Allen on run for Congress: I'm certainly inclined to do it

by: Jason Springer

Sun Nov 11, 2007 at 10:54:03 PM EST

Republican State Senator Diane Allen appears ready to launch a bid for Congress in the 3rd District...
"I'm very seriously considering it," Allen told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I'm certainly inclined to do it."
Allen says she was contacted by State and National Republican Party members, which I'm sure won't make bosses George Gilmore and Glenn Paulsen very happy.  Allen talked about what the bottom line will be for her decision on whether or not to make a run...
Allen plans to meet with the National Republican Congressional Committee in Washington this week to discuss financing for the campaign, which could cost $2 million or more. Before she jumps in with both feet, however, the veteran legislator said campaign financing issues must be settled.

"It's a big lift," she said of her probable congressional campaign. "It's going to require millions of dollars. I have to be sure that's obtainable."

It's telling that she wants the seat, but before declaring, Allen wants to make sure she won't have to do the heavy lifting to get it.  The national party is broke so she may be barking up the wrong tree.  The DCCC smells blood with a candidate like State Senator John Adler already declared for the seat and Allen is talking $2 million just for a general challenge.  That doesn't take into account the brusing primary it appears she will be facing to get to the general.  Stay Tuned.

Allen and the Republican Follies (0.00 / 0)
The whole Paulsen-Allen blow-up is a strange course of events considering Boss Paulsen has been Allen's confidante and benefactor since day 1. Forgive me if I consider that spat as being 12 years too late.

Allen should have let district 7 voters know that she may run for congress while she was running for state senate; Adler did this, and it should be expected of any responsible politician.

Whoever emerges from the Republican primary, whether it is Allen or Kelly, who seem to be the frontrunners right now, they will then have an organization behind them, and the factionalism will stop. This will be a knock-out, drag-out fight, but with the anti-national Republicans sentiment of the district, and with Democratic gains there, I think the advantage goes to Adler (with lots of grassroots work and volunteerism, of course).

free advice to Allen: get a check now (0.00 / 0)
because the NRCC has just under $2 million cash on hand.  So she needs their entire current warchest!
She'd better not believe an IOU.

The DCCC has over $28 million, so Adler can get plenty of support.

"It's going to require millions of dollars. I have to be sure that's obtainable."

So it's not about Diane's values, her vision, her hunger or her drive.  it's about her trying to have her path to the Capitol (to represent me in Congress) subsidized by....anyone else.

that reminds me of the time Naomi Campbell told a reporter that for runway shows "I don't get out of bed for anything less that 100,000."

WhoTF does Diane Allen think she is?  a supermodel?

that's not fair (3.33 / 3)
Diane Allen wouldn't be the first person from either party to approach a run for office cautiously, based on financial considerations.

As someone who has run for the U.S. Senate and obviously still has federal ambitions, it makes perfect sense for her to be careful, knowing that a loss to John Adler, even a close one, could negatively impact any future runs that she might choose to make.

There are probably plenty of policy-based reasons to bash her.  Why not stick to them?

Do you want her to run??? (0.00 / 0)
If she is looking at needing $2 million and not having a bunch of ways to come up with it, then reminding her that she is going to NEED $2 million is certainly fair.  Pointing out that she may not be as "independent" as she likes to portray herself if she manages to get the $2 million because of what she has to promise to get it is also certainly fair.  Regarding policy differences, trying a repeat of the Dennison campaign before she makes any policy pronouncements just isn't smart.

i think there's probably gonna be a GOPrimary for this one.

which would be when?  this coming summer?  so there won't be too much time to dilly dally

But to answer rachelsdad's question, it's hard to know too much about Diane Allen's record.  She flies below the radar, doesnt debate, doesn't engage with the "other side" very much.

So unless the topic is money, she's mum.  money is  what predicated the nasty spat among the GOP in NJ-3.  (For those of you who don't know, she wrote a scathing note regarding money she'd been promised (?) and it went public.)  And no,  Allen is not the only politician who postures like this, i'll concede that.  The letter went public and cast her in a greedy and/or lazy light.  (maybe she should be more discreet with her corresoondence and if not, then she should be prepared to face the PR hit.)

Fast forward to Saxton's announcement last week and Diane's name is on the short list to replace him on the ticket.  And her only rhuminations thus far are all money-related. Again.

Certainly, not the concerns or the 3rd district.

Again, it's ONLY about how much money can diane allen get to play election.  Surely if she had higher ambitions she's have a nice fat PAC already. The rumors surrounding saxton's retirement have been swirling for ages.  And if she hadn't planned for that contingency, then it wouldnt speak very well for her strategic sensibilities, would it?

I want a representative in Congress who's willing to bust his/her ass to get the nod.  Thus far Diane Allen's behavior suggests that she's not the mold of character that's willing to WORK HARD and DIG DEEP to get the job done.

In stead, she's the type of follower who looks around to gauge the "proper" response by how much of the hard part she WONT have to do herself.

which IMHO is really really lame.
