my connection to the hearing moments after CC skipped town (really frustrating) Did anyone else have trouble?  I hope  Blue Jersey will be summarizing the subsequent discussion.  CC sure went after the Chair in that first round.
