10 Things You Didn't Know About Buffalo? Make That 11!

From the diaries -- Juan

Let the "Scarlet Fever" begin. Ugh. So Rutgers football opens its season today against the esteemed Buffalo University. It's wall-to-wall coverage on Nj.com, including a piece in the package called "Ten things you didn't know about Buffalo." Seeing that I had an interesting little tidbit of my own about Buffalo, I thought I'd check out the article and see if we both included it.

Guess what?

We didn't.

After discussing the team's lack of winning in reason #1, reason #5 is where it gets interesting for me.

"5. They don't back down. Instead of scheduling other bottom-of-the-barrel teams to increase their win total, the Bulls faced Auburn and Wisconsin last season and will play Rutgers and Penn State this year."

You know why?

Because they get paid cash money to play good teams and lose. It's a fact that Nj.com and all its affiliated papers would seemingly like to forget (maybe because they make $crill off of selling lame-ass Rutgers "magical season" books) -- Rutgers originally paid Buffalo $225,000 to play them last year. Buffalo backed out, largely because they run such racket on this shit that they had too many other big-walleted suitors. But they agreed to play this year, for only $25,000 more. So this game -- and likely win -- will cost those beloved Scarlet Knights $250,000.

Ah, ain't victory sweet. I'm sure some of those laid off profs and adjuncts without health insurance hangin' around the county clinic for meds think so.

Do you think Rutgers should in the habit of paying to play poor football teams?

wrong priorities (4.00 / 2)
Rutgers also wants to spend $86 million, plus get a $30 million grant from the state to expand the stadium because they have a waiting list of 6,000 who want season tickets. Why not let the market do its thing and raise the prices on season tickets? Maybe with the extra money raised they can bring back the other sports programs they cut.

This alum is embarrassed to see how backwards their priorities are. I hope the state doesn't for a minute consider granting the money for expanding the stadium while teachers and other programs are cut or underfunded. It's unthinkable.

...during my stint in Trenton last summer, i saw Rutgers student/athletes from (erstwhile) tennis, swimming, diving, and crew teams protesting to the legislature that their (less lucrative?) sports budgets were eliminated.  these were among the most memorable (and frankly, sad) encounters i had at the statehouse.  makes me a little melancholy just thinking about it.  that said, i still hope RU football kicks ass this year. they've paid too high a price to be medocre, IMHO.

It's the system (0.00 / 0)
Rutgers gets paid to go play everybody else as well.  Doesn't make it right, but that's the way it works.

is it? (0.00 / 0)
I'm not entirely sure about that. If that's the case, do you have the numbers?

From the NYT:

"When teams like Notre Dame and Michigan State play each other, little money is exchanged, as they are "paid" by playing at the other's home stadium the next year."

This would signal to me that many of the teams Rutgers plays, especially ones in its division, don't pay them. But I don't know for sure.

Yeah, I'm sure (0.00 / 0)
The whole article is about how out of conference game away teams get paid, and $250,000 seems like a bargain compared to some of those fees.

Notre Dame is an Indie, but it does have consistent opponents year in and year out.  Bigger schools usually work out a home and home arrangement.

RU only has four away games this year, and Army is the only out of conference one.

RU's budget should be public record, and while I'd be happy to look for it next week, if you want hard numbers now, look back to the years when Rutgers was a joke and they played a lot of away games.  There should be a receivable line somewhere.

They do swap a little bit of money for that, but not much.  Usually enough to cover travel expenses.

I lived out West for a while and I'm pretty sure read that Nebraska and Oklahoma did that too, years ago.  I think it may not be an uncommon nor a new practice.  Not saying it's right or wrong--
