Corzine Stands Up for Paid Family Leave

by: Juan Melli

Wed Dec 12, 2007 at 03:39:22 PM EST

Corzine's statement:
"To re-emphasize the point I made yesterday, the proposed family leave insurance legislation has no new mandates on small businesses with 50 or fewer employees.  The legislation contains no new requirements for any business, and has no requirement that a small business hold a position open while an employee is receiving family leave insurance benefits.

"If a small business chooses to deny family leave, the only way an employee can receive family leave insurance benefits is to quit the job - an option that is highly unattractive.  Based on the experience of California, most workers faced with this impossible decision chose to remain employed and received no benefits. Having to choose to quit your job in order to receive family leave insurance benefits is really no choice at all.

"Ideally every worker should be able to provide care for loved ones and maintain a limited income during a time of family crisis, secure in their ability to return quickly to their job.  I wholeheartedly support this legislation and its promise to provide financial support for workers who are in need of leave and have the ability to take it."

Assembly Speaker Roberts will be discussing paid family leave with the Democratic caucus tomorrow supposedly to figure out some way to "compromise" with the business lobby, even though they have made clear they have no interest in compromising. I hope the caucus stands up for working families and refuses to capitulate on this important issue.

Kusos To Corzine: Better Late Than Never... (0.00 / 0)
Imagine if Corzine had issued such a clear and strong morally/politically correct statement on the day that the big money lobbyists invaded our statehouse?

Wow!  Now that would have been a profile in courage.  None the less, it's great to the good Governor "on board"!!!

It seems that common sense and common human decency may yet win the day.

It's a shame that the "default setting" in our legislature seems to be on "big money wins" as opposed to "the people win".

It's a shame that our elected representatives only seem to do the right thing if/when they are forced/shamed into it.

Meanwhile, this battle is far from over.  Let's keep the up the pressure.

Re: (0.00 / 0)
I think Corzine has consistently been publicly supportive of paid family leave. It appears to be just Roberts who is getting cold feet.

Thanks for the Info, I Guess... (0.00 / 0)
...I would have loved for him to have donned a suit of armor and ridden a white horse up the capital steps (does it have steps?) on the day the place was being lobbied hard by the opponents of this bill...and then to have counter-lobbied along side the opposition.

Now, that would have been quite a photo op/story!  lol

Corzine still has time to find/manifest his highest destiny (as Governor/leader etc), I pray he does.

New Jersey is the kind of place that, if/when it gets truly straightened out/fixed, can have powerfully positive national and global repercussions.

Good reasons for "cold feet" (0.00 / 0)
The bill is flawed, and I'm not confident this legislature is competent enough to fix all those flaws.

One problem I have is that, if I understand it correctly, employees in small companies will be paying $52 a year for this coverage but won't be guaranteed their jobs when they return, unlike people in big companies.  That's unfair.

There also doesn't appear to be a process to evenly and fairly judge validity of leave requests.  If this thing is abused, it does more harm than good to the public perception of social programs in general.

I think this benefit is important to have, but frankly, I think it should be paid out of employer, not employee, pockets and that it could be applied as private disability insurers apply similar protections now, with the employer deciding what qualifies and then avenues for employee appeal.  If it were employer paid and small employers were exempted from any aspect, then it would be fair.

That is simply allowing the "perfect" to become the enemy of the good. n/t (0.00 / 0)

Roberts/Cryan Anti-Family? (0.00 / 0)
Not a single Republican vote is needed in either the Senate or the Assembly ( although I am sure some Family oriented Republican Legislators will vote YES) for Paid Family Leave to pass.
Ths success of this Bill is on the heads of the State Democrats. They are either going to stand with those who want to make the Family the #1 priority or they are going to stand with those who want to force  people to choose between a sick family member and losing a job.

The choice is clear.

As the leaders in the Assembly Cryan and Roberts are either pro-Family or anti-Family.

Nice (0.00 / 0)
for Corzine to stand up for us after selling us down the river.  I guess it's easier to stand when you dump have the payload.

Caucus Vote (0.00 / 0)
It will be important to find out who was for and against this Bill behind closed doors tomorrow.

Any Democrat who makes an anti-family decision should be known.

I hope the press does its work and makes it known who helped and hurt this BIll.
