New Challenge to Garrett in NJ-5

by: Jay Lassiter

Tue Sep 18, 2007 at 09:36:22 AM EDT

( - promoted by Juan Melli)

Dr. Dennis Shulman has announced his intention to make a run for Congress in NJ's 5th Congressional district.  Shulman's entry would ensure a strangely fascinating Democratic primary in the 'o8 cycle since Camille Abate already threw her hat in the ring.

Taking on Garrett is a longshot, we all know that, but Shulman (who's also a Rabbi) adds a much needed dose of "common sense religious left sensibility" to the election year debate in NJ-5.  After all, Garrett is widely regarded as the most extreme ideologue in the NJ Congressional delegation, making Saxton, Ferguson, et al look like choirboys.  Taking Scott Garrett on is gonna be a huge challenge.

Dennis Shulman has faced challenges before.  It just so happens that he's blind.  But it didn't stop him from grabbing a Harvard sheepskin and going on to become a religious leader.  The blind thing is a small part of the overall narraitive, but a it's still worth noting that a Shulman victory would be history-making.  There's never been a blind member of the House of Representatives.  (It's weird, so often we think of diversity in Congress as a gender or race thing.  There aren't a lot of faces from the disability community serving on That Hill.  Can you think of any?)

We have fourteen months to see how this plays out.

Note: I invited Dr. Shulman to a podcast and if he accepts, then ya'll will be the first to know.

I'm intrigued ...

If there's something Congress can use more of... (4.00 / 1)
...it's lefty Harvard grads.  New Jersey could be doing our fair share by sending Shulman AND Adler to Washington next year.

disability community on the hill (0.00 / 0)
Max Cleland, John Murtha, John McCain, Bob Dole. Strom Thurmond (okay, I'm being a smart alec, but still - who better to represent senile Americans?). Hmmm ... Patrick Kennedy. I'm sure there are more, but at no one time has there ever been a representative sample of representatives and senators struggling with the same sets of health and physical problems that would face any truly representative sample of Americans. Y'know, it is good to be a rich white guy with a college education in America ... let's hope Hillary's (or whoever's) healthcare plan goes a long way to level that particular field. It is one more thing to like about this rabbi/psychologist - wow, is that a different worldview than what usually gets sent to the hill! I'm a long way from endorsing Dr. Shulman, but he has got to pique any bluejerseyan's interest!

Looking Forward to the Conversation (4.00 / 3)
Jay and Blue Jersey,
Thank you for introducing me as a candidate for NJ District Five to your readers. I have been a consistent reader of your blog and now I look
forward to active conversations with other readers.
And Jay, of course, I accept the invitation to do the Blue Jersey podcast. Just tell me when, and I'm
there.
  Dennis Shulman
