The NJ-39 Series: meet Joe Ariyan

-  By Stephen Yellin

In my last two articles on New Jersey's 39th Legislative District, I discussed why the Republican incumbent, Gerald "Gerry" Cardinale was too extreme to represent a rapidly changing district (towards the left, I might add), and why it's time to fire him. Today, I want to introduce you all to his Democratic opponent, and why he should be hired to serve in the New Jersey State Senate. His name is Joe Ariyan, and he'll be an excellent State Senator for New Jersey. His life and credentials will tell you why.

Stephen Yellin :: The NJ-39 Series: meet Joe Ariyan
Joe is a 1st-generation American; his family is Armenian in origin, and came to settle in New Jersey. Even as a child, his parents instilled in him the ideas of community service, progressive values and a commitment to social justice that he has followed all his life. In 1977, he and his family joined the march in Washington, DC in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Joe was just 9 years old at the time. Needless to say, a moving experience at that age can inspire anyone to get involved in public life; it certainly proved so for Joe Ariyan.

Joe graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1990, and along the way chose to become an attorney, specializing in insurance policies. While earning his law degree, he helped citizens who were having trouble filing tax returns through volunteer work. After marrying his wife Susan, he moved to Saddle River in 1995 and became a practicing attorney. In 2000 he co-founded his own law firm (Ariyan, Khoury and Schildiner LLP, located in Hackensack), and shortly after began to get involved in local politics.

In 2004, Joe was appointed by Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney as the county's first Public Advocate for Land Use. Joe's responsibility is to help prevent and turn back the encroachment of businesses and developers on open space in the suburbs - the political buzzword for this is "Suburban Sprawl". This process has been going on for decades, but is now being targeted as a problem to be fixed by both taxpayers and politicians alike. Part of Joe's job involves working with the individual municipalities in Bergen County to protest Suburban Sprawl actions in the county, and to block through litigation any unlawful or unnecessary development. Here's an example from last week of what Joe's work entails:

MAHWAH - Pilot Corporation is back.
The fuel and truck stop company is seeking to redevelop its Route 17 location into a gas station and convenience store -- a twist on the expansive truck stop plans rejected by the zoning board in January.
Gone are the showers, game room and laundry facilities. There will be no truck scale or overnight parking.

But those opposed to the application say six diesel fuel pumps and 10 tractor-trailer parking spots are enough to make it a bad neighbor for the township's four schools a few hundred feet away on Ridge Road.
Pilot, which signed a 20-year lease on the property in 2006, is still appealing the decision on its earlier application...

"This is very disappointing," said Joe Ariyan, Bergen County public advocate for land use. "The fact [is] that Pilot knows how the town's people feel, yet it is still pushing" a plan to redevelop the site....

The state Department of Environmental Protection, meanwhile, is in the midst of an air-quality analysis to determine the impact of truck stops on residents and schools, said spokeswoman Karen Hershey.

The data collected, including information on the number of trucks and how long they idle, will be used to create a computer-generated model to determine whether there are air-quality impacts, Hershey said.
"The modeling analysis will focus on existing activities," she said, adding that it is unclear when the study will conclude. "This is the first truck-stop modeling analysis we've done."

Joe used his position as Public Advocate to block the proposal the first time around, and now (as the public is again concerned with the company's plan) is prepared to block it again, either through the courts or through negotiation. This is but one example of what he's been doing in the last three years to help Bergen County residents.

In addition to his job as Public Advocate, Joe serves in a few other capacities; he works as Public Defender for the borough of Hillsdale and is a Commissioner on the Board of Public Utilities (which deals with water and electricity safety issues for Bergen County). In both capacities, whether it's ensuring that justice is served or that Bergen County residents receive goods and services in good condition, Joe has been fulfilling his dreams of public service.

Now Joe is running for the State Senate in 2007, in order to take what he's done so far and use his expertise for the benefit of New Jersey. Like many New Jerseyans, Joe is pro-choice, fully supports stem-cell research and wants to cut property taxes. While some of his positions are more moderate (he supports the death penalty, for example), they also fit in with his constituents; NJ-39 is moving to the left, but it is still very much a "purple" district in ideology. And such a district  is winnable for a socially progressive, fiscally responsible Democrat like Joe. Huh? You make it sound like he doesn't have a chance.

Already, Gerry Cardinale is running attack ads against Joe and his running mates, Esther Fletcher and Carl Manna (you can find out more about all three of them at http://www.voicefor3...). It's a sign of both how desperate Cardinale is to save his seat, and how bloody the General election will be. You'll probably hear a lot of nasty things about both Joe and his running mates from the GOP before all is done - believe me, don't believe a word of it. Joe, Esther and Carl will be impartial, fair and strong leaders for the 39th, and will help the Democratic Party bring greater reforms to the state of New Jersey starting in 2008. Hopefully, you'll come along with them for the ride.

