Lynne Hurwitz - Woman of Many Talents

by: carolh

Wed Sep 12, 2007 at 08:41:38 AM EDT

( - promoted by Juan Melli)

I am shocked - shocked! - to learn that another Ferriero apologist is on the county payroll. Promoted from the diaries -- Juan

I had to laugh when I read that Lynne Hurwitz, the Municipal Democratic Chair of Hackensack, felt intimidated by a bunch of rank and file Bergen County Committee Democrats who are tired of being ignored and their activist friends from Democracy for America and NJ for Democracy:

Those opposed to the planned suit will be able to register their vote when the county committee meets. Or, said Hackensack Democratic Chairwoman Lynne Hurwitz, they could find time to schedule a private, diplomatic meeting with Ferriero.

"I've never known him not to want to sit down and discuss things," Hurwitz said. "The desire to bring it out on the street only tells me that they want a raucous confrontation and to embarrass the party."

But lets dig deeper, shall we?  Who exactly is Ms. Hurwitz and what job does she have at the county level?  She is Bergen County Deputy Chief of Staff. So, she is basically Ferriero's Karl Rove in the Bergen County Government.  And I wonder if she has family working for Bergen County as well......  Why, yes she does!  Husband Howie is Executive Director of the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority - a group that handles collective bargaining contracts with the employees union.

Combined, Lynne and Howie make over six figures and are involved in who to hire in Bergen County and what to pay them.  Now, if I was Chris Christie trying to figure out just exactly how all those Democratic County Committee Municipal Chairs wind up with County jobs, I might decide to ask Ms. Hurwitz a few questions.  But I'm not, so I'll leave my little thought experiment here.

Tenafly Councilmember Carol Hoernlein - me thinks thou complains to much (0.00 / 0)
Who is Carol H? She is someone who was appointed to Tenafly Council
after one of  the infamous "Tenafly 5" refused to step down after he was
picked up for buying heroin in Newark.  The Tenafly committee and CarolH
didnt even bother calling for him to resign and Joe Ferrerio to his
credit never "bullied" him to resign as Carol loves to accuse him of
doing. Instead CarolH and her people let him embarrass the taxpayers of
Tenafly instead. Where was Carol and the Lorretta-ites on that one? Same
place they are on Assemvlymember Johnsons dual office holding.

Carol should stop bashing Democrats who built the party over the last
40 years. While its great that Carol has decided to get involved
recently in politics -which means posting embarrassing comments as an elected
official - she has done nothing to help Joe Ferrerio and the Democrats
do anything to take back the county from the Republicans over the
years.  Carol has never campaigned with anyone of  the freeholders (numerous
women) or county officials. BTW- campaigning in gerrymandered Dist 37
as a Dem. is a walk in the park-so don't throw that excuse)

Carol has done nothing to even get a Democrat in for Mayor in Tenafly.
Carol has done nothing to even to support Gov Corzines/NJ Transit/Sen
Weinbergs/Assemblymembers Huttle and Johnsons inititative to bring very
much needed rail service back to downtown Tenafly. Carol believes that
only she has all the answers to Rail and MSG and pay-to-play. NJ
Transit must be part of the pay-to-play monster as well. Its great she waste
time here because Tenafly is the only town that will not get rail
service now on the northern line because of her constant criticisms and lack
  of action.

Carol is really embarassing the taxpayers of Tenafly with her comments.
Also for Carol to attack Lynn Hurwitz is really showing ignorance.
Yes she works in county government and more importantly she supports
Democratic values to the bone. Who else should be in a Democratic
administration? Carols republican county engineer friends that support the war
in Iraq? As for Howie, bashing him and his 40 years of being a civil
engineer is pathetic and really an embarrassment.

Check here on WikiPedia for the story of the last election where I was elected into office with the most votes of the 4 candidates running for the 3 year terms.  We Beat 2 incumbent Republicans.

http://en.wikipedia....

As you can see, I was not appointed to the Council.  I was elected.

Ms Hurwitz's dictated response (she is no blogger) just goes south from there.  Not even getting the big things true let alone the little things.

