Steve Adubato Unearths Vincent Foster

by: nathanrudy

Tue Dec 18, 2007 at 01:48:20 PM EST

New Jersey's own Steve Adubato is a must visit for most pols in the state, and has been growing in stature as a political writer, talk show host and opinionator.  He even has a column on MSNBC now, showing that he is moving outside the state.

But with crap like this (noted by TPM), maybe he should just stay in the bowels of NJ politics.

Bill and Hillary want the media to focus on are only the positive aspects of her experience but won't say a word about such topics as "Travelgate;" "Whitewater;" exactly how Vince Foster died; missing billing records; or Hillary's role as architect of the failed effort for universal healthcare.

Wow!  Maybe Steve can blame Hillary for Mike Huckabee releasing Wayne Drummond to rape and kill again!

This is the problem with Democrats who become talking heads -- as soon as they get any play in the greater media world they instantly start buying into the crap the Republicans have been throwing around for the past 30 years, and in particular into the hateful lies they spewed about the Clintons for the past 15.

Here these are one by one:

  • Travelgate: Upon taking over the White House, the Clintons fired a bunch of staffers in the travel office and hired new ones.  Somehow this became a huge deal: a new administration brought their own people in.  Why won't Hillary talk about it on the stump?
  • Whitewater: This was the fevered imaginings of the right wing lunatics that Bill and Hillary Clinton were somehow culpable for a screwed up investment scheme on which they lost money and for which four separate Republican special prosecutors found no evidence against them.  That's right: four Republican special prosecutors, and the best they could get was Bill lied about getting oral sex outside of his marriage.  Steve is totally right that we need to investigate and discuss this one again!
  • Vince Foster's Death: Again, four Republican special prosecutors determined that Vince Foster committed suicide, was not murdered, there was no foul play, the body was not moved, and Hillary had nothing to do with it!  Of course the sad, private death of a close friend 13 years ago should be a basic part of the stump speech.
  • Missing Billing Records: Yep, they were missing and the right wingers were going nuts over them, suggesting that the smoking gun was in them and Bill and Hillary were hiding them!  How nefarious. Then the records were found, turned over to the prosecutor and, shockingly, there was nothing bad in them.  Nothing.  Hillary should answer for that!
  • Healthcare debacle: Hillary did screw this one up, and has repeatedly said so on the stump, at debates, in interviews.  She suggests that because she has been through the fire on the health care issue she is best suited for taking it on again.  As Steve says, why won't she talk about it?

Adubato is dredging up Republican smears that not only cost the American taxpayers millions of dollars, but were proven false repeatedly by Republican prosecutors.  Then Adubato raises his own lie about Clinton, that she won't talk about the failed effort to institute universal national health care when she most assuredly has.

Look, I'm a John Edwards guy and I really hope he gets the nomination and Hillary gets to stay in the Senate.  I've never been a big fan of either Clinton, and would have preferred Tsongas in 1992 and my Dad in 1996.

But that's all besides the point.  When our spokesmen like Steve Adubato make their bones on trotting out disproven right wing lies against other Democrats, then we are fighting a massive uphill battle.

Maybe you can say there's some Karma here after Clinton NH co-chair Bill Shaheen slyly brought up Obama's teenage drug use or Clinton backer and former Senator Bob Kerrey "innocently" repeated the "madrassa" claims.  But if Shaheen and Kerrey were wrong, so is Adubato.

your Dad ran for President in 1996? (0.00 / 0)
I wish that I would have known.  I would have voted for him instead of Ralph Nader.

Returning to the topic at hand, do you know who Adubato's father is supporting?  Is he with Cory Booker in support of Obama?

If so, one could argue that Adubato Jr. was carrying his father's water.  If not, and Adubato Sr. is supporting Clinton, one could argue that Jr. is trying to publicly distance himself from his father.

Either way, he is now a pundit and not a spokesman for the Democratic Party, and clearly a lazy one at that.  There are plenty of more effective, interesting, and sophisticated questions that Jr. could/should be raising about Clinton.  These are lame indeed.

answering my own question (0.00 / 0)
Per this PolitickerNJ.com piece, Adubato Sr.'s minions, Joe DiVincenzo and Theresa Ruiz are supporting Hillary Clinton, which means that Adubato Sr. is most likely supporting her as well.

