Shulman Hits Garrett on SCHIP; Announces Advisory Committee Chair

by: Juan Melli

Wed Oct 03, 2007 at 04:10:27 PM EDT

5th district Congressional Democratic primary candidate Dennis Shulman blasted Congressman Garrett over his heartless vote against SCHIP:
"We certainly can do better than this. For God's sake, we're talking about sick children, and this is America. It is time for Scott Garrett to reconsider his opposition to this critical legislation and spend some time defending children's health, instead of his record of failed policies."
The campaign also announced the endorsement of former Sussex County Democratic chairman and freeholder Howard Burrell who will chair Shulman's political advisory committee.

Update: On her blog, Democratic primary candidate Camille Abate says Garrett has "blood on his hands":

Garrett used to be a lawyer for the insurance companies. They've been his bread and butter all his life. And you can see they're still his buddies, no matter what the consequences. As long as there's a dollar to be given, Mr. Garrett will see that it's given to them.

Garrett's vote will assure that President Bush's veto of the SCHIP legislation stands. If Bush's veto prevails, then for every child that dies as a result of not being insured, Scott Garrett shares the blood on his hands.

challenge (2.50 / 2)
Can I just say that I'm really happy somebody is challenging Camille Abate?  She is way too far to the left to be thinking about running in this district.  Kudos to Burrell for his endorsement.  What a wonderful chairman he will make for that campaign.

I don't think Left-Right is the problem (1.00 / 1)
Camille's issue is not that she is too far left, but too far out.

Why bother, Guys? (2.00 / 1)
I think I have to agree with you geniuses on this one.  The rabbi is a much more appropriate Democratic candidate than Camille in that his candidacy gives us YET ANOTHER chance to prove that democrats would much rather lose on principle (running a blind rabbi for God sakes) than bust our ass to do the hard work it takes to win.

Garrett is vulnerable, but, face it, this district won't elect a blind rabbi....maybe no district would.

Your pithy criticisms of Abate just don't jibe with what I've read on her site.  You should go back and re-read what's there.  Just skip over the big words, Fellas, if they make you mad.

Hey...if you reply to this maybe you'll do us a favor and be a little specific about what it is that you don't like about Abate or about what you do like about Shulman.  That might help those of us who are actually trying to understand this.

Why do you assume (0.00 / 0)
that a graduate of Brandeis and Harvard and a rabbinical college, who has both been a practicing psychologist and a religious leader in his community for many years, is incapable of the "ass busting" required to win an election? How much effort do you suppose it took Dennis Shulman to accomplish all that he has in this life? If he were fully sighted that would be a resume most people would envy.

I know nothing of Camille, I know nothing of Dennis, other than what I have read of each on their websites, but your dismissal of Dennis Shulman as nothing but a "blind rabbi" is as much an ad hominen attack as any that has been made on Camille Abate.

Not Attacking Shulman (0.00 / 0)
No....my saying that this district won't elect a blind rabbi was not an attack.  Shulman is obviously well-educated and accompished, and for anything I know to the contrary he's a prince among men.  And obviously I wasn't saying that he wouldn't bust his ass to win, but I am saying that Democrats make a lot of bad choices and we're drawn to "Cause" type candidates often at the expense of our own best interests. To wit - removing Garrett.

My pithy criticisms (0.00 / 0)
My pithy criticisms of Abate are very straightforward.  I found it incredibly distasteful last year when she protested the war at a West Point graduation ceremony.  There is a time and a place for a protest and she had both of them wrong.  Protest in front of the White House, not in front of graduates who are going off to war.  I am 100% against the war, but I also have friends at West Point and they were pretty hurt by it.

I didn't like how she didn't rally behind the winner of the primary last year, regardless of who won, a Democrat is a Democrat and will do better than Garrett in office and shows how little she actually cares about the party winning.

This is not to mention how pie in the sky I think her education plan is.  There are better and more effective ways of rebuilding education.  Does she even know how much her plan would cost?

I can read big words thank you very much, although I don't know where I found the time to read her positions on her website.

Camille's web site is one thing ... (0.00 / 0)
but they way she communicates with people who disagree with her or decide not to support her is not only off-putting but it is quite often rude.

When she first talked about running two years ago she was abusive, arrogant and divisive -- with Democrats and progressives!

Sure, you can take it to the other team as hard as you want but insulting the people whose help you need is just bad judgment.

Maybe her website is good, but as someone who watched her first attempt I can tell you I would never support Camille for any office.  I don't think she has it in her to be anything but 100% right, even when she's wrong.

And there's no need to be insulting (0.00 / 0)
This is your first post (at least under this name) and already you are insulting right out of the shoot.

Just skip over the big words, Fellas, if they make you mad.

Calling us stupid isn't a real good way to win people over to Camille's side.  You are following a long-trodden path of Camille supporters who come here, insult people, go into instant attack mode and then wonder why so few support Camille.
