Obama Rally: Capacity Crowd in Jersey City. 5000 Show up. Doors Closed. 2,000 Outside.

Update: Senator Obama explains the delay. About 2,000 people were not allowed in and he had to thank them first.

Update 2: Hudson County Now says there are 5,000 people and speakers were set up outside for those who couldn't get in.

Jersey City has Obama fever! Police say close to 5,000 people showed up today at St. Peter's College to hear presidential hopeful Barack Obama speak- but there's not enough space for everyone inside the gymnasium. Lines are still around the block of people waiting to get in, and Obama is waiting to allow as many people as possible inside the gym before he takes the stage. Speakers are being set up outside St. Peter's gymnasium so the over 600 people in line can hear Obama's speech.
Newark mayor Cory Booker is firing up the crowd: "There are doubters, there are naysayers. Who say this is her backyard. That this is Hillary's house. New Jersey is Obama County!"

The crowd is chanting "Yes we can!"

I've got conflicting numbers. Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey says 1,900 people are here. A police officer earlier told me capacity is 3,000. Either way, doors are closed.

Mark Alexander says people are waiting outside to hear Barack. Don't know if that means they closed the doors. In New Hampshire Obama had to hold impromptu mini-rallies outside. Not sure if that's why this is delayed.

Police department says 500 people are outside and not allowed in. Scratch that. Obama said it was 2,000.

And the 2nd half of the crowd:

This was the line outside as of about 3pm:

on NJN there was amply coverage of this event, but it didn't really give much of the flavor of the day.

With A Week's Lead Time Obama Could Fill Up Giants Stadium... (0.00 / 0)
...with mostly young people.   And he could do it as a fundraiser with folks paying for tickets.  I would pay 50 bucks to attend such an event; and I'll likely vote for Edwards in the primary on the substance/merits.

If the police are owning up to a number of 5000; then the actual number of people in the general area who wanted to go but wouldn't wait in the long lines for hours was imho more like 20K.

I pray that sometime, between now and the summer, that vision can be fulfilled.

Imagine the effects of, say, 25,000 newly inspired motivated committed young Democratic activists/voters!

I suspect that men dominating the "old boys club"  (i.e. the machines) that now dominate the NJ Democratic Party would suffer some stinky dark staining of their underwear should the vision of the prior paragraph ever become manifest.

WIn or lose this time out; I hope Obama continues to play the role of inspiring young Americans to have some hope and give a damn about politics!

I couldn't find any video of the rally anywhere online.   If anyone taped it please put it up somewhere and let us know where!

Police estimates (0.00 / 0)
Keep in mind this is Hudson County. Not that I'm saying this estimate is off - I think it's accurate or close to it - but if it were, I wouldn't be surprised to see them inflate the numbers.

Giants Stadium... (0.00 / 0)
...would be a little chilly this time of year.

What they should do is an event at the Prudential Center in Newark so that people from all over the state could easily take the bus and train.

There is no doubt in my mind that with a couple of weeks notice, they could sell 20,000 tickets for $5-25 with a big dollar fundraiser at the NJPAC or the Robert Treat Hotel a few blocks away.