Thus, this could be Jr.'s attempt to distance himself from his father.  Or it's just lazy punditry.  You be the judge.

yes, but... (0.00 / 0)
...Jr.'s laziness might have made him somewhat less welcome in the North Ward this year.  It will be interesting to see if Jr. will be going home for Christmas or if he has to pay a visit to Cory Booker's house, instead, where he might be somewhat more welcome.

What about those Cattle Future Contracts? (3.00 / 1)

It's hard to explain the $100,000 that Hillary made playing the futures market as anything other than an illegal payoff by a lobbyist for a firm that took the losing side of those contracts.

This and a few other of the issues (Whitewater might have lost money, but there was a similar influence peddling aspect to it that can't be white-washed) all point to a not-so-pretty side of the Clintons .   I don't see that America will want that in a President.

We need a fresh start in this country.  I'm for Obama or Edwards.

Best,
pb

After Haliburton's bonus payments to Cheney or Guiliani's various 9/11 profiteering, the cattle futures seem to be even more of just a cheap shot.

Whitewater was an even bigger waste of prosecutorial money.

[ Parent ]
I don't want Cheney or Guiliani either (0.00 / 0)

I agree that Cheney is a crook and Giuiliani is just out for himself.   But that doesn't make Hillary Clinton's conduct any better.

Oh, goodness (0.00 / 0)
Maybe if I write it in capital letters it will help?

THE PROSECUTORS INCLUDING KENNETH STARR INVESTIGATED THE CATTLE FUTURES QUESTION AND FOUND NO WRONGDOING!!!!

FOUR FRICKING REPUBLICAN SPECIAL PROSECUTORS CLEARED THE CLINTONS OF ANY WRONGDOING IN THE WHITEWATER CASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KENNETH STAR SPENT TENS OF MILLIONS OF FRICKING DOLLARS WITH HUNDREDS OF LAWYERS AND INVESTIGATORS AND EVEN MORE RIGHT WING HELPERS AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG BEYOND LYING ABOUT SPOUSAL CHEATING.

I mean, Jesu-fricking-chriminy what does it take to put this one to fricking rest.

And I am an Edwards guy.

[ Parent ]
Writing in Capitol letters doesn't make it true (0.00 / 0)

1.  Where do you find evidence that Kenneth Starr investigated the cattle futures question and found no wrongdoing?   It doesn't appear to be in the final report.  From information on the web such as Wikipedia, it appears that the statute of limitations may have run out on trading infractions.  Her partner in the futures contract was fined for his behavior.

The details of the cattle futures contracts are detailed on Wikipedia.   The odds of "1 in 250 million" of Clinton successfully making those trades should make one question her honesty here.

2.  The Clintons were never charged in Whitewater because of insufficient evidence, but neither were they cleared by the reports.   15 of their friends and associates were convicted or plea bargained for Whitewater.

"What does it take to put this one to fricking rest?"

For me, the Clintons had skeletons in their closet and in trying to defend them in cases where they clearly did something wrong, the Democratic party lost touch with many people in the country.  People whose economic and social interests are with the Democratic party voted against Gore, Kerry, because they were sick of the Clinton sleeze factor and wanted the "honesty" of Bush (they were tricked).

The way to lay it rest is to not defend Hillary or pillage reporters who bring up factual evidence of wrongdoing in her past.   The facts aren't going away and if Clinton is the nominee, look forward to 4 more years of a Republican presidency.

Let's Put It This Way.... (0.00 / 0)
.....if there was the slightest chance that any kind of criminal charge could have been pursued; the Republicans (Starr being but one of many) would have nailed the Clintons many years ago.

Princetonblue is 100% right in so far as there  certainly has been the appearance of some impropriety.

Shocking as it may be to some; it seems that the Clinton's may have used their connections to feather their own nests on occasion.

There are no perfect candidates.  There are no perfect humans.

My own sense is that John Edwards is the best shot we have in terms of progressive agendas and elect-ability.   http://www.jedreport.com/2007/...

Having said that, if Hillary (or any Democrat running for that matter) ends up being the nominee; she'll still be far far better than anything on the Republican side.

