Labor Day, South Jersey Edition

If you're loving this supersized three-day weekend, you know who to thank: Union Labor.  That's what I did this morning at the South Jersey AFL-CIO's scholarship breakfast held on board the venerable Battleship NJ at the Camden waterfront.

In addition to Governor Corzine, it was a who's who of South Jersey democratic politics: Adler, Andrews, Roberts, Sweeney, among others.  But the highlight of the morning was the presentation of twenty-nine scholarships to college students with a Union affiliation.

As I watched the twenty-nine of 'em walk up to receive their $1ooo (each) award, I was reminded just how far the Labor movement has come since that first Labor Day back in the 1880's when the fight was for the very basics. Like working conditions that didn't jeopardize life and limb.

Anyway today's event was named in honor of Peter J. McGuire, the patriarch of Labor Day who also founded the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

(I just read his story and it's a fascinating tutorial about the early history of the Labor movement.  He was laid to rest in Pennsauken so the local connection is a strong one.)

Today was not without some controversy, but hopefully even the protesters got to take a tour of the Battleship, which now serves as a floating museum.  And forgive the shameless plug, but the Battleship NJ tour was awesome.  If you ever get the chance, you must check it out.  Come for the history, come for the view of Philly, come for the flight simulator!

Follow the flip for some of today's pics, including that flight simulator I just mentioned.

CWA 1032 Embarrassed Themselves (4.00 / 1)
As a member of a State Worker Union who attended this Labor Day Memorial event I was disgusted with the behavior of these "phony" union members from CWA 1032 who were led by Jim Marketti. This is  an event that is held every year to provide Scholarship money and honor the working men and woman of the area.

These " activists " showed up in a bus with the sole purpose of promoting their own agenda and disrupting an annual event that brings all union people together before the holiday. They never participated in the event before today nor have they ever donated one dime to the scholarship funds.

These are  State worker union drones who are only concerned about themselves. CWA continues to show that it is a misguided union that has lost touch with its membership and with the Union movement.

They did no good there today.

They made no friends.

They alienated themselves from their fellow Union Brothers and Sisters.

Yet if you talk to them they think they were " real Union trailblazers" .

CWA 1032 is an embarrassment.

Marketti , Dudley, and the rest of these selfservers should apologize to every Union member in attendance.

It was the wrong time and place to do what they did.

Shame on you 1032 and shame on you CWA.

You should diary more about this, as it's generating a lot of articles. Surely we would be interested to read about it.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time (0.00 / 0)
This was NOT a Corzine event. He was a guest at a Memorial/Scholarship Union event.

If CWA knew anything about the event ,or ever bothered to participate in anything that does not serve their own interest, they would never have did what they did today.

CWA made a lot of enemies with other Unions today.

Labor Day (0.00 / 0)
I hope you'll cover Labor Day in North Jersey--Sunday's parade in Paterson.  It begins at the Botto House/American Labor Museum in Haledon, goes through Paterson, and ends at the downtown museum.  I probably won't be there this year (logistical problems involving a visit from the grandkids) and I will miss the fun--the Solidarity Singers always ride on the Botto House float (singing all the way, of course).

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."  (Teddy Roosevelt)

CWA / Worried Only about themselves. (0.00 / 0)
The South Jersey Central Labor Council is the premier Labor Organization in South Jersey and maybe the State.

Over 500 Union Leaders come together under the leadership of Donald Norcross, James Kehoe, and Steve Sweeney each year to reunite the diverse members of Labor and present thousands of dollars of scholarship money to worthy young men and women.

They work hard to have this event each year and political leaders, as well as organizations like the United Way,  lend their support to the effort.

Governor Corzine has never missed this event.

Then today the CWA disgraced the event with a self serving political stunt to embarrass the Governor and the organizers of the event.

Shame , Shame , Shame on CWA.

CWA never lends a hand to any other Union in the State yet when they need something they expect every one to listen .

Their actions at this annual function will not be forgotten by the Union leaders in attendance.

The CWA State Worker Unions are  on the verge of ostracizing  themselves from the Union Family.

CWA 1032 was an uninvited guest to a celebration of Unionism and they disgraced themselves.

A letter of apology should go out to Donald Norcross and the Officers of the South Jersey Central Labor Council from CWA 1032 President Marketti and from the CWA National Leaders.
