Please Make Room for Al Gore on the Next Blue Jersey Straw Poll

by: Draft Gore NJ

Sun Aug 05, 2007 at 11:08:33 PM EDT

If Reed Gusciora has his way, Vice President Al Gore will be represented by a statewide slate of delegate/alternate candidates on New Jersey's February 5, 2008 Presidential primary election ballot whether he is actively running or not, because there is no reason that NJ's voters shouldn't have the opportunity to vote for Al Gore just because he has his priorities in order and has determined that saving the world from an environmental apocalypse is more important than running for President.

Draft Gore NJ has been launched to recruit supporters of Al Gore to run as Uncommitted delegate/alternate candidates in each of New Jersey's 20 delegate districts, who are committed to voting for Al Gore at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Draft Gore NJ :: Please Make Room for Al Gore on the Next Blue Jersey Straw Poll
We believe that this strategy is the best approach to working towards winning the Democratic Presidential nomination for Al Gore in 2008, because it can be implemented no matter what Al Gore decides to do.  If Al Gore announces that he is going to run for President, a campaign infrastructure will have already been established in the delegate districts where his committed delegates need to win on February 5, 2008 to be able to have the opportunity to nominate him in Denver.  If Al Gore announces that he is not going to run for President, his supporters in New Jersey can continue to work to elect the slate of Uncommitted delegates that we will build in the coming weeks.

Without Al Gore as a Presidential candidate, we believe that the dynamic amongst the current field of Democratic Presidential candidates has created the possibility that no single candidate will arrive at the 2008 Democratic National Convention with enough delegates to win the nomination on the first ballot. If that were to happen, a brokered convention would ensue with delegates freed from their original commitments and able to vote for any candidate who presents herself/himself and candidates and their surrogates working the convention floor to win the vote on subsequent ballots.

We believe that if the Draft Gore movement is able to elect a small number (50-100 out of over 4,000, which can be accomplished by winning 1-2 delegates per state) of uncommitted delegates, who are committed to voting for Al Gore at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, and the first ballot fails to produce a nominee, the Draft Gore delegation will be substantial enough to lead a Draft Gore effort from the floor of the convention and convert enough of the rest of the delegates to join us that Al Gore will emerge from this process as a consensus candidate.

We also believe that if the Draft Gore movement is able to elect a small number (50-100 out of over 4,000, which can be accomplished by winning 1-2 delegates per state) of uncommitted delegates, who are committed to voting for Al Gore at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, and the Draft Gore delegation is substantial enough to give one candidate enough delegates to win the nomination on the first ballot, the Draft Gore delegation would put Al Gore in a position to negotiate the terms by which it would help that candidate win the nomination.

While Uncommitted delegate/alternate candidates are unable to run on behalf of someone officially without their approval, there is a history in New Jersey of slates of Uncommitted candidates running on someone's behalf, utilizing slogans that make it clear to the voters who an Uncommitted delegate/alternate candidate is supporting.  As the Draft Gore NJ grassroots organization grows in the weeks to come, our ballot slogan will be announced.

If you are interested in joining this effort either as a prospective Uncommitted delegate/alternate candidate in your delegate district or as a leader of or volunteer for your delegate district's field organization, please feel free to visit the Draft Gore NJ website at your earliest convenience and use the form on the website to join our organization.

In the meantime, if you do not see Al Gore's name in the next Blue Jersey straw poll, please cast a vote for Other, write in Al Gore, and post a comment about why you are supporting the Draft Gore movement and why you believe that anybody for whom delegate/alternate candidates will be on the ballot in February's Presidential primary election.

Al Gore (4.00 / 1)
Al Gore is a fantasy candidate at this point. Unless he hints that he may run, it doesn't make sense to include him in a poll any more than it makes sense to include dozens of other people we may think would be good for the job.

The person you need to lobby is Al Gore, not Blue Jersey. He knows he could easily win the nomination if he were to enter the race and he still hasn't entered. That should tell us something. For now anyway, he ain't running.

different priorities (0.00 / 0)
Al Gore is clearly more interested in saving the world than running for President.

This doesn't change the fact that delegate/alternate candidates, possibly an entire statewide slate of them, who are committed to Gore are going to be on the ballot in February and could get elected.

While this scenario might be as much of a "fantasy" as Gore's candidacy at the moment, it is still much more than any other "fantasy" candidate that we may think would be good for the job.

Draft Gore NJ is taking this approach precisely because we don't want to wait for Al Gore to change his priorities nor do we necessarily believe that he should.

If Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama can win the Democratic nomination on the first ballot, so be it.  But if they can't, Draft Gore NJ wants to have delegates and alternates on the floor of the Democratic National Convention in a position to draft Al Gore from there.

This is an exercise in the potential of democracy and the democratic process.  We do not expect Blue Jersey to help us promote our effort for us, but it would be interesting to see how many Blue Jersey regulars would cast a vote for Al Gore in the straw poll if given the opportunity.

If supporters of John Kerry or any other draft movement were actually taking steps to put Uncommitted delegate/alternate candidates on the ballot, we would argue on their behalf as well.

A while back, there was some debate about people from out-of-state casting votes in the BJ straw poll, because they will not be able to vote in NJ's primary election.  Based on that logic, Blue Jersey voters should have the opportunity to cast votes for Al Gore in the straw poll since they will have the opportunity to cast votes for delegates/alternates that are committed to him in February.

