Ocean County GOP to Nominate Flaming Homophobe to Replace Saxton

by: Juan Melli

Sun Dec 09, 2007 at 04:28:00 PM EST

Freeholder John KellyPolitickerNJ reports that the Ocean County Republican party will nominate Ocean County freeholder John P. Kelly as their candidate for the seat being vacated by Rep James Saxton.

In 2005 when Lieutenant Laurel Hester was dying of lung cancer and asked the county to allow her to pass her pension on to her domestic partner, Mr. Kelly was the freeholder who said it would "violate the sanctity of marriage" and that the estimated 45 cent tax increase on county residents was a tremendous cost. The Asbury Park Press rightfully slammed him on both counts.

After months of lobbying and enormous political pressure, the five-member board of freeholders relented, and voted 4-0 to grant county employees domestic partner benefits. Laurel Hester won, just weeks before she died. The only freeholder to conveniently miss the vote: John Kelly. Some reports said he was out of the state at the time. But the freeholder board has this strange fixation with always appearing "unified", and it's widely understood that Kelly was at home hiding - too cowardly or ashamed to face a frail but triumphant Lt Hester.

In a state that provides civil unions and is considering moving forward with real marriage equality, John Kelly is a relic of an intolerant past. It's really sad if that's the best the Ocean County GOP has to offer.

oh the humanity (4.00 / 1)
John Kelly....

this is either a cleverly disguised trojan horse or the stupidest idea to come out of nj-3, like, ever.

scarey either way.

If John Kelly is the Republican nominee (4.00 / 3)
the money we could raise for John Adler would be mind-boggling.

first in line (0.00 / 0)
i wanna get first in line to host a house party here in nj-3 to help raise enough  cash and awareness to send john kelly back under whatever rock he crawled out from.

i can think of no more satisfying foe to pick off.

the two choices (0.00 / 0)
Alright, so the GOP is going to run either Myers, a lobbyist who is on the watch-list for the Center for Public Integrity, or Kelly, a homophobe who is handpicked by Boss Gilmore. I would imagine that Myers is more formidable, but I'm looking forward to Adler running against either one.

Is it just me, or... (3.00 / 1)
do you all agree that that man looks like someone who would appear on "To Catch A Predator" with Chris Hansen...  lol

John P. Kelly cannot run from Laurel Hester's ghost (4.00 / 1)
I remember John P. Kelly.

I remember when he used his position as Ocean County's Law and Public Safety Chairman, to misinterpret the law and misconstrue what constitutes providing safety to the public by coldly appraising the common wish of gay people to see their families recognized, as a violation of the "sanctity of marriage".

Laurel Hester's simple plea for equity focused a movement. Maybe the greatest thing she did was educate straight people, though we may need to remind voters that John P. Kelly had to be forced unwillingly to that education. But bless all those who forced him.

I hope he runs. But he can't outrun Laurel Hester's ghost.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

ROTFLMFAO (0.00 / 0)
First, you need a newer picture of Kelly.  He's twice as fat now.

He is the epitome of slovenly, dumb, crude, lazy and arrogant.  I'm not exaggerating.

Did I mention he's dumb as a rock?

So, good luck with that, George Gilmore and Ginny Haines.  I don't think anyone in the the Burlington County GOP will do anything except laugh at this nomination.

For the record, the photo is from the Ocean County website.

Kelly is too good to be true ... (0.00 / 0)
What a candidate! And I LOVE those aviator glasses ... they're so Erik Estrada!

Makes me want to shift my voter registration and party allegiance back to Ocean County and the Republicans just so I can make a small contribution to having the Pride of Eaglewood become John Adler's opponent.

As Steven G. said, fundraising against this guy would break records.
