zomg! He's GAY!!

by: Juan Melli

Tue Oct 30, 2007 at 12:43:47 AM EDT

Every once in a while it's good to be reminded that even in Blue Jersey, bigots still have a right to make a public mockery of themselves. Proving bigotry knows no racial boundaries, the latest example is 15th district Republican Assembly candidate Sylvester Bobby Bryant. He ran this ad in the Trenton Times (A7) on Saturday:

Sylvester Bryant Newspaper Ad

What a crackpot. An "admitted homosexual"? That's kind of revealing language. It's suggesting he knows that people are in fact gay, but that they should remain in the closet so as to not burst his bubble of denial.

Usually people get nasty and fiercely negative in campaigns when there's a really close race. This guy doesn't have a prayer, yet he's blowing his meager campaign funds on truly hateful ads. I don't understand some people's need to so forcefully prove their anti-gay creds to the world, and I'm kind of glad I don't.

The password is "gay" (0.00 / 0)
Juan et al: Here's a helpful hint if you're wondering where someone really stands on lesbian-gay-bi-trans-intersexed issues: does the commentator in question refer to people as "homosexuals?" It's kinda like clinging to "Negro" here in the 21st century - if you can't say gay, and you can't use the word you really want to use 'cause it's liable to out you as a 'phobe, find another subject to perseverate upon.

I love that equation, "If more of you homosexuals would marry, then maybe WE would listen to you ... but who be this we, Kemosabe? I don't need to do anything to earn anyone's approval of my right to equal justice - it's a self-evident truth, n'est-ce pas? What I need is for the people who have denied me my rights to stop doing so.

Props to Reed for all he's done, and I hope we see his new 100% marriage equality bill real soon. It may not go this distance this year, or next year, but it will go sooner than Sylvester Bobby Bryant would like ... his address shows him right down the street from where a 14-year-old boy was stabbed to death in a street altercation even as anti-marriage foes gathered on the steps of the state house a week or two ago. It's good to see the Republicans of The City of Trenton (both of them) have their priorities in order ...

Wanna hear the kicker? (4.00 / 5)
This bigot was Tom Kean Sr.'s director of civil rights.  From the November 30, 1984 NY Times:

Sylvester Bobby Bryant, director of the department's Division of Civil Rights, which conducted the inquiry, said some of the cases might be turned over to Federal prosecutors.

Unbelievable... (0.00 / 0)
.....my first impression was that anyone so out of touch with reality was a minor kook.

Unless this is just someone who happens the same name, it seems that the Republican party has employed Mr Bryant in the position most unsuitable for a bigot.

Maybe he's also related to Anita Bryant?  Or manybe he has a J Edgar Hoover complex?

Or just maybe he's just a desperate calculating sleaze who's trying to exploit extant homophobia?

Maybe Jay can arrange an interview with this "candidate"; the more light shed on this kind of "stuff", the better.

I love this week (0.00 / 0)
The week leading up to Election Day has to be one of the most entertaining weeks in the calendar.  All of the crazies start spending their campaign funds.

The difference between fiction and reality (0.00 / 0)
... is that fiction has to be believable. Thanks, huntsu - that really IS the kicker, innit?

I know this guy's name vaguely - I'm sure he's connected in the local church and civic community. Clearly there is a deliberate push against gay people taking place right now in the in the churches, being led by Tomicki and Deo, and this Brian Brown / CSA invasion is likely to be somehow connected. I don't find any of this, three weeks before the election, to be coincidental, but that's just my antennae quivering, I have no facts. But it all just stinks of the usual Rovian stage legerdemain - distract 'em with something sparkly and some snappy patter (homosexuals are gonna MARRY in YOUR CHURCH - the Governor is gonna SELL your TURNPIKE) while you herd them into the chutes ...

Agree with Dennis:
Brian Brown is connected with Deo, etc.  They are contacting churches to get involved with their "defense of marriage" campaign.

Disagree with Dennis:
It is going to be virtually impossible to have a successful push for marriage equality if very few couples (relatively) have already done civil unions.  The low rate of utilization really needs to be investigated and not sloughed off.  It may be "irrelevant" to those who are already convinced, but you aren't going to move legislators off the fence if there aren't even 10,000 civil unions.

Will Sylvester still approve of me? (0.00 / 0)
Even though I have a hetero-man crush on Bruce Springsteen I am an admitted heterosexual.

Does this still pass muster, Sylvester?

ZOMG (4.00 / 1)
ZOMG (sometimes OMGZ) - A variation of OMG (Oh My God /Gosh) used to indicate extreme excitement

ZOMGWTFBBQ - A variation of ZOMG and OMG, also used to indicate an extremely surprising and exciting event

So that explains the bumperstickers I keep seeing. (4.00 / 3)