LD 39 (1.00 / 3)
While ousting Cardinale would be great, I have extreme reservations about replacing him with a Ferriero-annointed Democrat.  Ferriero's cronies are pro-development and beholden to the political boss.  While it would be no great loss if Cardinale were replaced--his pathetic record speaks for itself--I would think twice about trying to oust Rooney and Vandervalk.  Both have been endorsed by the Sierra Club for their support of environmental issues.  Vandervalk is pro-choice and even  supported civil unions.  Since the Dems already have solid control of the Assembly, I see no reason to try to oust the two of them and replacing them with Ferriero's people.

Concerned about Ferriero's Cronies (1.00 / 3)
I agree with the concern for the potential replacement of the LD39 Republicans with Joe Ferriero cronies. The three Democratic candidates are pure Ferrierocrats and that should worry a lot of people.

I realize that three Democrats are ideologically a much better alternative than any three Republicans but Ferriero's breed of Democrat is another animal altogether. If the Ferriero team wins this district, look for the possibility of much plundering of land, even more insider deals and the institution of pay-to-play as standard operating procedure to a degree never before imagined.

The shame of it all is that Ariyan, Fletcher and Manna are very good people and great local officials. But they are handpicked and owned by Boss Ferriero and they've done nothing to prove otherwise.

Uh... so which is it, exactly?  I think as we just saw in the LD-38 race, with the promotion of Bob Gordon to the Senate, having the backing of the BCDO doesn't make anyone a party hack by default. These candidates have the backing of a broad swath of Democrats, from Ferriero to Weinberg and everyone in between. What is the "pure Ferrierocrat" charge based on? You need to actually support assertions like that in order for them to be credible.

Between this and your Chris Christie fandom, I wonder why this site appeals to you at all.

Let's get to the Facts, Mr. Shields (1.50 / 2)
1. As I said many times, Bob Gordon is a good legislator but when Ferriero called his people to get behind the Wildes/Zisa team in LD37, there stood Bob Gordon, right in line behind the chairman. He never said a word in defense of truth and honor. He just said, "whatever you wish, Mr. Chairman.".

2. Esther Fletcher recently refused to criticize the Dennis Oury quest to file a lawsuit to stop pay-to-play. She was asked about her position on pay-to-play. She would not criticize the chairman's lawsuit. Period. Still waiting for her to speak out.

3. Carl Manna is a stooge of Dumont Mayor Matt McHale. McHale was sworn into office by Joe Ferriero. He is a former Executive Director of BCDO who has sworn allegiance to all things Ferriero. He worked hard for Ferriero and Zisa at the special county committee election to replace Sen Baer, which Loretta Weinberg won. He was also placed by Ferriero himself to serve in the Bergen County Executive's office as Chief of Staff. For one purpose: to be the eyes and ears of the Boss. McHale, of course, controls Manna.

4. Ariyan got his jobs in the county (public advocate for land use and commissioner at Northwest Utilities Authority) through Joe Ferriero and Dennis Oury. If you think he got them any other way, I have some swamp land for you in Boise. Make no mistake. He owes them.

Having said that, I also know that individually the candidates are good people. They are well liked within their communities. But it's the fact that they don't stand up to the stench that comes out of BCDO and the Ferriero machinery that frustrates the rest of us in the county who are revolted by the Bosses' ways and means.

Perhaps unlike you, I am committed to promoting and encouraging government/political Reform. I deplore the dishonesty and corruption (legalized or otherwise) that exists within our system. My anger at the state's status quo burns deep. I want to rip out the current system and fix it until we get it right.

And I could give a rat's @#% if the corruption comes from Democrats or Republicans. I want the bad guys who break both the public's trust and the law swept out and taken away. There's nothing wrong with some good old fashioned law and order to keep the fox out of the public henhouses.

"Evil triumphs when good men do nothing". I appreciate all that U.S. Attorney Chris Christie has done for our state. He has my gratitude for his fearlessness in the face of the power of unrestrained corruption.

You ask why this site appeals to me? Well, probably because I believe in universal health care for all. I believe in equal rights for the LGBT community, including marriage equality. I believe in a fair tax policy that does not protect the rich at the expense of the poor. I believe in programs that feed the hungry and house the homeless. I believe in the care and love of the developmentally disabled and the infirm. I believe in racial and ethnic equality and abhor all prejudice. I believe that women are not represented at the proportion of their numbers. And I believe in a lot of other things that you probably believe in too.

I love my country and I love my state. I won't cede the flag to conservative Republicans because I am an American too.