I would hope that we can all unite around whoever the Democratic party nominates.

Four more years of Bushistic policies may be more than our democracy can bear; the stakes are that high.

Nathan Rudy is also right.  I don't think it was productive, or even fair, for Adubato to go out of his way to do a hatchet job on her that sounds like it was written by a Republican flak.

It's a safe bet that Adubato has been deeply aware of the NJ political scene for decades all his adult life (in fact I count myself as a fan of most of what he's had to say); I hope that he comes out against the legalized bribery/bossism that runs rampant in NJ with the same level of scathing verbiage.

Perhaps Steve's just trying to impress his new bosses at msnbc with how "fair and balanced" he can be?

Wow all that in 8 years? (0.00 / 0)
Compare that to the 7 years of Dubya!

Adubato is making a mountain out of a mole-hill ... and everyone seems to know it!

On the other hand it could just be a reminder of the things that the rabid Hillary Haters will be bringing up and twisting.

I'm sure they will be creative and make up some really shocking and absurd stuff that will probably backfire on them

Not a Rabid Hillary Hater (0.00 / 0)

I wish Clinton didn't have these skeletons in her closet.  On many issues, she's the best candidate we have.  But these issues go to the issue of character and make her unelectable.

Every Candidate has flaws (0.00 / 0)
But in the end, who will be the most competent and prepared to lead this country out of the worst total mess since the Great Depression?

I think the majority will agree in their minds and guts that it will be Clinton.

When all is said and done, she will ask, "are you better off now or 8 years ago?"

That answer should be simple!

my 2 cents.

leader? (0.00 / 0)
I think Clinton would be a fine President, but she's no leader. Leaders lead. Clinton plays it safe and follows the cw until the polls indicate it's changed.

On leadership (0.00 / 0)
My friends in New York, who are from both upstate and downstate would disagree.  Yes, she certainly has both feet on the ground and has the scars from political experience not to have a hair trigger, but they stress that as a representative of New York they feel she has taken leadership on many important issues.

No, she is not a revolutionary, but we need stability, we need to turn a new course and someone in charge that has the knowledge, experience and leadership to get it done. Someone Presidential. I think that person is she!

Sometimes true leaders come out only when the situation arises. History has lots of those.

Shouldn't you in the interests of full disclosure mention that you are a Clinton delegate candidate?  We would hope that you believe the Senator is the best candidate.

I think the concern that many of us have about the junior Senator from New York is that "leading the charge" against one of the five worst presidents ever is not a role that she has taken on.  Whether that is Mark Penn or a desire to retain the so-called "sensible center" which seems to merely be the conventional wisdom is something to still be determined.  Obviously, she is still better than any of the GOP "choices," but that reticience is probably why she hasn't yet managed to close the sale.

It is no secret that I'm on Hillary's National LGBT Steering Committee (4.00 / 1)
As if I'm hiding something? Gimme a break!

The reason is that her campaign asked me. I liked her and Richardson and was waiting for Gore. To be honest I had some qualms about one of her position papers. I told them about my concern, asked them to "correct and clarify" her statement and put in on her web site for all to see.

You know what? They did it! ... and when I pointed out what they had done, the Edwards campaign put similar statements on their web site.

That impressed me.

As far as closing the sale... that is what this primary process is all about!

There are many good Democratic candidates, including a couple who, like Hillary, have a political philosophy more like mine. but she is top tier and  realistically... the one!

Just to be clear (0.00 / 0)
I wasn't saying you were trying to "hide" anything, but disclosing conflicts of interest (potential or otherwise) is a wise thing.  XT mentions that he blogs for Rothman and SJBrian mentioned that he volunteered for Whelan's campaign when posting about it.

Where is the leadership? (0.00 / 1)

"Sometimes true leaders come out only when the situation arises. History has lots of those."

Are there any areas in which she has distinguished herself as a leader?  A leader doesn't just emerge once they are elected President.  It seems that the main leadership on opposing Bush or the war on Iraq or other issues has come from other Democratic politicians.   And if value is to be found in the art of compromise, how does one reconcile that with the many accounts of the health care debacle that assert that there could have been a health care solution in 1992 if Clinton had been willing to compromise.
