Roman Holiday, Jersey Style

Here are some parting shots from Rome where the NJ death penalty repeal was the big story bouncing around old Europe this past week. And that's just the beginning of the story.

You'll laugh, you'll cry.  It's better than Cats.

Bravo! (4.00 / 3)
It WAS better than cats.  I did laugh, I did cry.  Excellent reporting as usual.  I love your video reports.  Keep them coming!

I especially found your closing explanation of why the death penalty doesn't work very powerful.

You're forgiven for being emotional about this event.  It IS emotional.  At a time when George Bush and Dick Cheney are hiding evidence about torturing people in 2007 for Pete's sake - and so many feel that losing our souls in an illegal war is worth it for our security, it is astounding that the folks on the side of justice and sanity actually won a huge victory for humanity this week.  Score one for the good guys - Finally.  I feel that the pendulum is starting to swing away from despair and tragedy to enlightenment and hope.

Thank you for covering the stories that really matter, Jay.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Jay, bless you, that was lovely!  Get home safely--we need you.  And a joyous Christmas to all...

Thanks for covering this great occasion Jay! (4.00 / 1)
May New Jersey's declaration of death to the death penalty be the first of many steps toward common human decency in the Garden State and throughout the whole of America..

Let's keep rocking the status quo and keep rolling toward the "more perfect union" that our Constitution directs us to strive for!!!

Beautiful Job, Jay! (4.00 / 1)
I can't believe that you were really in Rome for this amazing event.

I love Sr. Helen Prejean.  When I taught in West Virginia, and the conversation wound around to the DP, my blood-thirsty students would invoke God and the Bible for its justification.  I just quoted Helen: "I refuse to believe in a God who is less compassionate than I am."  No one can question her God-cred, but they didn't like being lectured to by a pacifist!!

Have a safe trip home.  You done good.

If anyone never read the book Dead Man Walking, it's the bombdiggity.  and her message of compassion and forgiveness and tolerance is one that's timely this season FOR SURE.

Very enjoyable Jay. And inspiring.

Jay - loved the video.

And PS - I was so moved by this Nora Ephron column at HuffPo (which mentions NJ, Juan) that I had to share it with you all:

If/when you have time, please read the post and the comments.

I'm busy trying to be my Grinchy self - making lemons out of lemonade.  Bah, Humbug on everyone's holidays.

But this post moved me to tears.  Yes Virginia, a lot of Americans have hearts and souls.  But the Bu$h administration, the Beltway media, and even our Democratic candidates (See, e.g., Glenn Greenwald & Paul Krugman) make us out to be the very antithesis of what many of us aspire to.

I always hated the Jerry Seinfeld show but I bow to:

Festivus!

Jeez, Juan - can't you add a spell check to the comments section?

I just watched this for about the 7th time. (4.00 / 1)
And it just never gets old.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.
