Roberts: Paid Family Leave Not A Question Of If, But When

by: Juan Melli

Thu Dec 13, 2007 at 04:26:08 PM EST

Update: Title fixed (had it reversed)

Following up on the previous post, Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts just issued a statement saying the caucus has some concerns with the bill as written, though he believes paid family leave "will soon become law in New Jersey":

"The Assembly Majority Caucus spent the better part of an hour discussing the paid-family leave issue from all sides.  Members expressed significant support and significant concerns about the legislation.

"It was clear from the scope of discussion that we will need more time to work through some issues, such as the bill's impact on small businesses, the potential for abuse, and the timing of some of the bill's provisions.

"These issues are surmountable and it is my belief that a paid-family-leave insurance bill will soon become law in New Jersey.  It's not a question of if, it's a question of when."

Labor ,Not Roberts is to blame (0.00 / 0)
It is a shame that Roberts is playing games with this bill.

The Bill will become law. But Roberts must show the business community that " he cares".

The reason it is not law today is because the Business lobby worked hard against the bill for 6 months and the Labor community , except one CWA Local  President, sat on their hands until about two weeks ago. When the supporters of this Bill finally woke up and began to lobby they were very effective. But the Business sector already had a head start.

Labor better wake up in this State and begin to stand behind issues that are good for all workers. It appears that many  Labor leaders have become full of themselves and have forgotten that nothing comes just because you show up.

Labor got complacent and that is why this Bill is not law today.