Although you can be sure that I am not a pacifist and I am willing to fight terrorism, I have always believed the Iraq war to be the most senseless military action since Vietnam, borne out of ignorance and fear without any shred of political intelligence behind it. The national Republican party is one of intolerance and economic destruction. It's a disgrace. The country will not survive if they stay in charge much longer.

If I had my druthers, Howard Dean would have been the 2004 Democratic Presidential nominee. If so, we may not have found ourselves in the mess we're in today. I clearly remember that he was one of the very first national leaders to call for a troop withdrawal from Iraq long before that position became politically correct.

So Mr. Shields, this is why the site appeals to me.

Check your GOP talking points (4.00 / 2)
Okay, first of all, can no one ever again call me Mr. Shields? Please? For pete's sake, it's not "respectful," it's dumb and insulting and condescending. You're not my teacher in history class (thank god), so don't speak to me like a damn child.

Let's take this point by point:

1. I don't really give a crap if people get involved in BS in-fighting or not. I care about progressive legislation. Loretta Weinberg is a solid progressive Senator who I back 120% and Bob Gordon will be a great colleague for her.

2. Don't know if you heard, but the lawsuit isn't moving forward because of public and private pressure from progressive Democrats who thought it was insane. What, exactly, is there to comment on? Where did you find this information, anyway? I can't seem to find it anywhere in the press.

3. Wow, what an amazing piece of work you produced there. You claim, with no direct evidence, that Manna is tied to McHale and then you proceed to talk about what "he" has done. You deliberately left McHale's name out to make it look like you're referring to Manna. Shame on you for that.

4. You are certainly entitled to that unverifiable opinion. Funny that it dovetails perfectly with campaign ads currently being run by the GOP, though, huh? Nothing I've seen about Ariyan's record indicates anything other than that he's done a great job, so until I see otherwise...

Look, I don't know if you're a Republican concern troll or just an honest to goodness progressive who doesn't necessarily care about electing Democrats, but not everything in this state, or even Bergen County, is a proxy battle in a war between two sides. Why on Earth are you coming here and arguing against the election of Democrats you say "are good people" and "well liked within their communities"? It makes no damn sense to me.

These are people who, if elected, will knock out some of the most despicable, hate-mongering members of the New Jersey legislature. For all of the things you just said you believe, I find it hard to swallow that you cannot bring yourself to support their election. It's sad and short-sighted. Back them now. If your worst fears are realized once they're in the legislature, primary them. But give them a chance beyond your assumptions.

Most despicable, hate-mongering members of the New Jersey legislature??? (0.00 / 0)
That statement is certainly true about Gerry Cardinale, but Charlotte Vandervalk???  Blind party affiliation does not do the progressive movement any good.  Local and county races are a whole different animal.  You have to pay attention not to whether they have a D or an R after their names but where they stand on the issues.  Cardinale is rotten to the core.  If a Ferriero-crat replaces him, good riddance.  Rooney, while not good on social issues such as choice and LGBT rights has a strong environmental record.  Vandervalk on the other hand is good on both LGBT rights and the environment.  I would think twice before wanting her replaced with someone that will vote the Ferriero line every time.

I don't understand (4.00 / 2)
For one thing on Rooney and Vandervalk, they chose to be on the same ticket as Cardinale, so in essence, they are in concordance with the senator on certain issues.  Furthermore, what I don't understand is why any politician who works in Bergen County is either pro-Ferriero or pro-Weinberg.  The endless bickering is pathetic and weakens the party and undermines any effort to run against Republicans.  I am sick to death of constantly hearing about who or who isn't a "Ferrieirocrat."  There is something to be said about being a D or an R and that is loyalty and attacking fellow party members is both sickening and pathetic to say the least.

Ideological Purity (4.00 / 1)
Ideological purity is harmful to the cause.  I am sorry that some folks like to disect law makers and party leaders based on their "boutique" issues.  (I am not saying your concerns are not important, just that you are missing out on the big picture by focusing on pet issues) If we elect as many democrats as possible who will vote properly 9 times out of 10, obviously, more good will be done than if those seats were occupied by republicans.  I hate that I have to spell this out.  The goal in politics is accomplishing our agenda.  The big picture in the long run should be the prize we keep our eyes on.  Divisions within the party, whether they are based on leadership or ideology are fine during primary season but at the end of the day we want more Democrats in government.  For instance, I support barack Obama for president.  I really do not have much love for Senator Clinton.  I will do whatever I can to keep her from being the nominee but if she is the nominee, I will do whatever I can to elect her.  Why?  Because she is a Democrat and will do a better job than a republican.  Bottom line.

"That we accept the world as it is does not in any sense weaken our desire to change it into what we believe it should be-it is necessary to begin where the world is if we are going to change it to what we think it should be." -Saul Alinsky
