Ashcroft will testify in No-Bid-Contract-Gate Hearings

by: Juan Melli

Mon Feb 25, 2008 at 08:00:54 PM EST

AP:
Former Attorney General John Ashcroft will appear at a federal hearing looking into no-bid contracts he and others received to monitor out-of-court corporate settlements, including a New Jersey deal in which Ashcroft stood to make millions of dollars. [...]

The House hearing was prompted, in part, by complaints from two New Jersey congressmen, Reps. Frank Pallone and Bill Pascrell, after Christopher Christie, the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, awarded a contract said to be worth $27 million or more to Ashcroft to monitor a medical device maker that had entered a deferred prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors.

Some good stuff here (0.00 / 0)
The former attorney general is considered a key witness in the inquiry

The House hearing is among several inquiries now under way in Washington regarding the standards for creating monitorships and selecting monitors.

Christie, who has defended the practice as a method to correct corporate misbehavior while preserving jobs, was once Ashcroft's subordinate.

Check out my 3 paragraph primer on Polywell Fusion.

Ashcroft Is Just a "Civilian" And Really Has No Option... (0.00 / 0)
...other than "pleading the fifth".

Christie needs to be subpoenaed.   No doubt the Republicans would play hardball with a Democartic US attorney if the situation were reversed.

Why are they claiming "executive privilege" if there is nothing to hide?  As it stands now; Christies is hiding behind George Bush's "privileged" skirts.

Let's see if Ashcroft spills any beans.  (not likely.)

I hope they truly do respectfully question him aggressively and in depth and don't meekly defer to him as a former AG.

I wish they would ask Ashcroft about that scene at the hospital!   Now that would be really interesting! (Also unlikely.  lol)

PS: Pascrell and Pallone should be given... (0.00 / 0)
...an opportunity to testify as a way of publicly raising their concerns with how those contracts were awarded.

Better  yet; they should be allowed to sit in on the committee hearing as mambers for the day so they could question Ashcroft directly.  (not likely).

Also, note that Ashcroft only "agreed" to testify on the day before he knew he was going to be issued a subpoena.

No doubt he'll have constructed enough of a slick cover story to keep the inquiry busy for a few hours.    We shall see.

Thank you!  At least SOMEBODY'S doing SOMETHING in our Dem Congress that we all had such high hopes for.  Thank you!