I was the first one to call for Romano's resignation from the Council and the County Committee.  In protest I did not even attend his swearing in.  When offered his help and his money for my campaign, I and my running mate refused any help from Romano, financial or otherwise.  When he finally did plead guilty after months of proclaiming his innocence, the Tenafly  Municipal Committee privately asked him to step down.  He refused.

Implying that because I was from the same town and party as someone with a substance abuse problem, that I was somehow complicit in his guilt is offensive on many levels.  Just because Ms. Hurwitz worked closely with Bob Torricelli for years doesn't mean she is as guilty as he was.

When have I EVER mentioned that Ferriero "bullied" Romano? Why would I?

As for Gordon Johnson and dual office holding.  Gordon Johnson was already an Assemblyman.  He only stepped up to run for Councilman at large due to the incredible corruption problems rampant in Englewood at the time.  The City needed an honest man to help deal with a lot of the problems at a critical moment.  Gordon Johnson took over the role of Councilman in Englewood as an act of selflessness at a time when he didn't need to deal with the nonsense of Mayor Michael Wildes disbanding the Planning Board and other things that caused the creation of the Englewood Report.  He would rather have just stayed an Assemblyman, but at the time, Englewood was in need of his experience and integrity.  It was just hard for him to see the City in the situation it was in and not help out.  It was altruism that made Gordon Johnson run for Council AFTER being an Assemblyman, not greed.  If he was driven by greed he would have taken the job offered to him as a bribe to drop out of the Assembly race.  He is a good man who would rather not hold two offices right now.

I not only canvassed for Howard Dean - in New Hampshire, I canvassed for John Kerry and the Bergen County Democrats in Tenafly - with Jenn of the BCDO helping us. I helped organize the canvassing in town even though I could not get folks to do it because they hated Chairman Ferriero and did not want to carry BCDO literature.  Walking Tenafly is no easy task - it's mostly hills.  I canvassed with Shama Haider who was running for Mayor of Tenafly then.  The same person who would ask me to run for council only two years later.

I attended the Tenafly Rail meeting sponsored by Senator Weinberg in Tenafly - I am not on the passenger rail commiitee, but I did attend the meeting and can prove it - I am quoted in the local paper when I got up to speak on behalf of my constituents in favor of Light Rail.  I was appalled at the Engineer from the County who basically told us it was a done deal - we would only be getting diesel or nothing.  What is your connection to him Ms. Hurwitz?  Why the fait accompli?  What the hurry?  We've waited DECADES already.  Hudson-Bergen lightrail - what a joke.  We were outright lied to about the Northern Branch.  Why?

I have only gotten calls thanking me since being in office.  I am on the planning board, fire department, building department and historic preservation commission.  I came up with the first real solution for fixing the Floor Area Ratio ordinance in 20 years, in addition to getting a new soil moving ordinance passed by the planning board.  You can say I haven't helped anyone, but I even gained the respect of Republicans here in town in only 8 months in office.

I did not attack Ms. Hurwitz.  I simply pointed out that she is clearly a poiltical ally of Joe Ferriero and that she and her husband hold powerful positions in Bergen County Government - positions for influencing the hiring other Bergen County Employees.  If I wanted to be mean I really could have pointed out that she also worked for Ken Zisa when he was in the Assembly, and that she has very close ties to Bob Toricelli.  But I didn't do that, did I?

As for my Republican County Engineer friends.  Huh?  I grew up knowing Ed Ranuska who never declared a political affilation and therefore was able to serve the County proudly for 30 years continuously.  He was free to practice engineering and not worry about the nonsense Ms. Hurwitz espouses.

None of my friends support the war in Iraq, and the engineers I know  either don't tell me their affiliation or they are Democrats.

How is telling someone where Mr. Hurwitz works "bashing" him?  Is it simply because you don't want anyone to know just how influential the Hurwitz positions are and that Ms. Hurwitz is on the side of Joe Ferriero and that she believes in Pay To Play with all her heart?

Why don't you tell us how she uses Pay to Play in her daily job. It'll be like Show and Tell.  Come on. I'll bring the popcorn.  It'll be great!

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