It has also been argued that the BJ straw poll is just for fun.  If that is true, what would be the harm of including Al Gore in the next straw poll?  If something is just for fun, why should it have more stringent standards than the Division of Elections?

More important than voting in a straw poll, if there are any supporters of Al Gore reading this, please go to the Draft Gore NJ website and join our effort.

And if Juan et al continue to refuse to include Al Gore in the straw poll, please vote for Other, write Al Gore in the space provided (if one is provided), and encourage others to do the same.  It would be great if Other could beat John Edwards in the next poll.

isn't it about time for our monthly poll?

how about a poll before the poll (0.00 / 0)
Why not invite Blue Jerseyans to vote on whether or not the Draft Gore NJ effort to put delegate/alternate candidates on the February 5, 2008 Presidential primary election ballot warrants the inclusion of Al Gore into the Blue Jersey straw poll?

We would be happy to add that question to this post if the result would carry any weight with Blue Jersey management.

How about... (0.00 / 0)
NO!

You said it yourself:

Al Gore is clearly more interested in saving the world than running for President.

Why on earth would any sane, thoughtful person want to put someone on the ballot that they know isn't interested in the position?  That is just crazy.

Is this just an effort to "punish" someone for not being progressive enough?  We already did that to Al Gore when dunderheads were running around spouting nonsense about how Nader was the ONLY candidate that had a legitimate shot outside of the two-party system.

Thanks for George W. Bush, Nader-ites!  Let's try to fuck us again!

Draft Hudson Observer (4.00 / 1)
He's clearly more interested in saving Hudson County than running for President, but that shouldn't stop us. The man's clearly running for President.

Anyone want to be on a delegate slate with me? Hudson Observer could easily win in a floor fight.

it is an exercise in democracy (0.00 / 0)
Whether Al Gore enters the race this fall is up to him and that determination will be made based on whether or not he believes that he can do more for our country and world as President of the United States than he can as the highly respected private citizen that he currently is.

If Gore decides that he does not want to run, it is most likely not a result of a lack of desire to be President, but more of an unwillingness to sacrifice everything that he is working towards at the moment to participate in a dog-and-pony show that puts a greater emphasis on money and process than an honest analysis of issues and where candidates stand on them.

The difference between what Draft Gore NJ is doing and what most draft movements normally do is gear our organization towards the voters, many of whom for a litany of reasons would like the opportunity to vote for Al Gore instead of the candidates who are currently in the field, rather than the candidate, whose decision is usually made independent of the energy and enthusiasm being developed on the ground in their name.

And we believe that if we are successful in electing a small delegation of Gore supporters to the Democratic National Convention, that delegation could be in a position to have a major impact on the nominating process if no one candidate has earned the support of enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination on the first ballot.

But this is not the question being raised here.  The question being asked is whether or not someone who will be represented by delegate/alternate candidates on NJ's February 5, 2008 primary ballot should be included in Blue Jersey's Presidential straw poll.

If your answer is no, so be it, but there is no reason to question the sanity or thoughtfulness of a group of people who are as committed to the democratic process as we are.  It isn't like we were the ones who supported Nader in 2000.

This don't look like an exercise club (0.00 / 0)
If you want to act stupid, that's your Constitutional right - but don't expect the rest of us not to point and say, "Look at that guy acting stupid!".  Beyond that, you really shouldn't expect us to say, "Let's act stupid, too!"

The reason to question the sanity or thoughtfulness of a group continually engaging in stupidity is that they are continually engaging in stupidity.  I would say that that is the ONLY reason to question a groups sanity or thoughtfulness.  The fact this has to be explained only adds to the stupidity of the whole measure.

Gore (1.00 / 1)
I support Gore for President, and I'm as sane as they come.  I'm also quite thoughtful.  And you're a dick. See?

[ Parent ]
I see (0.00 / 0)
that you are apparently not as "thoughtful" as you have deluded yourself into thinking you are.  "Thoughtful" implies "thinking" which would imply "reasoning".  Any way you slice that, it would be a total waste of time and energy to chase a candidate who is running away as fast as he can.

If it makes me a dick to point out the truth, then I'll be a dick until I drop dead.  At least when I die, no one will be able to say, "He was a nice guy, but kind of dumb."

[ Parent ]
Actually... (0.00 / 1)
You're a dick because of weird leaps in logic like this:

Is this just an effort to "punish" someone for not being progressive enough?  We already did that to Al Gore when dunderheads were running around spouting nonsense about how Nader was the ONLY candidate that had a legitimate shot outside of the two-party system.

Thanks for George W. Bush, Nader-ites!  Let's try to fuck us again!

It's the truth.  Just because you refuse to deal with reality, don't expect me to overlook it.

[ Parent ]
I wouldn't rule Gore out (0.00 / 0)
I wouldn't be surprised if Gore decided to jump in later this year.  In fact, I'd be surprised if he didn't.

Should he be placed on the BlueJersey poll?  I'll leave that up to Juan.  Does it really matter either way?

I will say that despite what Hudson Observer would have us believe, his candidacy is not far-fetched.  In fact, WHDH-TV and Suffolk University released a New Hampshire primary poll two months that included Gore.  It actually showed Gore winning.

So I don't think anyone is a moron for simply suggesting we include Gore in our poll and I think that Hudson Observer's insults are more telling of his character than of the idea.

p.s. (0.00 / 0)
I've recommended this diary because I think this is an interesting discussion.  However, I don't feel strongly one way or another on Gore's inclusion in our poll.
