Wyka responds to Frelinghuysen's Energy Vote

by: Tom Wyka

Fri Mar 07, 2008 at 10:12:27 PM EST

Matthew Simmons is the head of one of the largest investment banking firms in the world and a former energy advisor to George W. Bush.  Simmons has a great concern about the global use of fossil fuels, but it?s not for reasons you might think.  Simmons spends a great deal of his time traveling the globe at his own expense ? preaching about what he sees as a looming global crisis commonly known as ?Peak  Oil? ? a point where global oil production reaches it?s practical limits as demand continues to increase.  There?s a lot of debate as to whether we may have already passed a disastrous tipping point as the price of a barrel of oil topped $100 recently.

In addition, I don?t need to rehash points set forth about Global Warming.  Just about everyone has heard it all before.  Sadly, people seem to find themselves on either side of the argument depending on what television pundits they view most often, rather than based on the warnings of the scientific community.

Tom Wyka :: Wyka responds to Frelinghuysen's Energy Vote
Even if we put people like Mr. Simmons aside, and Al Gore for that matter, the price of fuel is rising and most people think it?s high time to start looking into viable alternatives.  Running vehicles cheaper, by way of their efficiency, or cleaning up their emissions has so many obvious benefits.   But will the pure free market find solutions for us anytime soon without causing a great deal of pain as it stumbles along without guidance.  Don?t hold your breath.

It?s with this in mind that the House of Representatives recently voted to roll back a subsidy that was given to oil companies a few years back (yes ? that?s right ? a subsidy to corporations that regularly score record profits), and use the money to research renewable energy.   The bill is called the ?Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2008,? ? HR 5351.   Only 3 of the 13 members of the New Jersey contingent stand opposed to this idea, Scott Garrett, Mike Ferguson, and our own Rodney Frelinghuysen.

The subsidies were handed out under the premise that they were intended to be an incentive for investment in production.   Unfortunately ? the oil companies had other plans.   Many used most of their windfall profits, augmented by the subsidy, to buy back stocks and pay dividends to their shareholders.    Not a bad deal.

In his weekly newsletter, Congressman Frelinghuysen said ?These costs are sure to be passed along to cash-strapped families and will put more undue stress on our slowing economy.? This sounded like a fair argument ? until one realizes that this is not a tax assessed at the pump.   As Joan Claybrook, President of Public Citizen pointed out ?Motorists will not pay higher prices at the pump for repealing Big Oil subsidies because increased taxes on corporate income are paid by shareholders, not consumers.?   Congressman Frelinghuysen?s logic is also a bit flawed overall, because it leaves out the fact that a subsidy ultimately comes out of someone?s pocket.   In this case ? it?s the American taxpayer.

So one has to wonder how much critical thought is being expended on our behalf to find real solutions to the problem of our ?addiction to oil?.  Sounds like rehab is in order, if only our elected officials would stop acting as ?enablers?.

The Oil and Gas Industries have dropped about 590 million dollars lobbying our lawmakers in D.C. since 1998, and interestingly enough ? they only rank 8th (far behind Pharma?s 1.3 billion ? but that?s a commentary for another day).    Here again we have one more example of the stunting of good public policy, courtesy of powerful deep-pocketed interests.

The Senate is now poised to move HR 5351 one step closer to the White House, where the President has predictably stated an intention to veto the bill. Our congressman and George W. Bush will stand in solidarity with Big Oil and their record profits, under the guise of protecting you, while thwarting yet another attempt to change course for the better.

Rubberstamp Rodney's bad behavoir continues (4.00 / 1)
In fact he seems to be rubberstamping Bush even more than before, if thats possible.

And I encourage everyone to go to Tom's website and contribute a few dollars.

How About Taking Back Every Penny Of.... (0.00 / 0)
....those "subsidies" that were gifts to an "industry" that claims to "produce" energy (they merely extract it from a finite and dwindling supply).

In fact, merely ending the giveaway isn't good enough for me.  I suggest that additional taxes be imposed on this industry sufficient to restore to the American taxpayers (who work for living) all the money that was given to them since the inception of this corporate welfare program.

Those monies should then be used to subsidize the
purchase of plug in hybrid vehicles that use advanced Lithium Ion battery technology that could be recharged in less than twenty minutes and yield 150 miles on a "tank'/charge.  90% of all driving would fit into that 150 mile all electric scenario.   I bet that there would be people who would only use a tank of gasoline a year with such a vehicle.  Eventually, "gas" stations would be electrical charging stations where you hung out for a few minutes when need be.

The technology for this is not science fiction; it exists now.   It's just a matter of going into mass production.

And the technology will get even better in time.

There's no reason American couldn't cut it's reliance on fossil fuels in half within 15 years; IF we make a crash program out of it!!!

There's no reason we can't become 100% energy independent within 25 years if we make it our national aim!!!

Imagine the boon to our economy the process of actualizing such a vision would be!!!

As long as assoholic whores who are bought and paid for by the petrochemical industry continue to run America; nothing will change.

It's time for new leadership in the Unites States Congress, it's time for Tom Wycka!!!

Sorry 'bout the spelling error....
